Former MCU star Jonathan Majors has set his first acting gig since being convicted of assault and harassment earlier this year. The Loki and Creed III actor will play the lead in a new supernatural revenge thriller from Martin Villeneuve, the younger brother of Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.

Based on an original screenplay by Frank Hannah, Merciless "follows a top CIA interrogator who, after the woman he loves is overtaken by a malevolent force, is forced to go even darker to defeat it. The movie is scheduled to shoot in Saskatchewan in late fall.

“Merciless intertwines themes of possession, revenge and personal justice within a haunting narrative. It explores the psychological descent of John, played by Majors, and the supernatural forces challenging his sanity,” Villeneuve says.

The project was developed by producer Christopher Tuffin, who says he “refuses to let the court of public opinion and selective prosecution undermine great art and artists.

Jonathan Majors is one of the best stars of this generation, and critics have immensely praised him for his stellar performances in his films. The actor was set to become the villain in Phase 5 and Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after making his debut in Loki Season 1 as He Who Remains. He also gave a brief cameo as Kang The Conqueror in Ant-Man 3.

However, as he made his official debut as the villain in Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, fans were not blown away by his performance as everyone had hoped, because of a ton of reasons. Later, his life was turned upside down as he was convicted of assault and harassment on his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.

Jonathan Majors has landed his first film role since he was convicted in 2023 of domestic assault and fired from Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. He will star in the independent revenge thriller “Merciless,” to be directed by Martin Villeneuve.

Martin Villeneuve, the younger brother of “Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, confirmed the news of Majors’ casting to Variety. Written by Frank Hannah, the film follows a CIA investigator who goes to troubling lengths after the woman he loves is overpowered by sinister forces. It’s expected to be filmed in Saskatchewan in late fall.

Majors was sentenced in April to one year of domestic violence counseling after he was found guilty of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend. Per the Manhattan judge who presided over the two-week trial, Majors must complete a 52-week in-person program in Los Angeles. So, it’s unclear how it will overlap with the shooting schedule for “Merciless.

When the revered folksinger and author Woody Guthrie passed away on October 3, 1967 – following a long, tragic battle with Huntington’s disease – his friends and colleagues were moved to celebrate his life and legacy with a tribute concert. The manager of Guthrie’s business affairs, Harold Leventhal, commissioned the blacklisted novelist and screenwriter Millard Lampell to re-work an old script he had earlier fashioned from Guthrie’s bountiful catalog of songs and prose. Lampell was well suited to the task, not merely an outsider looking in. In 1941 Lampell would co-found the Almanac Singers, the agit-prop folk music ensemble that featured Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lee Hays and several others.
