The Supacell star on channelling his South London roots into a rising career.
“Wolverine is definitely hard to kill,” says Tosin Cole.
He’s been mulling over this. Cole is speaking to Empire during a morning off from filming mystery comedy thriller Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie (written by The Last Of Us’ Craig Mazin), in which he stars alongside Hugh Jackman. For the past few weeks, alongside shooting that, Cole has been promoting his Netflix super-powered drama Supacell while Jackman has been promoting Deadpool & Wolverine. So: the super-fight is on.
Cole doesn’t fancy his chances. “Michael ain’t got no offensive skills,” he says of Supacell’s time-manipulating lead. “Wolverine’s all offensive. Michael’s a very logical person, he’d be like, ‘He’s got three knives in each hand, he can heal himself, he’s very aggressive.’ So I think I’d just run away.

Charles Grice “Lefty” Driesell, a Hall of Fame coach who made Maryland into a national power, died today at 92. He died at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia, his family said, but did not disclose the cause.
Maryland planned to honor Driesell with a moment of silence before its game against No. 14 Illinois later today. The university said the team would wear throwback uniforms from the 1970s, last worn on Jan. 21, when the Terrapins honored Driesell with an “Ode to Lefty.”
Driesell finished with 786 victories over parts of five decades and was the first coach to win more than 100 games at four NCAA Division I schools. He started at Davidson, and then brought Maryland into national prominence from 1969-86, a stay that ended with the death of All-American Len Bias from a cocaine dose.

A basketball legend is admiring The Bear’s hustle.
Former Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, aka Coach K, became an unlikely plot point in Season 2 of Hulu’s culinary dramedy, with chef Sydney (played by Ayo Edebiri) finding inspiration in Coach K’s book Leading With the Heart: Successful Strategies for Basketball, Business and Life — even though she didn’t know who Coach K was. Well, Coach K didn’t know much about The Bear, either… but now he does.

Mike Krzyzewski, better known as Duke’s iconic Coach K, had no idea his 2000 book, “Leading With the Heart,” would play a key role in FX’s hit restaurant dramedy “The Bear.” In fact, he had never heard of the show.
“I got texts from people saying, ‘Your book is on “The Bear.”’ I said, ‘What the hell [is] “The Bear”?’” Coach K said on a new episode of Duke’s “The Brotherhood Podcast.”
Early on in Season 2 of the series, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) is gifted a copy of Coach K’s inspirational book by her dad. Sydney becomes obsessed with the book, subtitled “Successful Strategies for Basketball, Business and Life,” and applies its lessons to developing The Bear restaurant and motivating the kitchen staff. “Leading With the Heart” becomes a major touchstone for the head chef throughout the season.

The sky was gray with rain clouds as a crowd of mourners made their way into Atlanta’s State Farm Arena to celebrate the life of the rapper Takeoff, the cornerstone of the Migos who was shot dead on November 1. The showers, the mayor of Atlanta, Andre Dickens, would tell us later, were a good omen for a funeral, meaning Takeoff, born Kirsnik Khari Ball, had been heaven bound.

New York Times reporter Joe Coscarelli‘s new book, Rap Capital: An Atlanta Story, is a thorough account of the rise of Atlanta hip-hop as a business and a culture. Through vignettes with the city’s eclectic cast of characters — rappers and businesspeople alike — Coscarelli paints a vivid portrait of the city’s unique wealth of talent. The book’s concern with 2013 until 2020 lands right as the forces of racism and capitalism, a constant source of tension within hip-hop, confronted the dawn of the streaming era. It’s easy to forget that in 2008, basketball fans wondered if LeBron James — years away from the first of his four NBA titles — was clutch enough to win the big one. Kobe Bryant was considered a selfish player who’d influenced the departure of star center Shaquille O’Neal from the Lakers. And the USA Basketball team, made up of top pros, languished as an also-ran that hadn’t made the 2006 world finals. As the stirring doc, The Redeem Team, shows, that changed when Bryant joined fellow stars training for a chance to win in the 2008 Beijing Games. His reason? As player Carmelo Anthony hilariously recalls, “He said, ‘I’m tired of watching y’all lose.’” Their historic rise as a true team under the magic touch of Duke University’s Coach K, Mike Krzyzewski, thrills because, “They all had things they needed to prove,” says director Jon Weinbach. And along with Beijing gold for Bryant,...

