Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap won the best Irish film award at the Galway Film Fleadh last night (July 14), and also took home the inaugural audience and Irish language film awards.
Kneecap, which scored the audience award at Sundance, was the Fleadh’s opening night film, with the band arriving in the city in their trademark anarchic style, on top of a Land Rover adorned with Palestinian flags and carrying flares.
The film is based on the origin story of the Irish-language rap trio from west Belfast. It is produced by Trevor Birney of Belfast-based Fine Point Films and Jack Tarling...

In most ways, “Echoes” is just another wacky Netflix mystery show: questionably written, filled with recognizable B-listers, and filmed in such a way that if you didn’t already know it was a Netflix show, you’d be able to figure it out pretty quick. But in time, starting about halfway through the seven-episode limited series, this particular wacky Netflix mystery show becomes something a whole lot weirder and a whole lot more interesting than most that have come before.
Michelle Monaghan plays identical twins Gina and Leni, who have spent their entire lives switching places with total ease. Gina may have moved to Hollywood and lost the soft country twang she grew up with, but she can slip back into it and Leni can slip out of it so easily that it’s almost as if there is no difference between them anymore, which is sort of the point.

Enough time has passed that I don’t feel guilty revealing that Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige builds to a magical reveal that ties together the film’s themes about twins, doppelgängers and whatnot. Don’t worry, it’s more complicated than that, but the film (and its literary source material) understand that it’s better to convey key information in a fleeting shot likely to confuse much of the audience than to expend so much effort spelling things out that the magic vanishes entirely. Sure, there are entire shows dedicated to pulling back the curtain on the secrets of prestidigitation, but I’m going to wager that many (most?) viewers are more interested in being properly amazed.

The media's obsession with mysteries involving twins is showing no signs of slowing down, and Netflix's latest effort looks like a surefire hit.
Michelle Monaghan is pulling double duty on this one from co-showrunners Brian Yorkey (13 Reasons Why) and Quinton Peeples (Runaways).
Given the previous shows the creatives worked on, we're inclined to believe this will have twists and turns coming from all directions, and that's what we like best.
"Echoes is a mystery thriller about two identical twins, Leni and Gina, who share a dangerous secret," the spoilery synopsis reads.
"Since they were children, Leni and Gina have secretly swapped lives, culminating in a double life as adults: they share two homes, two husbands, and a child but everything in their perfectly choreographed world is thrown into disarray when one of the sisters goes missing."
It certainly sounds similar to The CW's Ringer.

“‘This is Us’ is a handbook for living,” explains Chris Sullivan when describing the shocking Season 5 finale of NBC’s Emmy-winning drama. “Dan Fogelman has created this kind of handbook for relationships and he’s exploring every aspect of relationships. I think I realized early on, if he’s going to explore every aspect of a relationship, then he’s probably going to explore the dissolution of a relationship. Among them were Josephine Mackerras, who took home Best Direction of A Feature Film (Budget under $1M) for the French-language Alice; Maya Newell whose In My Blood It Runs saw her win Best Direction of a Documentary Feature, and Emma Freeman, who won Best Direction of a TV or SVOD Mini-Series for Stateless: Episode 3.

That's a wrap on Council of Dads.
The season finale served as the series finale after NBC announced the show's premature cancellation.
On Council of Dads Season 1 Episode 10, we say goodbye to the Perry family way too soon.
It's possible the writers had a feeling they might not be renewed for another season, considering the way most of the storylines received closure.
But, that cliffhanger! It's now even more disappointing NBC chose to leave us hanging on that note.
Based on what we've learned about these characters, I'm pretty certain Larry chose not to drink after getting a text from Robin. But, we'll never know for sure.
He spent the entire season working through his guilt towards his daughter and how he treated her in the past. He made a conscious effort to change and show up for the Perry family.
Of course, he feels bad that he's the one...

NBC has opted not to renew family drama Council of Dads, sources confirm to Deadline. The decision comes two episodes before the end of the drama’s Season 1 run. Co-star J. August Richards revealed the cancellation in an Instagram post, noting that “tonight is my favorite episode of the season!!!” (You can read his message to fans below)
Council of Dads premiered on March 24 following the season finale of This Is Us. It was the second consecutive drama series in the mold of This Is Us launched by NBC that did not go beyond one season, following last season’s The Village. Council of Dads ranks as one of NBC’s lowest rated drama series of the season. It joins fellow freshman NBC series Bluff City Law, Lincoln Rhyme, Perfect Harmony, Indebted and Sunnyside which all have been canceled. The one NBC first-year scripted show to make it to Season 2 is Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.

We've got some bad news, Council of Dads fans.
NBC has decided to not move forward with a second season of the series.
While no official announcement has been made by the network, sources close to the show have confirmed the cancellation.
So, that means Council of Dads Season 1 Episode 10 will ultimately serve as the series finale, as well as the season's.
Council of Dads was a newcomer this season, often compared to NBC's popular family drama This Is Us.
It was created by Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, both known for their work on ABC's Grey's Anatomy.
The cast and crew are heartbroken over the news that they won't be able to continue the story of the Perry family.
Inspired by the book "The Council of Dads" by Bruce Fieler, the series followed the story of Scott Perry and his family.

Crickets — a new band featuring members of Le Tigre and Faith No More — have released a thumping new reprisal of toxic masculinity, “Elastic,” set to appear on their upcoming self-titled debut album, out July 17th via Muddguts.
The track is centered around a steady dance groove cut with a delightful and delirious screeching guitar riff. Jd Samson (of Le Tigre and Men) keeps her lyrics straightforward but potent, singing, “I thought that becoming the toxic masculinity that hurt me/Would give me the power to keep on livin’/But indeed I was still toxic,...

