Alan Morinis was born into a secular Jewish home in Toronto. He
graduated from Toronto's York University with a B.A. in anthropology,
and then attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. He
graduated from Oxford with a master's degree, and then a doctorate in
1980. His doctoral research was on the pilgrimages Hindus make to the
many sacred places in India. He spent three years living in India
before deciding to make his home in Vancouver in 1980 where he taught
university and later became a film and television producer. In 1997 his
film company collapsed and Alan returned to his studies, now exploring
his own roots with a specific emphasis on the Jewish tradition of
Mussar.
