Ava DuVernay’s Wings of Fire, an animated series adaptation of the family fantasy books which had been in development at Netflix since 2020, is the latest victim of animation cuts at the streamer, sources close to the project confirm to Deadline. We hear several other projects are not moving forward as well.
DuVernay’s Wings of Fire, written by Tui T. Sutherland, was to be adapted into ten 40-minute episodes. The series was centered around a bitter war that has raged for generations between the dragon tribes who inhabit the epic world of Pyrrhia. According to prophecy, five young dragons will rise to end the bloodshed and bring peace back to the land. Raised and trained in secret from the time they were hatched, the Dragonets of destiny – Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny – embark on an evolving quest that will bring them face to face with their true selves...

Sid and Marty Krofft have often said that, through their programming, they “messed with kids’ minds.” But that has proven not to be a negative thing, as their programs not only entertained but inspired future content creators.
“Instead of trying to capture grounded reality with their puppetry, [Sid and Marty] celebrated the absurd and embraced the cartoon sensibility,” says Dan Milano, creator of “Greg the Bunny,” who later worked with the Kroffts on a feature adaptation of “H.R. Pufnstuf.”
“They understand a child’s imagination and how fragmented and sweet — but with an edge of darkness — it can be.”
Milano discovered at an early age that it was entirely feasible to grow up and become a paid creator by watching Krofft productions.
“It made it so that I didn’t feel it was unusual at all that I would draw silly pictures, do silly voices, put on puppet shows, make them talk, and...

“Something’s coming,” John Goodman’s grizzled survivor whispers in the latest teaser for 10 Cloverfield Lane. Make no mistake, if there was ever any doubt that Bad Robot’s sequel (spinoff?) would feature good ol’ Clover – or some breed of the monstrous creature that attacked Manhattan in the 2008 original – last night’s TV spot ought to put those rumors to bed.
Debuting amid the onslaught of movie trailers released during Super Bowl 50, the second teaser for 10 Cloverfield Lane is a flurry of fast cuts and eerie night sequences. The money shot is, of course, included at the end, where a seemingly unnatural light engulfs a dilapidated house, only to be followed by a very familiar roar.
In, er, light of the new clip hitting the interwebs, Twitter user Dan Milano has pulled together the scene in question to compare it with Clover’s original snarl, and the results are uncanny.

Then in August, the studio hired "Alvin and the Chipmunks" director Tim Hill to direct from a script by Dan Milano ("Robot Chicken"), who did a re-write of the SS Wilson and Brent Maddock script. Now comes word that Dimension is once again not happy with the story of the remake and has brought on Matt Lieberman to do another re-write. Lieberman is responsible for the direct-to-video sequel "Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chief," a fourth installment in the franchise. And regarding the plan for "Short Circuit," producer David Foster previously said: "We're bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals." The planned remake of Short Circuit looks to have been given fresh impetus, as a new director is found for the project...
This story slipped under our radar at the end of last week, but we like to think it’s because we’ve built in some kind of automatic firewall to block out news of cherished 80s movies being remade. No such luck, as it happens, as we’ve now learned that long-planned remake of Short Circuit looks to be pressing ahead, after its stay in development hell.
The writers of the original film, SS Wilson and Brent Maddock, had been engaged to pen the script for the new version of the film. Subsequently, Dan Milano came in for some rewrite work, and Steve Carr (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) had signed up to direct.
However, Deadline is now reporting that Carr is no longer attached to the project, and Tim Hill is.

Hop director Tim Hill is in talks to helm Dimension Films' remake of eighties classic Short Circuit. Deadline reports that Hill is currently negotiating a deal to direct the project, a remake of the 1986 film about a military robot who gains sentience. The project was first announced back in 2008, with Paul Blart: Mall Cop's Steve Carr attached to direct. Robot Chicken writer Dan Milano has penned the film's script, (more)...

Tim Hill has landed two new directing gigs this week: Dimension Film’s Short Circuit remake and Fox’s family comedy titled (seriously) Walter the Farting Dog.
Hill is perhaps best known for directing bar-lowering hybrids like Alvin and the Chipmunks, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, and Hop, and is a disappointing step sideways from the previously attached Sc director, Steve Carr, who gained recognition recently from the abysmal Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
In other words, any hopes of Dimension’s remake capturing the same whimsical camp as the 1986 flick seems to have disappeared. The original movie starred the once ubiquitous Steve Guttenberg and centers on an experimental robot named Number 5 who, when electrocuted, becomes sentient and escapes the lab. Now, Dimension is planning a 21st century update where the lovable robot “befriends a lonely boy and his fractured family.”