Renewing their collaboration after Stan’s The Gloaming, Madden’s Sweet Potato Films and John Molloy’s 2 Jons are preparing Wireless Hill. The second episode of any show is the one that'll either make it or break it.
A show can survive with a bad pilot, but if the second episode is no improvement, the audience will call it quits.
Luckily, Council of Dads Season 1 Episode 2 was even better than its pilot.
The main issue with Council of Dads Season 1 Episode 1 was that it felt like both a beginning and an ending. The story could've been easily finished with the first episode. There was a hopeful resolution to the death of the patriarch of the family.
We got to know and love Scott, and we felt confident that the back-up plan he assembled would help his family process his death.
But, we should've known it wouldn't be that easy.
Three men with three separate lives aren't going to be able to suddenly put another family first. They'll have to make adjustments and switch their priorities.

The long-tail effect of “This Is Us” — the only network drama launch in recent memory to achieve its particular alchemical blend of popular and critical acclaim along with awards attention — remains very much in effect, as evidenced by “Council of Dads.” This new NBC drama would seem to take its network-mate as a template, incorporating, through shifts through time, a foundational family trauma that gives way to a clan whose structure’s unconventionality is, perhaps its strength.
Which means that “Council of Dads” — in which the widow and children of a recently deceased pillar of his community are attended to by a council of dads — has an unshakable solidity to its foundation. At its core, the family story here works, and mysteries seeded through time are intriguing enough to make staying tuned seem like an appealing proposition. Where “Council of Dads” falters is when it ventures too far onto the...

When Bruce Feiler was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in his early forties, the author and television personality concocted a creative plan to ensure that his young twin daughters would grow up with all the love and wisdom he wanted to share with them, care of a “council of dads” who would step in should he pass away. Feiler then assembled a six-man council to do just that, tapped to pick up the slack after Feiler’s passing and guide his kiddos through a tough time with love and care. Feiler never had to activate his so-called council, though he did write a bestselling book about the scheme, and it eventually spawned Joan Rater and Tony Phelan’s gentle if scattershot NBC drama “Council of Dads.”

NBC has shifted back the series premiere of its new drama “Council of Dads” by two weeks so that it will now air immediately after the Season 4 finale of “This Is Us.”
The freshman show will also be changing weeknights when it returns, as it was originally scheduled to settled into the Dan Fogelman-created drama’s 9 p.m. Tuesday slot once that series ended its current run. Now it’s going to Thursdays, with “Ellen’s Game of Games” taking over the time period from “This Is Us.”
“Council of Dads,” which was set to debut at 10/9c on Tuesday, March 10, will now premiere in that same hour on Tuesday, March 24, just after the final episode of the fourth season of “This Is Us.”

If there’s anyone that knows how to deliver a heart-wrenching death scene, it’s the team behind ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.” Created by Shonda Rhimes, the broadcast medical drama came out of the gate in 2005 with literal life and death stakes for its characters. Being set in a hospital meant that mortality was a constant theme that touched the lives of every one who walked through the doors, be they of-the-week patients or support staff, or full-time cast members — no one is immune to the cold touch of death.
Now showrun by Krista Vernoff, “Grey’s Anatomy” has become the longest-running medical drama on television and, as such, the show has accumulated a record-high body count.
There have been quite a few of memorable ones that caused tears to be shed but not buckets to be cried. Those include Bonnie Crasnoff (Monica Keena), who was admitted after a train crash...

Writer-director Chinonye Chukwu deserves all kinds of acclaim for daring to tell a story about the death penalty through the eyes of one of its enactors — a prison warden, the kind of character that’s usually reduced to a one-dimensional villain on screen. And she also should get props for attracting high-caliber talent like Alfre Woodard and Wendell Pierce for only her second full-length feature. But despite those accomplishments, “Clemency” doesn’t quite resonate.
That’s mostly because “Clemency” doesn’t effectively investigate the conflict upon which its plot hinges. Warden Bernadine Williams (Woodard) is a woman who, by nature of her profession, follows the law unequivocally. She stoically gets up each morning, heads to her prison, and oversees the men on death row — from sifting through their mounds of paperwork to calling the time they take their last breaths in the electric chair. In her world, everything is routine,...

For Variety’s Writers on Writers, Stephen Rohde pens a tribute to “Clemency” (written by Chinonye Chukwu).
The film begins and ends with a close-up of Warden Bernadine Williams, played with wrenching intensity by Alfre Woodard. There is an indelible weariness in her eyes — eyes that have witnessed far too many executions. “Clemency” is her film, but she is hardly the only one suffering in this harrowing story about the soul-killing toll the death penalty is taking on our country. Of course, the greatest toll is exacted from death row inmates themselves. They are the objects of a deeply flawed system of state killing that is so infected by racial and economic disparities and so riddled with fatal errors that we know of at least 166 innocent people wrongfully condemned to death row.
Yet rarely has a film explored the brutalizing effect the death penalty has on everyone else in the system — the wardens,...

Jack Ryan season 2 ends with few surprises, though it does lay the groundwork for some more recognizable stories.
Obviously, this article contains majors spoilers for Jack Ryan season 2.
The second season of Amazon’s Jack Ryan series with John Krasinski, which dropped a day early on Halloween, manages to address many of the viable complaints that critics levied at its first season -- while also injecting more emotional developments into an otherwise straight and narrow storyline. Krasinski’s take on Tom Clancy’s iconic character is a little bit more human this time around. Meanwhile, the latest plot that he and ex-boss James Greer (Wendell Pierce) find themselves unraveling is a bit more nuanced than season one’s global terrorist extravaganza.
Even so, Jack Ryan’s latest adventure in a dictatorial Venezuela ends pretty much the way general audiences will expect. President Nicolás Reyes (Jordi Mollà) loses...
