It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Rami Malek in a lead role. Since he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 2018, his biggest roles have been as a Bond villain in “No Time to Die” Denzel Washington’s LAPD partner in crime thriller “The Little Things,” and a supporting role in “Oppenheimer’s” large ensemble. None of these movies were really what you’d call Rami Malek movies. “The Amateur,” which 20th Century released a trailer for on Wednesday, is a Rami Malek movie. The espionage thriller looks to take advantage of Malek’s unique characteristics in a way nothing else quite has since “Mr. Robot.”
Malek stars as an antihero on a revenge mission who uses CIA resources for his own purposes. Here’s the official logline from 20th Century: “Charlie Heller (Malek) is a brilliant, but deeply introverted decoder for...

"I want to face my wife's killers, look them in the eyes, and balance the scales." Dark. 20th Century Studios has unveiled an official trailer for The Amateur, a thrilling new revenge movie from British director James Hawes (who also directed a bunch of episodes of that spy series "Slow Horses" if you want to get a sense of his cinematic style). The film follows a nerdy CIA cryptographer / software geek who manages to blackmail his own agency into training him to let him go after a group of terrorist who killed his wife in London. He realizes his bosses will not act due to conflicting internal priorities, so he takes things into his own hands. Rami Malek stars as Charles Heller, along with Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani, and Laurence Fishburne. This reminds me of Jason Bourne at first glance,...

In an age where everyone wants their own John Wick, The Amateur’s Rami Malek and James Hawes were eager to take another route.
Inspired by Robert Littell’s 1981 homonymous spy novel and Charles Jarrott’s own big-screen adaptation that same year, Malek and his director, Hawes, relied on The Amateur’s foundational premise as a jumping-off point for their modernized take. Upon losing his wife (Rachel Brosnahan) in a terrorist attack, CIA cryptographer Charlie Heller ( Malek) strongarms his ambivalent bosses into green-lighting his own personal revenge mission. Thus, in the newly released trailer (below), the viewer is conditioned to expect the trope where Heller transforms himself into a one-man killing machine. But he’s quickly in for a rude awakening by way of Laurence Fishburne’s CIA instructor character.
Heller instead returns to his existing core competencies involving computers and technology, and thanks to Malek’s Emmy-winning role as...

Rami Malek says something unintentionally hilarious at the top of The Amateur trailer: "It's the CIA. I've got to trust that they'll make the right call." As HBO's Lanterns series continues to round out its supporting cast, the latest addition is an actor who has played numerous memorable roles over the years, Garret Dillahunt.
According to Deadline, Dillahunt will play a villain, but his character doesn't appear to be anyone we might know from the comics.
Described as a "modern cowboy," William Macon is a "a self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man who masks his ruthless ambition behind a charming and calculated facade."
Dillahunt has a lot of experience playing villains, with appearances in the likes of The Last House on the Left, Looper, and HBO's Deadwood, in which he played two completely different characters (really three if you count his cameo in the movie).
Dillahunt joins the recently cast Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) as Hal Jordan.

The new Culture, Media and Sport Committee (Cmsc) is to continue the work of the previous one in attempting to revamp British film and high-end TV via what it has described as a “sequel” to the previous inquiry.
The previous inquiry was responsible for pushing for the new 40% indie film tax relief along with tax relief for VFX, the latter of which the Labour government rubberstamped in yesterday’s budget and brought forward by three months.

Confirming a recent casting rumor, the trades are reporting that Kelly Macdonald has now officially signed on for a supporting role in HBO's Lanterns series.
We had heard that the Scottish actress - who has appeared in the likes of Trainspotting, No Country for Old Men and Boardwalk Empire - was up for the role of Hal Jordan's love-interest, which led to speculation that she might be playing Star Sapphire.
While her character is expected to become romantically involved with Jordan, she doesn't appear to be playing an established DC Comics hero or villain.
According to THR, Macdonald will play Sheriff Kerry, "a no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town. Her resilience, shaped by a complex past that’s hardened her resolve, anchors her when the community’s secrets begin to surface."

We recently got word that Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) had landed the role of John Stewart in the upcoming Dcu Lanterns series, with Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) officially confirmed to star as Hal Jordan around the same time.
Now, 21x4 has shared some impressive fan-art which may give us an idea of how Pierre and Chandler will look as the rookie ring-slinging hero and the Green Lantern Corps veteran who will become his reluctant mentor.
Pierre was always a fan-favorite pick to play Stewart, but we had heard that fellow frontrunner Stephan James (Babes) was the studio's top choice. We do know that Josh Brolin (and several other A-list actors if reports are to be believed) was offered the role of Jordan, and fans don't seem to have warmed to the idea of Chandler suiting-up as the character just yet.

If you're a film fan with a Netflix subscription, you've almost certainly watched Jeremy Saulnier's white-knuckle thriller Rebel Ridge at some point in the last month. And if you've watched Rebel Ridge, then you'll have seen its star, Aaron Pierre, put in one of the performances of the year as hyper-skilled, hyper-competent former marine Terry Richmond. It's a turn that clearly caught the eye of the folks in charge of HBO's upcoming DC Green Lantern show Lanterns, as Pierre has just landed the co-lead as the series' young buck Lantern John Stewart.