Update: It's a big week for Tim Hill it seems. He's also in talks to direct Walter the Farting Dog! Looks like that pesky little Short Circuit remake is alive once again after spending a couple of years stuck in development hell. Paul Blart: Mall Cop director Steve Carr was most recently attached to the project with Dan Milano (Robot Chicken) writing the script, however, Dimension Films has since decided to bring in some new blood to offer a fresh approach. According to Deadline, they have hired Tim Hill (Hop, Alvin and the Chipmunks) to direct and oversee a new script. The fact that Hill has a lot of experience with live action / CG hybrids virtually guarantees that this is the approach they will take with the film. While it's not particularly surprising, it is a bit of a shame that today's kids will only know a fully computer-generated Johnny 5,...

Back in 2008, Dimension Films acquired the remake rights to "Short Circuit" and hired original "Short Circuit" writers SS Wilson and Brent Maddock to pen the script. Then Dan Milano ("Robot Chicken") was brought on to do a re-write. "We're bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals," said producer David Foster, adding that the robot's look won't change. And then finally in 2009, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" director Steve Carr was signed to helm. Things apparently didn't work out, because Deadline is now reporting that Tim Hill (Hop, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties) has replaced him. The original 1986 "Short Circuit" film revolves around an experimental robot manufactured to be a weapon until a lightning strike fills it with intelligence. It runs away and befriends a fractured family,...

Tim Hill ("Hop") has signed on to direct the remake of 80's classic "Short Circuit" at Dimension Films reports Deadline.
The original followed a robot named Johnny 5 who develops human feelings after being struck by lightning. Two years ago Steve Carr was to direct from Dan Milano's script.
Hill though will now supervise the writing of a new screenplay, effectively putting the remake back on the drawing board. David Foster, Ryan E. Heppe and John Hyde will produce.

Number five is alive! Dimension Films signed director Tim Hill to helm the reboot of “Short Circuit.” The 1986 film is about a talking robot that becomes alive after a lightning strike. The original film starred Ally Sheedy and Steve Guttenberg. Hill directed a few live-action animation hybrid films including “Hop,” “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” and “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.” Dimension Films optioned the rights to a remake film back in 2009 for director Steve Carr and screenwriter Dan Milano. There are signs of life once again in the long-unplugged "Short Circuit" remake.
Dimension Films is going forward with the new adventures of Number 5 (later "Johnny 5") as the studio has hired Tim Hill to direct the robot mayhem, according to Deadline.
The project originally had Steve Carr ("Paul Blart: Mall Cop") attached to direct with Dan Milano set to write the screenplay. Things were shut down back in 2009, and now the studio has turned the power back on.
Hill ("Hop," "Alvin and the Chipmunks") will supervise a new script about an experimental military robot designed to be the perfect weapon that becomes sentient (and lovable) after it's struck by lightning.
The original "Short Circuit" was released in 1986 and starred Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens (and his rather peculiar accent). Stevens and Johnny Five returned for the 1988 sequel, "Short Circuit 2."

A reboot of the 80s cult classic Short Circuit has been floating around for quite sometime, but could never lock on to a director to helm the project. Well, Dimension Films has ended their three-year search and has settled for Hop director Tim Hill. Considering that the previous director was Paul Blart: Mall Cop’s Steve Carr, one cannot consider the newly hired Hill an upgrade. Deadline was the first to jump on the news that the studio hired Hill.
Hill was also brought on board to pen a new script. Originally Dan Milano did rewrites on the script that was drafted by the original Short Circuit directors S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock. Back then he script was being called “a robot reboot that brings the iconic Johnny 5 into the 21st century.”

A couple of updates on directors. First up, via Deadline, Dimension Films is signing on Tim Hill, director of Muppets from Space, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Hop, for their Short Circuit remake/reboot, about the robot Johnny 5 who comes alive. We've known this was coming for quite a while, so it's no surprise. The script is getting revised by Hill, from an original draft by Dan Milano. David Foster, who produced the original, is producing with Ryan E. Heppe & John Hyde. Secondly, THR/Variety are reporting that Kenneth Branagh is considering drecting the Fox adaptation of The Guernsey Literary. Kenneth Branagh is considering an offer from 20th Century Fox to direct an adaptation of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a 2008 novel written by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows that follows an author swarmed by letters from inhabitants of her...

