One of the most acclaimed writers of genre fiction in Japan, Miyuki Miyabe has been the recipient of numerous literary awards, while her works have been translated into over a dozen languages and found their way to the big and small screen numerous times. “The Devil's Whisper” however, seems to be on a lower level than some of her other works, as in the case of “Shadow Familly” or “All She Was Worth”. Let us take things from the beginning though.

Apparently I’m a few days late on this one, so I apologize if you’ve already seen the trailer for Byeon Yeong-joo’s upcoming South Korean suspense yarn “Train”. The film is based on a beloved novel by popular Japanese author Miyuki Miyabe, one that follows the danger and intrigue associated with being asked to help locate a missing person. Turns out it’s a lot more perilous than I thought it would be. Amazing. Officially, here’s what the film is all about: When a beautiful young woman disappears, a former detective is asked by the woman’s fiancée to help find her and he quickly finds out she is not who she claims to be. “Train” stars Lee Seon-gyoon, Kim Min-hee, Jo Seong-ha, Kim Byeol, and Jang Dae-yoon. If, like me, you’re a fan of South Korean thrillers, you may have an interest in the clip embedded below.

Many of you probably already know by now that Neil Gaiman picked up the 2009 Newbery Award for The Graveyard Book. If you’ve completely forgotten your unhappy childhood, I’ll remind you that the Newbery Medal is the most prestigious award given out in children’s publishing; all the books your parents’ friends gave you for your birthday and Christmas had the medal stamped on it.
But unless you’re connected to the children’s book world, you might not have paid attention to all the other awards the American Library Association handed out today. The Bachelder Award is given to the “most outstanding” book published in a foreign language. Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit by Nahoko Uehashi (published by, yes, Harry Potter’s American publisher, Arthur A. Levine) picked up the laurels this year. The award comes a week after the animated series based on the novel was yanked...

BVI to fund 'Brave Story'
Buena Vista International will invest in its first Japanese animated feature, Brave Story, based on the novel by best-selling author Miyuki Miyabe about the adventures of a young boy who delves into a fantasy world to save his ailing mother. The deal is part of a initiative announced Monday by Fuji Television Network, Japan's leading broadcaster and the largest film-production studio, to develop and produce full-length feature animation together with Gonzo Digimation, one of Japan's premiere digital animation houses. Chihiro Kameyama, head of Fuji Television's motion picture department, said that the Fuji-Gonzo venture will spend $30 million for three animated features for the world market over six years. The big screen-adaptation of Brave Story will be a combination of animation and 3D CG. In addition to its co-investment, BVI will also distribute the film worldwide. Fuji Television announced in May that it invested $3.2 million dollars in Gonzo Digimation.
