- He was the first person to be shown an unfinished preview of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), outside of those who have worked on the film. His film 5-25-77 (2008) is an autobiographical telling of how that happened.
- Very early in development John Hughes had asked him to direct Home Alone (1990) but he was committed to another movie so Hughes offered it to Chris Columbus who had been hired originally to direct another Hughes scripted comedy National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) but resigned from the film due to not getting along with its star Chevy Chase. Columbus accepted the directorial position.