That loveable Johnny 5 will be returning to the big screen, but in a remake of Short Circuit. The film has been in development since 2009, and Deadline is now reporting that Tim Hill (Alvin and the Chipmunks) has been assigned to direct the remake. Steve Carr (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) and Dan Milano wrote the script, but no details are known about the plot just yet.

In 2008 Dimension Films picked up the rights to remake [1] the mid-'80s robot film Short Circuit, but as is often the case with projects like these, actually getting the picture to a position that is ready to shoot is taking some time. Now there's a new director: Tim Hill, who will also oversee the creation of a new script. Deadline [2] has the news on the hire, noting that Tim Hill is the director of this year's Easter Bunny picture Hop, as well as of Alvin and the Chipmunks. If that sounds dodgy, consider that the last director [3] on the project was Steve Carr, who made Paul Blart: Mall Cop, as well as Next Friday, Dr. Doolittle 2 and Daddy Day Care. If nothing else, the sequence of those two hires makes the studio's intent pretty clear: the goal is something very mainstream, and very easily digestible. Original Short Circuit creators S.

Tim Hill (Hop, Alvin and the Chipmunks) looks set to helm Dimension Films’ sacreligious (well at least to me) remake of the classic 1986 film Short Circuit, according to Deadline.
Originally set to be directed by Steve Carr (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) the movie features a script from Robot Chicken’s Dan Milano, and will retell the story of Johnny 5, an experimental military robot who, after getting struck by lightning, gains sentience.

Here's the full list of winners from the 38th annual Annie Awards. DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon sept the awards with 10 trophies including the award for Best Animated Feature, which is what I hoped would happen. That was my favorite animated movie of the year.
Pixar / Disney Boycotted the awards because they feel that the International Animated Film Society voters favor DreamWorks even though Up won the Best Animated Feature award last year. As much as I love Pixar animation, just because they don't win an award doesn't mean it's the end of the world, and I don't see why they feel they need to boycott. Just because they are Pixar doesn't mean every movie they make has to win.
According to THR "two years ago, questions about the voting were raised when Dwa's Kung Fu Panda swept the Annies feature categories, winning ten trophies and shutting out Pixar's Wall-e,...

The Vince Lombardi Trophy wasn't the only piece of hardware handed out this weekend. The 38th annual Annie Awards took place as well with the DreamWorks film How to Train Your Dragon sweeping many of the regular awards (which was to be expected with Disney/Pixar boycotting the awards [1] because of judging procedures they feel favor DreamWorks.) The highlight of the night, however, was when director Brad Bird was awarded one of three Windsor McCay Awards for career achievement (The others went to Eric Goldberg and Matt Groening). Bird couldn't be there to accept in person so he video taped an acceptance speech from the Vancouver set of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. Most of the video package highlighted Bird's incredibly varied history in animation (including The Simpsons, The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille and more) but then things take a turn for the worse. Check it out after the jump...

The Annie Awards, Animation's Highest Honor, went all the way for DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon!" The fun, animated film, originally received 15 nominations and won 10 trophies including Best Animated Feature.
Given by the International Animated Film Society, the 38th annual Annie Awards was not without controversy. Apparently, Disney and Pixar announced they would no longer participate in the annual awards because of their concerns over how the event is judged.
The studios claimed the Annie Awards have always been slighted towards DreamWorks Animation. And this year, both DreamWorks film ("How to Train Your Dragon") and TV ("Kung Fu Panda Holiday") topped the Annie Awards.
"Dragon," featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, and Craig Ferguson, beat Annie contenders such as Universal's "Despicable Me," Disney's "Tangled," Sony Pictures Classics' "The Illusionist," and Pixar's "Toy Story 3" for best animated feature. With awards season is underway comes the 38th Annual Annie Award nominations, which recognize the year’s best work in animation. Since the creation of the animation-specific Oscar category in 2001, the Annies have predicted the Academy Award winner every year except 2006 and 2008.
Unfortunately, the award has been tainted by controversy after CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg reportedly bought each DreamWorks Animation employee a membership in the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, skewing the voting in the studio’s favor. This likely resulted in a surprise sweep by DreamWorks Animations’ Kung Fu Panda at the Annies in 2008-2009 over Pixar’s eventual Oscar winner, Wall-e.
Disney Studios has since pulled its official support of the event and submissions for the awards, though individual animators are able to submit their films themselves. As a result, the rules were changed for individual achievement categories, but Disney sought a neutral committee of animators from every studio to propose and approve guidelines.
