Nick Murray.
Cjz MD Nick Murray and See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman have made a detailed submission urging the Federal Government to underwrite the risk of productions having to shut down or replace the director or key cast due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Their scheme would not require any upfront funding from the government and would entail minimal risk.
If the government underwrites the risk of the Covid-19 exclusion from insurance policies, most productions would be fully covered for amounts ranging from $500,000-$2 million, they estimate.
They propose producers would pay an excess of $20,000 or 1 per cent of the production budget to cover any low impact virus-related disruption.
The maximum exposure for the government would be in the range of $70 million-$90 million, based on the unlikely event that future Covid-19 outbreaks would shut down all production and that the costs could not be managed out of the budgeted contingency and insurance excess.

The ABC today released its 72-page 2020-2022 content plan, essentially a restatement of its core values and goals which also stresses the need to engage with new and younger audiences.
The broadcaster lists its priorities over the next three years as being relevant to all Australians; delivering distinctive, public benefit content that engages mass audiences, builds national conversations and creates meaningful change; increasing the diversity of content and the people making it; and to push boundaries and take risks.
Typifying the spirit of the content plan, Sally Riley, head of drama, comedy and Indigenous, says: “In all our content we first and foremost want to entertain and surprise audiences, but it’s really important to me and my team that we engage them emotionally – that’s how you change hearts and minds. We are constantly looking for ways to defy expectations of our content and the ABC”.

Rick Kalowski.
The ABC’s highly respected head of comedy Rick Kalowski today announced his resignation after more than six years in the post.
After commissioning and overseeing the production of 80 titles, spanning pilots, series, digital content and podcasts, the executive tells If he is exhausted and needs a break.
He will stay in place until February to give the ABC ample time to recruit a successor and will pursue new career opportunities in the Australian and global screen industry. He’s having discussions about his next move but nothing is locked in.
Arguably he will step down after one of the ABC’s most distinctive and successful years in comedy, with hits such as Frayed, the fourth season of Utopia, the second of Squinters and the finales of Get Krack!n and The Letdown.
Among other shows produced under his watch, including several commissioned by his predecessor Debbie Lee, were Rosehaven,...

‘My Life is Murder.’
Cjz’s private investigator series My Life is Murder and Closer Productions’ four-part drama The Hunting have been acquired by UK broadcasters.
Multi-channel operator UKTV will screen the 10-part Cjz production, which follows Lucy Lawless as former homicide cop Alexa Crowe as she investigates baffling and bizarre murders, on its crime drama channel Alibi.

However the 7-day and 28-day figures for 10’s murder-mystery are bound to be a lot higher. The consolidated total for Five Bedrooms, for example, was 642,000 in the five metros,...

Though the series opens like any murder mystery show, with a bloody corpse and a fleeing woman, Mr. and Mrs. Murder quickly reveals itself to be aiming for something slightly different. With its jazzy opening theme, played over a comic book-style credits sequence, and its introduction of our heroes, husband and wife Charlie (Shaun Micallef) and Nicola (Kat Stewart) Buchanan, the series is something of a riff on the Thin Man series, offering up a Nick and Nora Charles for the modern age.
The Buchanans are crime scene cleaners that double as detectives, sussing out murders wherever they are called to clean up a death. They are underdogs, the guys that show up after police and forensics have had their shot and still manage to solve the case first. With the help of their niece Jess (Lucy Honigman), they use the evidence, and their way with suspects, to catch the bad guys.

If the 3rd annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards could be categorised as a David vs Goliath battle between The Rocket and The Great Gatsby, Goliath is the hands-down winner.
Baz Luhrmann.s opulent romantic drama won six awards tonight, for best film, director, adapted screenplay, lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio, supporting actor Joel Edgerton and supporting actress Elizabeth Debicki.
That.s in addition to the six awards in craft categories plus the Aacta award for outstanding achievement in visual effects bestowed on Luhrmann.s film on Tuesday.
Kim Mordaunt's The Rocket, which had 12 nominations versus 14 for Gatsby, had to be content with just one trophy, for Mordaunt.s original screenplay.
The outcome is likely to reignite the debate about the near-impossibility of comparing a lavishly-mounted 3D film financed by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, which cost $160 million, with an independently-funded Lao-set film from a first-time director budgeted at about $2 million.

Aacta.s decision this year to combine the best TV comedy and best light entertainment series into one category has drawn fire from some of the leading lights of the comedy business.
Actor/director Josh Lawson describes the move as .baffling and insulting for both categories. and complains there is only one category for acting- best performance in a TV comedy- compared with four for acting in TV dramas. .What are we to take away from this - that comedy is somehow easier? In this roundup from the Encore and Mumbrella Annual, we remember the seven bravest advertisers from the last 12 months.
1. Coles
To shamelessly bombard the Australian public with wave after wave of irritating supermarket sing-alongs shows serious balls, if not bravery. But digging up ageing rockers Status Quo for a re-recording of the original Down, Deeper and Down, who played with guitars, drums and keyboards decorated with Coles’ trademark big red hands, showed true daring. Now on a tour of Australia, the track used in the ad is the very first song on the Quo’s new album, which is sold exclusively in Coles supermarkets.
2. McDonald’s
The year after Maccas created the self-funded documentary McDonald’s Gets Grilled, the brand made another leap of faith in branded entertainment with a music video featuring X Factor finalist Johnny Ruffo. Gettin’ Serious was a 60-second R&B tune about love and Maccas’ new lamb burger,...

Granada Media Australia, the production company behind shows such as Shaun Micallef’s Mad As Hell for ABC1 and Ten’s Talkin’ ’bout My Generation, has rebranded to ITV Studios Australia in a move that “more closely” aligns the business with its British parent.
Leonie Lowe, MD of the newly rebranded company said: “Being a part of an internationally successful and recognizable business like ITV Studios, is one of the many reasons why we are an attractive production partner in the region. This is an important step in continuing to grow our business and be even more closely aligned with our parent company; and also continues our work to establish new ITV Studios’ formats in this territory.”
The news comes as the company moves offices, to Level 5, Fox Studios Australia, Moore Park, Sydney.
