Exclusive: Vertical has acquired North American rights to the neo-noir The Long Game, based on the acclaimed short story by New York Times bestselling author Janet Fitch (White Oleander), slating it for release in theaters and on demand in 2025.
Marking the directorial debut of Jace Anderson, who wrote the script with husband Adam Gierasch, The Long Game sees Oscar nom Kathleen Turner return to the genre in which she burst upon the scene with Body Heat, alongside Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children), and newcomer Sekai Abenì.
Abenì plays Holly Sloan, who needs a break. When she meets and falls for grifter Richard Metzger (Haley), it’s not quite love at first sight, but perhaps an opportunity to help her career. And all Holly has to do is pull a little con on ’80s starlet Mariah McKay (Turner), a rich recluse who has faded into a Norma Desmond-like obscurity.

"No two words in the English language more harmful than: 'Good job.'" Sony Classics has announced an official re-release of the 2014 hit film Whiplash, directed by Damien Chazelle. This was the big film that launched his career! I was there back at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival when this premiered and took the festival by storm. Everyone was talking about it non-stop! It won the Audience Award! Then it went on to become a big hit at the box office and it even won some Oscars (J.K. Simmons got one!) and then Damien Chazelle went on to make La La Land next and the rest is history. "A masterpiece returns to theaters for its 10th Anniversary." A promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory on the East Coast where his dreams of real greatness are mentored by a ruthless instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.

An older woman’s dead body lies on the floor in the opening scene of writer/director Laurence Vannicelli’s Mother, May I? The camera pulls back slowly, revealing a rustic but lived-in cabin near a lake. This is followed by a brisk montage as the body is collected, cleaned, and finally incinerated before the ash is poured into a plastic container and presented to her son, Emmett (Kyle Gallner).
When the funeral director (Michael Giannone) offers his condolences and suggests a more attractive urn for the remains, Emmett promptly declines. Immediately after obtaining the ashes, Emmett and his fiancé Anya (Holland Roden) drive back to the cottage, where Emmett offers the following eulogy: “Thank you for giving me life. And the house.” He then dumps the ashes, without ceremony, into the lake, observing that “She’s fish food” compared to the plastic container that “is gonna last forever.”

As the film opens Emmet’s mother has just died and left her large house in the country to him, the closest thing to contact they’ve had in years. He plans on cleaning it up and selling it Asap, the money will put them in a better position to start their own family. She sees...

"A boy's best friend is his mother." Dark Sky Films has unveiled an official trailer for the indie horror film called Mother, May I?, made by filmmaker Laurence Vannicelli. This premiered recently a genre festival, and opens on VOD to watch this summer in July. When his fiancé, Anya, starts behaving like his recently deceased mother, Emmett is forced into a nightmarish game of therapy... or is it a possession? He then tries mushrooms to let go of his trauma from his past involving his mother, but it seems to make things worse. In this trippy horror film, actors Kyle Gallner and Holland Roden experience a strange, Oedipal nightmare that involves a dead mom, some magic mushrooms, and an unexpected transformation. The small indie cast also includes Michael Giannone and Chris Mulkey. This looks super creepy (I don't want to experience any of this) and surreal, with lots of strange...

This Friday sees the release of a “coming of age” story with a couple of very interesting twists. Yes, it’s about a young woman yearning to break free of her childhood home as she approaches the end of high school. Of course, there’s all the college prep, changing friendships, and even a new budding romance. Now, here’s the big detour: she’s conflicted as she believes her folks can’t really fend for themselves. In fact, many might think that she’s really “raising” them. So there’s the conflict between exploration and guilt. And it is “inspired by real events”, in fact, it’s a dramatized take on a documentary from a couple of years ago. Plus it touches on many similar themes as a film from earlier in the month. So, with this young woman’s blossoming new life, could she be the title’s Wildflower?...

"I wanna be still, the way I want to get still." 1091 Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie, very dark comedy titled Killing Eleanor, which premiered at the Scad Savannah Film Festival and St. Louis Film Festival last year. A new film from director Rich Newey, this off-beat dramedy involves two women who strike up a friendship and a deal to help each other get through, or get out of, life. A terminally-ill old lady convinces a self-destructive pain killer addict to help kill her, in exchange for clean urine. Their right to die odyssey is filled with complications as Eleanor's past and Natalie's lies catch up with them. Uultimately, helping Eleanor die with dignity might just teach Natalie to live with dignity. Annika Marks co-stars with Jenny O'Hara, and with a cast including Jane Kaczmarek, Betsy Brandt, Thomas Sadoski, Camryn Manheim, and Chris Mulkey. Seems like...

There have been a number of fairly recent horror/thriller movies that have been marketed as the horror or ‘adult’ version of Home Alone. Now, Home Alone is one of my favourite movies ever and a more adult orientated version should be perfect. Unfortunately it’s not quite as simple as that and although 1989’s Deadly Games is great, nothing since has really captured that same Christmas feeling with a bit more of an edge. How To Deter A Robber is the latest movie to try.
In it, we see a young couple initially suspected of the number of burglaries in their small town. But when their own home gets robbed, they have to face off against the real criminals.

