She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, from which she also received a master's degree in education. Her father was the president and chief executive of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, the pharmaceutical manufacturer, in New York. Her mother, Monika A. Heimbold,was a social worker at the Guidance Center in New Rochelle, New York.
