On the surface, there’s very little about either Open Your Eyes or Vanilla Sky that screams Erotic Thriller. Both Alejandro Amenábar’s 1997 Spanish original and Cameron Crowe’s 2001 American remake are frequently classified as psychological thrillers, or even dramas, due to their interest in exploring the downward spiral of the main character.
And yet, upon closer examination, both films owe a heavy debt to the tropes of the Erotic Thriller.
As we’ve previously explored in this editorial series, Erotic Thrillers embody the characteristics of Film Noir, albeit with a more contemporary perspective when it comes to sex and violence. There’s often a healthy dose of voyeurism and fetishism, typically embodied in doubles of characters (usually women). And, naturally, sex and death become intertwined as the desires of characters tend to result in dangerous consequences.
Nearly all of these elements are present in Open Your Eyes and Vanilla Sky.

Oscar award-winning veteran producer Gerardo Herrero, (“The Secret In Their Eyes”) returns to the director’s chair with “Under Therapy,” his stark and unnerving big screen rendition of playwright Matías Del Federico’s theatrical production. The project bowed in competition at the Málaga Film festival earlier this week and is set for broader theatrical release in Spanish cinemas on Friday.
Latido Films handles international sales.
Enamored with the staged rendition, Herrero was inspired to add a distinctly cinematic touch to the script, honoring its darker underpinnings amidst the narratives’ anxious banter.
“The first time that I saw the production, I fell in love with the work,” Herrero told Variety. “Despite the fact that the show’s very well directed, written and performed, for me it’s much lighter than the movie. The movie’s not a comedy, it’s a drama with humor,” he revealed. “I love that they laugh and that afterwards they freeze,...

Netflix delivers a brand-new Spanish comedy about four middle-aged amigos overcoming their toxic masculinity. With an ensemble cast, ‘Machos Alfa’ (titled ‘Alpha Males’ in English) tells four different stories about machismo, sexuality, fidelity, and patriarchy. The series is clever and uses a modern setting that doesn’t overwash the plot with social media as other shows do in their attempt to be relevant. It tackles the issues with its realistic characters and plots. The characters and their issues are believable and do not fall victim to much melodrama. Directed by a woman, Laura Caballero, the series is a lighthearted show that avoids aggressively illustrating feminism. Machos Alfa is a Spanish series directed by Laura Caballero and Alberto Caballero, and stars Fernando Gil, María Hervás, Raúl Tejón, Kira Miró and Gorka Otxoa among others.
Men take center-stage in this comedy series about…. men.
Premise
A group of friends: Pedro, Luis, Raúl and Santi happen to feel a little lost in the new world of empowered women, each trying to adapt in their own haphazard way.
About the Series
In ten short episodes we follow a group of male friends – all middle aged, mid-upper class, señoritos – who have to deal with the difficult plight of being a man in the 21st Century. With humor the script includes a wide array of quotidian scenarios and events, supposedly exclusive to men, giving us situational comedy, plenty of couple trouble, identity crises, and friendship quirks.

Madrid — Marta Hazas, who has leapt to fame as the absolute lead of “Velvet Collection” – Movistar + first original series which it sold to Netflix – will now star opposite series creator Javier Veiga in “Pequeñas Coincidencias,” a more unusual romantic comedy which marks several new milestones in Spain’s fast evolving high-end production industry.
Produced by Atresmedia Studios, Onza Entertainment and MedioLimón, “Pequeñas Coincidencias” (“Little Coincidences”) is Amazon Prime Video’s first fiction series in Spain. Amazon Prime Video has rights to Spain and Latin America. The final installment of the First Time Fest… The First Time Fest’s closing night was held on March 4th. Hosted by Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn (The Exorcist), the Players Club lit up with flashes of cameras and smiles of the first time filmmakers anxiously awaiting whose film will win the grand prize- the chance to have their film distributed by Cinema Libre Studios.
Johanna Bennett and Mandy founded the festival after noticing there wasn’t a venue for where new filmmakers can get their film viewed and appreciated. In attendance at the closing night ceremony were Tony Bennett and Jack Huston, as well as Martin Scorsese, who presented the First John Huston Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinema to Darren Aronofsky, who was also in attendance. Anthony Rapp presented the awards as guests ate food from Chef Diane Dimeo and drank champagne by Nicolas Feuillatte. Also in attendance...

The First Time Fest was created by Johanna Bennett and Mandy Ward as a way to showcase new upcoming filmmakers and their works, and to get them a head start in their industry. The festival occurred on March 1st to 4th at The Players Club in New York, which was a club started by some well-known writers and actors, including Edwin Booth (John Wilkes Booth’s brother), Mark Twain, and more.
While the festival does support new filmmakers in their journey, it also awards previous filmmakers who have made names for themselves. Being that this is the first year of the festival, the first ever John Huston Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinema went to Darren Aronofsky. The award is named in honor of John Huston as he was a esteemed member of The Players Club, as well as considered to be one of the most influential writer, actor, director and producers of all times.

Almodóvar box office in the early 21st century: The airplaine-set comedy I'm so Excited boasts Almodóvar's biggest opening-weekend, but Volver remains his biggest worldwide hit. I'm So Excited, the Pedro Almodóvar comedy starring Javier Cámara, Lola Dueñas, Cecilia Roth, and cameos by several top Spanish cinema celebrities, was behind only the Sam Raimi / James Franco fantasy adventure Oz the Great and Powerful at the Spanish box office this past weekend (March 8 - 10). For comparison's sake, you'll find below the Spanish and worldwide grosses of Almodóvar's feature films that have been released so far in the 21st century, according to numbers found on the web site Box Office Mojo. Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

Sales Support for 11 European Films at Sundance
11 Sundance Film Festival titles are being backed this year by the European Film Promotion (EFP)'s 6 year old promotional support initiative, Film Sales Support (FSS) with the aim of paving their way into North American distribution. FSS, which is supported by the MEDIA Programme of the European Union, has been helping with the marketing of close to 50 films at Sundance since 2005. The majority of the supported European films are part of the festival’s World Cinema Dramatic and World Cinema Documentary Competition. Eight sales and one production company receive up to €5,000 for one film and €2,500 for a second or third film to boost their individual promotional campaigns at Park City. The costs covered by FSS also include bringing talent to the festival: directors such as Oliver Hirschbiegel, Nicolas Winding Refn, Anders Østergaard and Alexis dos Santosas, and actors like Liam Neeson (Five Minutes of Heaven), Edward Hogg (White Lightnin’), James Gandolini (In the Loop), Tom Hardy (Bronson), and Fele Martínez (Carmo, Hit the Road), just to mention a few.

'Darkness' lights up Spain
MADRID -- Jaume Balaguero's thriller Darkness has displaced Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her as the Spanish film with the highest-grossing opening weekend in its home territory so far this year, raking in about 1.16 million ($1.14 million) in its first three days of release, on 276 prints. Much anticipated because of its $12 million budget and a rare presale to Miramax, Darkness is Balaguero's second feature after 1999's multiple award-winning Los Sin Nombre (The Nameless) and his first English-language film. Talk to Her grossed $971,187 in its first weekend. The opening of Darkness, however, trailed Alejandro Amenabar's ghost story The Others -- also presold to Miramax -- which opened last year with more than $3 million. Darkness, starring Anna Paquin, Lena Olin, Iain Glen and Fele Martinez, had its world premiere Oct. 3 at the Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia.
