Deep-voiced, balding Australian-born supporting actor in British films of the 1950's and 60's, on stage from 1934. He came from a musical family (his father was secretary of the Musicians Union of Australia) and worked as a radio announcer, as well as singing, early on in his career. On screen, he was invariably cast as authoritarian figures: senior public servants, trench-coated police officers and the like.
