Anna Kendrick and I are discussing soundbite culture.
She’s winding down after a day of interviews for her directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour,” where she’s been navigating the tricky business of getting audiences hyped for the chilling true story about the time a serial killer was a bachelor on “The Dating Game.”
The movie, now streaming on Netflix, is a subversive take on the true crime genre. The story is not focused on the killer’s motives or his capture, but more of a meditation on all the secret ways women navigate the world to ensure their survival, which makes the movie tough to boil down into a few quippy quotes.
As we walk to Kendrick’s hotel suite, I crack a joke about someone asking her to sing while talking about serial killers and she covers her mouth to suppress a knowing laugh. Because, when doing press,...

Donovan’s Echo Trailer. Jim Cliffe‘s Donovan’s Echo (2011) movie stars Danny Glover, Bruce Greenwood, Chelah Horsdal, Sonja Bennett, and Natasha Calis. Donovan’s Echo‘s plot synopsis: “Once a brilliant mathematician, Donovan Matheson (Danny Glover) has been an outcast since an accident that killed his wife and daughter three decades ago for which he blames himself. He finally returns home as the tragic event’s 30th anniversary approaches and begins discovering similarities to what had happened to him in the past. Convinced history is repeating itself, Donovan risks everything to save an unsuspecting family from the same tragic fate.”
Great premise but the execution may be a little dubious. It’s strength is the storyline and that it may remind the viewer of Rubicon and Proof because Danny Glover’s character is a mathematician and there is a visible mystery.
Donovan’s Echo also stars David Lewis, Hiro Kanagawa,...

"The Abducted"
Unlikely as it is that any of the show's creators or writers have ever read my regular laments on the subject, it is nonetheless with pleasure that I can report that this week's episode of Fringe actually gave Lance Reddick something to do besides look good in a suit and send agents on missions in a bladder-rupturing deep bass voice. If the Fringe writers hadn't brought Andre Royo's cab-driver back this week (hurray!) only to throw his role away (boo!), I'd almost begin to think that Abrams and Co. actually liked The Wire instead of just wanting to lo-jack the kudos of its stars by including them in Fringe.
Our Olivia is stuck and desperate to make a bid for escape via Walternate's isolation chamber on Liberty Island. But first there's a case to solve: serial kid-kidnapper 'The Candyman' is on the loose in the red-titled Other Place,...

Toronto -- Tina Keeper ("North of 60"), Don Burnstick, Jennifer Baxter and Blues musician Derek Miller have joined the second season cast of the Canadian TV soap "Cashing In" from Animiki See Digital Productions and Buffalo Gal Pictures.
They join a returning cast for the Aptn half-hour dramedy about a fictional First Nations-run gambling palace in Manitoba that includes Eric Schweig, Wesley French, Karen Holness, Glen Gould and Sarah Podemski.
The comic series has found cult status by portraying aboriginal Canadians as sexy and wealthy in a modern casino setting, rather than telling traditional stories in Canada's Great White North.
Vanessa Loewen and Jean du Toit are producing "Cashing In," with Peter Strutt and Phyllis Laing executive producing.

As previous Fringe spoilers have revealed, multiple Observers are on the way.
In a recent interview with E! News, series star Lance Reddick previewed this, and one other, storyline on the way. He said:
"We've got a real page-turner of an episode coming up that's all about the Observers. And there's a whole episode about Broyles revisiting a case, a killer, that's the one that got away for Broyles. That episode introduces my ex-wife (Karen Holness) and talks about why we got divorced, and what my relationship with Fringe Division was in the past, versus what it is now."
This week's episode of Fringe is a major one: it will showcase Olivia's return trip to the alternate reality she visited in May.
