While Kim Da-Eun — Alicia Hannah-Kim’s character in “Cobra Kai”— was one of the main antagonists last season (and seemed to be done for good), you shouldn’t have counted her out. A little over a year ago, Showtime announced that they were ordering a series – then known as Dexter: Origins, now known as Dexter: Original Sin – that would serve as a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap things up for good… for the title character, anyway. Now they’re assembling the cast for Dexter: Original Sin, and The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Christina Milian (Falling Inn Love), James Martinez (Love Victor), Alex Shimizu (The Blacklist), and Reno Wilson (Mike & Molly) have all been cast as characters with names that will be familiar to Dexter fans.

Milian, Martinez, and Shimizu are all playing younger versions of characters that viewers have met before. As The Hollywood Reporter explains, “Milian will portray Maria Laguerta, the role previously portrayed by Lauren Velez.

Dexter: Original Sin is rounding out the ranks of Miami Metro.

James Martinez (Love Victor), Christina Milian (Falling Inn Love) and Alex Shimizu (The Blacklist) have been tapped to play younger versions of some of the key cops previously featured in the original Dexter, while Reno Wilson (Mike & Molly) will play a previously name-checked character that was never seen onscreen in the flagship series.

Originally ordered to series in February 2023 and titled Dexter: Origins, Original Sin is set in 1991 Miami and revolves around Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he goes from student to avenging serial killer. With guidance from his father, Harry (Christian Slater), Dexter adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people without being discovered by law enforcement at the same time as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Martinez will take over the role of Angel Batista, played in the original series by David Zayas.

Dexter: Original Sin has cast four new series regulars to join previously announced Patrick Gibson, who is taking over the titular serial killer role (in his younger years) made famous by Michael C. Hall in Showtime’s Dexter.

As production kicks off today in Miami with Clyde Phillips at the helm, James Martinez, Christina Milian (Falling Inn Love) and Alex Shimizu (The Blacklist) have joined the series portraying younger versions of Og characters.

Martinez plays Angel Batista (originally portrayed by David Zayas), an up-and-coming homicide detective who leads with his heart; Milian plays Maria Laguerta (Luna Lauren Velez), Miami Metro’s first female homicide detective; and Shimizu plays Vince Masuka (C.S. The new drama comes from the executive producers of NYPD Blue and focuses on the 74th Precinct in East New York. Last Friday, Netflix released a fun vampire slayer action flick called Day Shift (you can read our 7/10 review Here)… and if you watched the movie, you may have noticed that it had a goofy end credits song called “Mowing Down Vamps”, which built a tune around a line spoken by the character played by Dave Franco (The Disaster Artist). The song around Franco’s line was performed by The Bsb Boys (J Young Mdk and Sam Pounds) alongside the film’s star Jamie Foxx (Spider-Man: No Way Home) – and now Foxx has released a video for the song.

Vincent Ngo, top screenwriter and Hollywood script doctor, has set up comedy series “Early Risers” in his native Vietnam. Talent behemoth, Creative Artists Agency (CAA) represents the production company Early Risers Media Group and is handling licensing of the series’ distribution rights.

The show, about the lives of American and European expats living and working in Saigon, is set to begin filming under the direction of Zach Merck at the end of this month.

After a prolonged period of Covid restrictions, “Early Risers” is believed to be the first international television production in Vietnam in over two years. Local production is being run by Ace 1 Pictures.

Not many shows get a second chance at a finale. But then again, not many shows’ first finales are as bad as Dexter’s was.

After the original Dexter series finale back in 2013 was received, let’s say, less than warmly, Showtime decided to try it again. Following a seven year cool-off period, the network invited original showrunner Clyde Phillips back to envision a new end for Bay Harbor Butcher in the limited series Dexter: New Blood.

Now Dexter: New Blood’s new ending has come and gone and despite mixed fan reaction, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t an improvement…or at least we believe it is.
