It’s a star-studded Marbella of the 1980s, and the glam Andalusian backdrop frames an opulent narrative that fuses suspense, betrayal and slow-simmering vengeance in the Atresmedia original series “Eva & Nicole,” teased by its producers – Spain’s Atresmedia TV (“Veneno”) alongside Good Mood (“Cristo y Rey”) – at the MipDrama showcase on April 7, a precursor to the broader MipTV international series market in Cannes, running April 8-10.
Handling global distribution, Atresmedia TV International Sales will attend MipTV.
One of only 10 international series selected by the MipDrama jury, the eight-episode affair is directed by David Molina, Antonio Hernández and Álvaro Vicario and structured around a fast-paced script written by Daniel Écija, Patricia Trueba, Andrés Martín Soto, Iñaki San Román, Paula López Cuervo and César Mendizábal.
The series opens with gusto at Nicole’s, the social club named after its owner who is framed from the back as she fiercely pulls open...

Philadelphia-based Breaking Glass Pictures has acquired North American rights to Angeles Hernández and David Matamoros’ feature debut “Isaac,” a genre-blend of drama, black comedy and an existential journey.
Breaking Glass plans a third quarter 2021 release for the movie. The deal was struck by Richard Wolff, president of Breaking Glass Pictures, and “Isaac’s” world sales agent Brett Walker, along with Miguel Govea, at U.K.-based Alief.
“Isaac” is produced by Hernández and Matamoros’ Barcelona-based Mr Miyagi, co-producer of Netflix hit “The Platform.”
Based on the Spanish stage play by Antonio Hernández, “Isaac” follows two old friends, Denis and Nacho, who meet again – both with their respective partners – years after having an intense relationship as teenagers.
“We very much enjoyed ‘Isaac,’” said Wolff, adding: “This beautifully produced and acted film is about strength, love, and finding oneself.”
A surrogate drama too, “Isaac” deals with the challenges of family and desire...

Signaling one of the biggest deals ever struck by a U.S. company on a single Spanish drama series, AMC Studios and Spanish pay TV/SVOD operator Movistar Plus are partnering on the production and distribution of a sunken treasure adventure series from Academy Award winner Alejandro Amenábar.
Inspired by the Spanish graphic novel “The Treasure of the Black Swan,” the as-yet-untitled series will premiere in 2021 on AMC in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Latin America and the Caribbean as well as on Movistar Plus in Spain.
The six-part thriller is produced in collaboration with independent production house Mod Producciones, whose head, Fernando Bovaira, has produced all of Amenábar’s movies from his second feature, 1997’s “Open Your Eyes.”
Featuring an international cast, set on both sides of the Atlantic, and in the near-present day but with flashbacks to 1804, the series also weighs in as one of the most...

Most recent film appearances, plus concert and television work Please check out our previous post: "Montiel La Violetera and Pedro Almodóvar Icon." Her last star vehicle of note was Juan Antonio Bardem's Varietés (1971), a melodrama about an aging actress who continues to dream of becoming a bona fide star. [Please scroll down to listen to Montiel's husky rendition of "Amado mío."] The forty-something hopeful eventually gets her chance at stardom, but it all turns out to be a flash in the pan. By then, following a whole array of formulaic romantic musical melodramas, Montiel's box-office allure had waned rather radically. She turned down roles in Spain's cine del destape -- post-Franco softcore comedies -- which eventually meant the demise of her movie career. Her last official star vehicle was Pedro Lazaga's comedy Cinco almohadas para una noche ("Five Cushions for One Night," 1974) -- though she would be seen in Eduardo Manzanos Brochero's That's Entertainment-like compilation feature Canciones de nuestra...

Finally, after years in development hell and various failed production announcements from the company Filmax, who even released promotional teaser trailers and one sheets at last year's Cannes Film Festival, the long awaited adaptation of Spanish comic book “El Capitán Trueno” is currently confirmed to be under pre-production under the title “Capitán Trueno y El Santo Grial”. The film will be directed in 3D by Antonio Hernández (“Los Borgia”) and will star Sergio Peris-Mencheta (“El Arte de Morir”) who just started his career over at the United States with the soon to be released films “Love Ranch” by Taylor Hackford and “Resident Evil: Afterlife”. The cast will be completed by Elsa Pataky (“Giallo”) and Spain's Adán Aliaga, who got his start in film with another comic book adaptation called “Estigmas”. Ironically the film will be no longer produced by Filmax but by Maltés Producciones and Sorolla Films with the collaboration...