Aaron Pierre, the star of Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, has nabbed the plum part of Green Lantern John Stewart in DC Studios’ and HBO’s much-ballyhooed series Lanterns.
The casting caps one of the more scrutinized actor searches in some time. Not only is the show the first major TV endeavor from DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, but the role of Stewart carries much significance, as the fan-favorite comic book character was one of DC’s first Black superheroes.
The intense casting process came down to Pierre and Stephan James, who is on the festival circuit with drama The Piano Lesson and who starred in the 2016 Jesse Owens biopic Race. Both participated in screen tests, with the actors squaring off against the already cast Kyle Chandler on Thursday and Friday. Each actor had their boosters, but the final decision was made Tuesday.

Lanterns: A Frontrunner To Play John Stewart Has Reportedly Emerged; No Official Offer Has Been Made
Last we heard, Rebel Ridge star Aaron Pierre and The Piano Lesson actor Stephan James were the top contenders to land the role of John Stewart in the Dcu Lanterns series, and a frontrunner has reportedly emerged.
According to Jeff Sneider in his latest newsletter, James now looks likely to land the part of the younger ring-slinging hero opposite Kyle Chandler as veteran Green Lantern, Hal Jordan.
Though an offer hasn't been officially made, Sneider believes that DC Studios co-head James Gunn and Lanterns showrunners/EPs Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King are all "leaning towards James." If accurate, we can expect the trades to make an announcement fairly soon.
We recently learned that James Hawes will helm the first two episodes.

Caroline Dinenage Returns Unopposed To Culture, Media & Sport Committee Hotseat
The UK’s Culture Media & Sport Committee (Cmsc), which scrutinizes the work of the film and TV industries, has re-elected Caroline Dinenage as chair. Dinenage, whose father Fred Dinenage was a TV presenter, was the sole nomination and therefore elected unopposed. She had been chair for around a year before parliament was dissolved for the July 4 election. During her tenure she oversaw the review into the high-end TV and film industries, which saw the likes of Gurinder Chadha, Slow Horses director James Hawes and the head of Amazon UK appear in front of the committee. That work will need to be started from scratch if Dinenage chooses to do so. “I’m delighted to be re-elected to chair the Culture, Media and Sport Committee and entrusted to build on our achievements in the last parliament,” said Dinenage. “These sectors are our global economic super-power,...

“Throwing money” at the “workforce crisis” in UK film and TV will “exacerbate the problem” rather than solving it, according to the former boss of Amazon in Europe.
Georgia Brown, who now chairs the UK’s Screen Sectors Skills Task Force, delivered a passionate plea for the industry to take a holistic approach to resolving the “crisis” during an appearance in front of the UK’s British Film & High-End TV Inquiry this morning, which was titled “How can the UK film industry combat its workforce crisis?”
According to Brown, the industry is now comfortably meeting a BFI-set demand to spend 1% of production budgets, or £100M ($127M), on training, but that this spending is far too fragmented.
“We know we are collectively spending more than 1% but I will keep coming back to the fact that it’s not a money question,” she added. “Throwing more money won’t solve this, it will exacerbate the problem.

Amazon UK MD Chris Bird was among the latest group of industry execs to appear in front of the UK’s British Film & High-End TV Inquiry this afternoon, during which he revealed how much cash the streamer has invested in content from UK broadcasters for the first time.
“We have spent more than $400 million licensing, co-producing, and co-commissioning content from the UK Public Service Broadcasters,” Bird said. “Not only to make bigger and better shows but we’ve also helped produce everything from Steve McQueen’s Small Axe and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag to the recently announced second and third seasons of The Night Manager with the BBC.”
Deadline was first to break news of The Night Manager returning with Tom Hiddleston signed on to star.
Prime Video doesn’t only help produce these hits but also distributes them to territories across the globe, Bird added. “Outside of America, British...

This is a stacked weekend for movies that could get awards attention but probably won’t, both in theaters and on digital platforms. First up is a lively ode to one of cinema’s musical masters.
The contender to watch this week: “Ennio”
Giuseppe Tornatore‘s documentary about influential composer Ennio Morricone has been a long time coming, and not only because Morricone’s career dates back to 1946. “Ennio” premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2021 and was released in Italy in 2022. But don’t take its delayed domestic debut as a bad omen: The movie is a spellbinding tribute to the two-time Oscar winner, who wrote the scores for “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “Days of Heaven,” “The Untouchables,” “The Hateful Eight,” and Tornatore’s own “Cinema Paradiso.” The talking heads include Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, Quincy Jones, and Bruce Springsteen. Following a theatrical run in February,...

Disney entertained the CinemaCon crowd in Las Vegas on Thursday with 75 minutes of footage including big crowd-pleasers Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, and Alien: Romulus, and an appearance by Dwayne Johnson to promote Moana 2.
Fresh from a victorious boardroom battle for CEO Bob Iger and on the back of a year when Disney ceded its box office throne to Universal, the pressure was on the studio to bring the goods at its presentation – and it delivered with a rousing roster of peeks at 2024 tentpoles and one from the 2025 pipeline.
