British noir is a slightly different animal than American film noir, which began in the early 1940s in Hollywood and lasted until roughly 1958 (if one is considering “pure” film noir and its singular traits). The British version, as well as the French and Italian editions, usually concentrates on a more “straight” narrative form with less melodrama. It is probably more true-to-life, drawing from the naturalism of Italian Neo-realism, than its counterpart across the Atlantic. It is certainly less histrionic and heightened. Pool of London is a 1951 Ealing Studios crime drama (the studio was still making other genre pictures other than comedies at this time) that takes place in and around that geographical site. The...

Would you get in a car with someone you knew had just gotten a speeding ticket for going 110 mph?
Sorry Sanjaya Malakar, but we will Never get in a car with you — it’s just too dangerous! Yesterday, March 24, the 20 year-old former American Idol contestant was pulled over by Washington State Patrol Trooper Dan MacDonald at 2:30 a.m. just outside of Seattle for going 110 m.p.h! Wow buddy — slow down!
Trooper MacDonald gave Sanjaya a $411 ticket, but no citation for reckless endangerment as no one else was on the highway at the time, says the Kirkland Reporter.
Despite what the troopers say, we think going that fast puts lives in jeopardy! Sanjaya, that’s just not Ok with us!

Dan MacDonald, the 21-year-old troubadour who performs as Spitzer Space Telescope, stumbled into his own personal folk revival in an unlikely place: a listening rack at the Barnes & Noble on the campus of Michigan State University. Not exactly Alan Lomax's American backwoods, but it inspired in MacDonald a similar impulse. The Boston University student has put his spin on the vintage folk sound on a recently-release self-titled debut LP that showcases his powerful, expansive vocal range and high-energy, storytelling singing style. Paste recently spoke with MacDonald about his archaic influences, Boston's hootenanny scene and the trouble with labels.