The story of a high school girl who’s forced — alongside her dimwitted boyfriend and kind uncle — to fend off a pair of armed thieves, “How to Deter a Robber” delivers the blandest take possible on its home-invasion scenario. With low stakes and even lower energy, writer-director Maria Bissell’s feature debut isn’t sure if it’s a thriller with amusing elements or a comedy of criminal absurdity. What it winds up being, therefore, is neither,
During a Christmas getaway at a lakeside cabin, Madison (Vanessa Marano) spars incessantly with her mother, Charlotte (Gabrielle Carteris), while failing to come up with a college application essay that impresses any of her relatives. Bored and annoyed, she and her immature beau, Jimmy (Benjamin Papac), spy a light on in the neighbor’s house and — in a decision that seems unbelievable from the get-go — decide to break in, play with the absent...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! Joining us this month is Tarik Davis, a writer and actor whose work stretches across media platforms, from film and television to online content and even stage productions. He’s currently featured on Peacock’s The Amber Ruffin Show, where his horror sensibilities can’t help but peek through from time to time. Horror fans should also check him out in the short film Page One, the Stakes is High essay series that he wrote to explore hate and fascism through the lens of vampire films, and his video "Your 21st Century Woke Horror Host: Addison Hadley."
Given Davis’ eclectic mix of horror and sci-fi inspirations, I was excited when he recommended Jack Sholder’s 1987 film, The Hidden. I’ve had The Hidden on my radar ever since I heard it described as a better version of Jason Goes to Hell,...

"Closure is the most detestable word..." Legacy Distribution has released the official trailer for The World Without You, an emotionally-charged indie familial drama marking the feature directorial debut of writer / director Damon Shalit. It first premiered at the Dances With Films Festival last year, and is finally getting a VOD release this fall. A family is brought together for the one-year anniversary of the death of their son Leo, a journalist killed while on assignment in Iraq. Byrne, Chris Mulkey, James Tupper, Suzanne C. Johnson, Annika Marks, Lyndie Greenwood, Joel Reitsma, and Lynn Cohen. This film looks like it has some brutally honest things to discuss at least. Drug smuggling is a topic that has been covered by TV and film over and over. Some of the most well known include Traffic, Blow and Scarface. Emerald Run though does not cover the trafficking of drugs though, it’s the first movie I have seen that covers the trafficking of emeralds. I mention the drug smuggling movie because this by all intents and purposes is exactly that. Except for the fact that the ‘drugs’ are emeralds, everything else hits the same notes as the movies in that sub-genre.
We see a desperate man (David Chokachi) get involved in a plan to smuggle emeralds across the Mexican border. He believes he has no choice and needs the money to save his daughters life.

“Emerald Run” is one of the weirdest hodgepodges to make its way to theater screens and digital platforms in quite some time. Unfortunately, oddness is just about the only thing this muddled little indie has going for it. Despite the game efforts of lead actor David Chokachi and attractive lensing by Dp Michael Caradonna, the film — directed by Eric Etebari from a script credited to Anthony and Mariuccia Caruso — somehow manages to transition from anodyne desert noir thriller to heavy-handed faith-based melodrama without ever generating sufficient interest to be credible or compelling.
Chokachi plays John Thomas, an unemployed family man who’s understandably anxious about his teenage daughter’s medical condition — some hard-to-diagnose disease is making her life a living hell — and increasingly desperate to find a way to cover mounting medical bills. Anna (Yancy Butler), his devoutly Catholic wife, feels frequent mass attendance and some comforting words from their...

Saban Films has released the first trailer for an upcoming action thriller called Rogue Warfare. The film comes with the tagline, “when global threats rise up, one team answer the call” and that team is not the Avengers.
The movie follows “a group of skilled military elite from the U.S., Russia, UK, China and France join forces to fight an elite underground terrorist network.” It looks like a solid film worth checking out, but I enjoy movies like this.
Rogue Warfare comes from made stuntman/filmmaker Mike Gunther and this is supposed to be the first in a trilogy of films. "We don't know what we're walking into!" Saban Films has debuted an official trailer for an action movie titled Rogue Warfare, made by stuntman / filmmaker Mike Gunther. This is supposedly part of a trilogy of movies called the Rogue Warfare trilogy, but seems to be just a solo offering so far. The synopsis is rather vague - it only states that Rogue Warfare is about a group of skilled military elite who join forces to fight an underground terrorist network. This stars Will Yun Lee, Jermaine Love, Rory Markham, Bertrand-Xavier Corbi, Katie Keene, Fernando Chien, Gina Decesare, Michael Blalock, Mike McKee, Essam Ferris, with Chris Mulkey and Stephen Lang. This really looks like one big action extravaganza with literally no plot, since these kind of jingoistic movies only really need guns and explosions, and no plot. With two major movie accolades in one year, Chief Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the real Wonder Woman, bar none. Mimi Leder’s dramatic biography takes on a relatively small piece of Ms. Ginsburg’s life, but the simplifications aren’t a problem. It does have the feeling of an old-fashioned celebratory bio, with colorful characters and hiss-able villains. But Leder and screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman never lose track of their central theme.
