The creator of Maternal has addressed its untimely cancellation by ITV.
It was revealed earlier this month that the channel would not commission a second run of Maternal.
Maternal, starring Parminder Nagra, Lara Pulver and Lisa McGrillis, followed three doctors who return to work in a post-Covid landscape after their maternity leave ends.
The drama began in January 2023, but sadly, for fans of the show, not enough viewers tuned in to warrant a second run.
On Tuesday (11 April), creator Jacqui Honess-Martin posted a broken-heart emoji on Twitter, writing: “We had a lot more to say.”
Explaining the reasoning behind ITV’s decision, the writer continued: “The show needed a high number of viewers for @ITV to sell advertising to break even. Maternal didn’t get that number.
“It hurts that it ends here but I am incredibly proud of the show, grateful and a bit amazed that we got to do it at all.

"Bend It Like Beckham" may be a classic sports film, but Keira Knightley says that people initially warned her about doing it. During the "Boston Strangler" star's appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on March 15, host Jimmy Fallon mentioned that the 20th anniversary of the US release of the movie was this year. He asked Knightley if she always expected the movie, directed by Gurinder Chadha, to become iconic and beloved, to which she replied, "No. No, no, I mean, I literally remember telling people that I was doing it, and saying, you know, it's called 'Bend It Like Beckham,'' and them going, 'Oh, that's really embarrassing.'"
"Yeah, yeah, no, they were all like, 'Don't worry. Nobody will see it, it's fine,'" she continued. "But it was the idea of it, because you know women's soccer was not as big back then," Knightley added.

The Blacklist: [Spoiler] Makes a Surprise Return in Final Season Premiere — Plus, Grade the Episode!
We suppose The Blacklist has a number of surprises in store as it embarks on its 10th and final season — and Sunday’s premiere brought a particularly pleasant one.
Amir Arison — who left The Blacklist during last season’s finale, along with Laura Sohn as Alina Park — made a brief (but still-delightful) return as Aram Mojtabai in the episode’s opening scene. As Aram left the Metropolitan Museum of Art and returned to his bike, looking more relaxed than he has in years, he was surprised to spot Red across the street, looking worse than he has in years: bearded,...

When the 10th and final season NBC’s venerable spy drama The Blacklist premieres on Sunday, February 26, Raymond Reddington (James Spader) has gone missing and the FBI’s Special Task Force is down by two other agents. (Amir Arison’s and Laura Sohn’s characters exited in last season’s finale.) Who will fill the gap? Enter Siya Malik. Played by Anya Banerjee, Siya is an operative with Britain’s MI6 and the daughter of CIA agent Meera Malik (Parminder Nagra), who was murdered in Season 1, on an operation with Donald Ressler, Diego Klattenhoff. TV Insider has the exclusive first look at Banerjee’s first scene in The Blacklist Season 10 premiere. As seen in Siya’s introduction above, the character is whip-smart and already knows more top-secret intel than the feds are comfortable with, all thanks to her mother’s firsthand experience. “Siya is super quick-witted, funny, and skilled,” says Banerjee,...

After a few days of fan frenzy over an unverified Instagram photo announcing the final season of The Blacklist, NBC confirmed on Feb. 1, 2023, that season 10 will be the last chapter of the enigmatic crime drama. These days, it’s rare for a show to tell 10 years’ worth of stories. The Blacklist’s ultimate chronicle premieres on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt as Raymond Reddington (James Spader) confronts unparalleled danger. With Reddington’s covert role as an FBI informant facing exposure, former Blacklisters will unite against him in their lethal desire for revenge – testing Red and the FBI Task Force as never before.
John Eisendrath, showrunner and executive producer, said “[a]fter 10 years, hundreds of ‘Blacklist’ cases and more than 200 episodes produced, we’re honored to reach our conclusion. It’s been incredibly fun to create the strange, devious and delightful Blacklisters to challenge Raymond Reddington and our FBI Task Force each week.

Maternal, ITV’s new drama about motherhood and practising medicine, opens with an alarming scene of choreographed chaos. Three female doctors, overwhelmed and hideously underslept, attempt to feed their rascal children breakfast, dress them for day care, and separate them from their overspilling toy boxes in time for drop-off. For each, it’s the first day back from maternity leave, though this hectic fire drill, or a version of it, will recreate itself every morning, just as it does in homes dotted throughout the UK and beyond (my own included). Maryam (played by Parminder Nagra) is a paediatric registrar returning to work after almost two years of continuous maternity leave. She dares to ask aloud the question that can doom a working mum – or any stripe of new mum, for that matter – to crushing guilt. “What if I hate being away from them?” she shouts to her husband across the...

With everything going the way it is in the world right now, we’re laughing to keep less cheery emotions at bay. At least this bizarre, still-very-much-in-progress century has already produced any number of great comedies that you can fire up any time you need a serotonin burst, thanks to the ever-growing cadre of streaming services. The pandemic may be starting to recede but the specter of war and a tortured economy have occupied our minds instead: so, in desperate need of some humor, we thought it was more important than ever to give our Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century list, originally published in 2017 (and last updated in August 2021), a rethink.
We’ve added 25 new films to the Top 50 list we unveiled in August. At that time, we dropped a number of titles from the original list that are funny, but not necessarily comedies. And we’ve added some...

My parents were born and raised in Kolkata, India, and experienced the golden age of Bengali cinema. They could see themselves in characters onscreen solving mysteries like Soumitra Chatterjee in “Feluda,” courting like legendary stars Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen, and living everyday village life as seen through the poignant lens of Satyajit Ray.
As a first generation Bengali-American girl, I grew up with two different cultures in a suburban, Irish-Catholic neighborhood. I went to Catholic school for six years, but I also went to Hindu temple camp and spent most of my summer vacations in Kolkata. I speak fluent Bengali and slayed my AP English exam. Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio and his Htm Television partner, Episodes and Flack producer Jimmy Mulville, have struck a first-look deal with 20th Television.
It comes as the pair, who produce series such as BBC drama Bloodlands and ITV drama Trigger Point via Htm, are looking to expand into the U.S.
Deadline revealed in September that Htm was also producing crime drama Di Ray starring ER’s Parminder Nagra and written by Line of Duty’s Maya Sondhi, for ITV.
It marks a return to the U.S. for Mercurio, who had previously written a number of U.S. pilots that never made it. He told Deadline in 2019 that he was looking to the States for projects after he had got his cop thriller Line of Duty running smoothly on BBC One.
He said that he’d written a number of pilots between medical drama Bodies, which was the first collaboration between the pair,...

ER alum Parminder Nagra is set to star in a new British crime drama series, Di Ray, from Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio and one of its stars Maya Sondhi. British broadcaster ITV has picked up the four-part series, which revolves around Birmingham-based police officer Rachita Ray, who takes on a case that forces her to face a lifelong personal conflict between her British identity and her South Asian heritage. The story will follow a murder investigation while at the same time exploring issues of racism in the workplace. Nagra, perhaps best known for her role as Dr. Neela Rasgotra in the NBC medical drama series ER, will play Ray, who is promoted to the murder unit to investigate what is described as a “culturally specific homicide.” Ray is disappointed, believing she was chosen for her ethnicity rather than her skillset. However, she is determined to find the killer and confront her colleagues’ biases.