The New York Yankees are hosting the Boston Red Sox for a four-game series, but this edition of the teams’ fierce rivalry has different stakes than usual.

Last night’s NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship nail-biter that saw Kansas defeat North Carolina 72-69 was the most-viewed NCAA Men’s Championship Game ever on cable television. The Kansas-unc game delivered an average of 18.1 million viewers, based on total audience delivery. That’s up 4 over last year’s National Championship match up between Baylor and Gonzaga.
It didn’t hurt that the No. 1-seeded Jayhawks staged the biggest halftime comeback in championship game history, from down 15 to a 3 point margin of victory.
CBS Sports and Turner Sports’ telecast across TBS, TNT and truTV makes Kansas-North Carolina the third most-watched college basketball game in cable TV history. After an exhibition loss to Nigeria over the weekend shocked the basketball world, the U.S. Men’s Olympic team lost another exhibition game on Monday, this time to Australia.
Now, these are just exhibition games ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. They don’t officially count for anything. But winning has come to seem like the U.S. Team’s birthright. It is the most successful team in international competition ever, winning medals in all 18 Olympic tournaments it has entered, including 15 golds. Given that record, dropping exhibition games to Australia and Nigeria is surprising.
It’s even more surprising when one considers that the U.S. is led by Kevin Durant, roundly considered to be either the best or the second-best player on the planet, while Australia is fronted by Patty Mills, an Austrlian-born pro who rides the bench for the San Antonio Spurs.

Confirming a plan it started exploring last fall, the NCAA said it will host the entire men’s basketball tournament — the event known as March Madness — in Indiana due to Covid-19.
The extraordinary initiative is aimed at ensuring that this year’s 67-game extravaganza does not meet the same fate as the 2020 edition. The cancellation of the tournament last year was one of the most jarring spectacles of the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.
The news delivers a boost to WarnerMedia’s Turner networks as well as ViacomCBS. The two companies have shared broadcast rights to the tournament for many years. The tournament plan also helps Fox and ESPN, which are major college basketball rights holders.
Selection Sunday, the day when tournament participants are announced, remains scheduled for March 14, with the Final Four slated for April 3 and 5. Exact dates for the other rounds of the tournament are yet to be determined.

Monica Aldama is a legend in the sport of competitive cheerleading, but you probably never heard her name before the Netflix docuseries “Cheer” debuted earlier this year. If there is a Pat Summit, Mike Krzyzewski or Phil Jackson in the sport it’s Aldama. Since she took over as coach of Navarro College’s cheer program the school has won 14 national championships since 2000 alone. She’s built a dynasty and, as the series chronicled, a family.

Sonic the Hedgehog runs so very fast, but he cannot escape the feeling we've seen this all before and it wasn't that great then.

When watching Sonic the Hedgehog, it is easy to feel like you’ve time warped back to a different era—but not the 1990s. At least not fully. While the film thrives on a wave of nostalgia that any ‘90s kid with shadows of Sega Genesis glory in their memory banks can recognize, in truth the movie more closely resembles a family film from the 2000s. For here is a perfectly adequate effort that refuses to rock the boat or even leave the bay. It instead sits firmly on the dock, relying on banal pop culture gags, a tacky premise about beloved pop culture icons entering suburbia via interdimensional portals, and maybe the stray fart joke. They even have a major comedian from...

It was 1992 and they would be the first team of NBA stars to represent the United States in the Olympics. They would secure an 8-0 record on their way to the coveted gold medal, demolishing their opponents by an average of nearly 44 points. They were the original Dream Team. And now, in honor of their 20th anniversary, the NBA TV documentary The Dream Team gathers the players that coach Chuck Daly, who passed away in 2009, led to victory (including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Charles Barkley). "It was a moment, really, for the game of basketball," says then-assistant coach Mike Krzyzewski (head coach at Duke University and now also the head coach of the U.S. team going for gold at the London Olympics this summer). "You could feel just the aura, the power of the personalities and the talent. It made you feel that, wow, this may never happen again.
