In an upcoming video, we will be looking at the modern genre classic Vfw. I say genre because while my wife astutely pointed out that the drugged-up gang in Vfw kind of act like rage zombies and the movie has that great over the top gore and characters, its not really horror. Its gritty action like the movie that inspires it, Assault on Precinct 13. Genre encompasses multiple things like horror, exploitation, and any other type of movie that just has that feel to it. Raquel Welch, the actor who became an icon and sex symbol thanks to films like “One Million Years B.C.” and “Three Musketeers,” died Wednesday in Los Angeles after a brief illness, her manager confirmed to Variety. She was 82.
She came onto the movie scene in 1966 with the sci-fi film “Fantastic Voyage” and the prehistoric adventure “One Million Years B.C.,” the latter of which established Welch as a sex symbol. The actor went on to appear in the controversial adaptation of Gore Vidal’s “Myra Beckrinridge,” “Kansas City Bomber” and Richard Lester’s delightful romps “The Three Musketeers” (1973), for which she won a Golden Globe, and “The Four Musketeers: Milady’s Revenge” (1974). She was one of the first women to play the lead role — not the romantic interest — in a Western, 1971 revenge tale “Hannie Caulder” — an inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” (2003), according to the director.

The Batman‘s Batsuit finally arrived yesterday and, predictably, the response has been mixed. The suit contains some interesting new elements, with a very Arkham Asylum inspired bat-logo and a stitched leather cowl. The short video, released as a camera test by director Matt Reeves, doesn’t give much else away. Shot in deep crimson light, this suit appears to be more armored than previous versions and has a bit of a Batman Beyond influence. Now that the cat is out of the bag, though, we should start to see some set pictures that might show off more details.
But there’s one group of fans who aren’t happy: Batfleck stans. I think it’s inarguable that Ben Affleck’s Batman got a pretty raw deal. In his debut appearance, he had to share a film with Superman, and while we did get to see him dealing with some street-level crime,...

Spanish actor Antonio Banderas has starred in such box office champs as “The Mask of Zorro,” “Evita” and “Spy Kids,” and worked with great directors, including Jonathan Demme, Robert Rodriguez, Steven Soderbergh and Julie Taymor. But he’s best known for his eight films with writer-director Pedro Almodóvar.
Sony Pictures Classics’ “Pain and Glory,” for which Banderas won the best actor prize at Cannes, puts both of them in the fast lane for the Oscar race. In keeping with the film’s themes of creativity, reconciliation and the passage of time, Banderas talked with Variety about his early days in the industry. The actor was first mentioned in Variety on Oct. 6, 1982, when two films — “Labyrinth of Passion” and “False Eyelash” — were reviewed on the same page. Banderas spoke from his hometown of Málaga, where he has created a theater company, Teatro del Soho, which opened with a Banderas-directed “A Chorus Line.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made statements about inclusion, diversity, gender equity and creative risk-taking on Sunday night at the 11th annual Governors Awards, but it also learned a big lesson as it was making those statements.
The lesson: Sometimes, it doesn’t matter what else you do, because somebody is going to come along and steal the whole damn show.
In this case, that somebody was Lina Wertmüller, the 91-year-old Italian director who was given an Honorary Academy Award for provocative, groundbreaking films that included “The Seduction of Mimi,” “Love and Anarchy,” “Swept Away” and “Seven Beauties,” the 1977 film for which she became the first woman ever nominated for Best Director.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s surprisingly nimble way with a wisecrack and Mark Lester’s crackerjack direction were just two of the reasons this action thriller stormed the box office in 1985. Ahhnuld plays former commando “John Matrix” who gets the Ak out of mothballs for a South American showdown. No one needed steroids for this one, James Horner’s pulse-pounding score is the real performance-enhancer.

This has been a good year for fans of model and actress Laura Gemser. Recently, Severin Films released a deluxe Blu-ray package of two of her films, a soundtrack CD, a really cool t-shirt and an enamel pin, the last item appearing to be something that is new and all the rage nowadays. We’ll take a look at the two films featured in this collection.
Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals (1977)
Laura Gemser, the high cheekbone-chiseled, dark-skinned Indonesian goddess born Laurette Marcia Gemser who appeared opposite Jack Palance in Emmanuelle and the Deadly Black Cobra (1975), returns in Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals as Emanuelle. Here she’s a photojournalist who goes undercover at a mental hospital with a 35mm camera hidden within a creepy children’s doll that takes photos when the eyes open and close. She’s looking to expose the hospital’s treatment of the...

Living abroad as a youth certainly had its advantages; the Odeon theatre in Mandeville, Jamaica showed everything from Hollywood blockbusters to Shaw Brothers’ Kung Fu epics to Italian exploitation and horror. Of course I took in as much as my ten year old mind could possibly take; I’m sure a film like Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals (1977) played there, but alas, I missed it. Thanks to Severin Films, this Joe D’Amato sleaz-o-rama is finally available for my (still) ten year old sensibilities to behold.
And while my inner adolescent should be jumping up and down at what is accomplished here - it is essentially soft core adventuregrue porn – the sum does not quite equal the parts for my grumpy grown up persona. The sex and the slaughter don’t sit particularly well together, and I sure could have used a lot more of the latter. But what’s it all about,...

The heroes at the Vestron Video Collector's Series are back to prey upon your nostalgia - and wallet - with a pair of video store mainstays this month. Two directors with remarkably different, but almost equally impressive, CVs land on store shelves with the release of Mark Lester's Class of 1999 and Ken Russell's Gothic, both of which were front and center on the shelf of every Mom & Pop and corporate video rental saloon I visited throughout my childhood. Have the folks at Vestron done these titles up right? I think you probably know the answer to that question, but check below for our thoughts and details on these new releases....

Commando is an Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie always worth revisiting.
Imagine being Arnold Schwarzenegger circa 1985. You’ve won the Mr. Universe bodybuilding competition five times and Mr. Olympia seven times. Moving to the Us in 1968 with dreams of becoming a movie star, you made your first film appearance within two years (the best-forgotten Hercules In New York) and managed to land a Golden Globe for your turn in Bob Rafelson's Stay Hungry (1976).
By the mid-80s, you’d landed two massive hits at the box-office: Conan the Barbarian in 1982 and The Terminator in 1984. Okay, so you’ve had a few missteps along the way, but let’s face it: you’re still only 38, you’re built like a Greek statue, and you’re a star. The world’s at your feet.
Directed by Mark Lester, 1985’s Commando is steeped in the swagger of Schwarzenegger in his pomp.

Jackson family lawyer Londell McMillan has rejected claims from British actor Mark Lester that he could be the biological father of Michael Jackson's daughter Paris. Lester was reported to have said that he donated sperm to Jackson prior to Paris's birth and noted similarities between the girl and his own daughter Heather. A family source told People: "They twisted his words around. He's not claiming to be the father of Paris Jackson." (more)...

Michael Jackson's lawyer has rubbished claims the star's daughter was fathered by Mark Lester. Londell McMillan has dismissed the actor's suggestion Paris was conceived using sperm donated by him in 1996 and has accused Lester of "seeking five seconds of fame". He said: "These genetic lottery attempts aren't going anywhere. They have no legal standing. They may seek five seconds of fame but the claims have no merit." McMillan was also referring to similar claims made by Jackson's personal doctor Arnold Klein - who also came forward to say he donated sperm to the star and thought he may be the natural father of the pop star's two oldest children Prince Michael I, 12, and Paris, 11. No Paternity Test For Lester?
Jackson family lawyer Brian Oxman fears actor Mark Lester will struggle to convince a judge to order a paternity test to prove he fathered Michael Jackson's daughter Paris - because California law forbids it.
The Oliver! star is godfather to the King of Pop's three children Prince Michael, 12, Paris, 11, and seven-year-old Prince Michael II - and stunned the world this weekend (08-09Aug09) by announcing he could be Paris' biological dad.
Lester admits donating sperm to Jackson in 1996, while the singer was married to ex-wife Debbie Rowe, and has come forward with the shocking revelation about the youngster's parentage amid fears Jackson's mother Katherine plans to keep him away from the kids.
The Brit insists he just wants to remain a part of the children's lives - and is willing to fight for his right to access through the courts if the Jacksons continue to "exclude" him from contact.
But Oxman, a longtime representative for the Jackson clan, believes it will be difficult for Lester to secure a court-ordered paternity test, because Californian laws protect children from questioning their parentage if they are born to a married couple - and any paternity issues need to be addressed within two years of birth.
He tells British morning show GMTV, "If there were a request for a paternity test the judge would have to waive the law in the state of California, which says that a child born to a man and a woman who are married is conclusively presumed to be the child of that married couple - unless the paternity test is requested within two years of the birth of the child.
"So the result would be on the late side but it's up to a judge to make that decision. So in the Michael Jackson case I say, 'Anything is possible'. I think this is one of the most extraordinary cases I've seen."...

The girl is his? Not so fast. Despite being quoted in the ever-reliable News of the World seemingly professing to be the biological father of Michael Jackson's daughter, Paris, former child star Mark Lester isn't trying to cash in his ticket for the paternity lotto just yet. "I'm sure, as far as I know, [the children] were all his," Lester, who starred as the titular Oliver! in the Oscar-winning musical, told E! News. "I expected lots of different things to come out, but this is extraordinary." Even more extraordinary? What Lester actually did, uh, deposit as fact to the British tabloid. The 51-year-old U.K.-based Lester is godfather to Paris, Prince Michael...

Brian Oxman has denied claims by Mark Lester that he may be the father of Michael Jackson's daughter Paris.
