Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

HBO’s Band of Brothers has numerous reasons for being successful and relevant to this day – but one of the most crucial reasons remains the series’ insistence on staying true to the events in history. With a background of extensive research (enough to break one’s back), the creators of the World War epic spared no expense in bringing the tale of the Easy Company to light.

Equipped with first-hand accounts, letters, journals, interviews, historians’ documents, etc., Erik Jendresen set out with an ambition to voice a piece of history that would seem too fantastical even for a television drama. However, it was one genius aspect of the show, thought of by Steven Spielberg himself, that helped to suspend the suspension of disbelief from episodes of the series.

While in development for the Amazon Prime drama “Expats,” creator, writer and director Lulu Wang knew she had to pay tribute to the lives lost during the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Having been in China at that time as a child, she remembers how scared she was when her father nearly left to join the protest which ultimately led to the death of hundreds.
“My father was supposed to go to this protest and my mother said to him a speech, which is in the show. She said, ‘Out there, you are an ant. You can give your life and it will not make that big of a difference. They’ll forget about you. But you’re my whole world, and you’re Lulu’s whole world,'” Wang said during Variety‘s Night in the Writers Room on June 13. “I said to the studio and I said to [Nicole Kidman], ‘If I do this series,...

“Masters of the Air” doesn’t fly as high as it does without Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann. No military unit rests on the shoulders of two people, and the Eighth Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group was no different in World War II. Historically known as the Bloody 100th for the tremendous losses it endured, the fearless flyers saw some of the worst action of the war and it did so thousands of feet above the front lines.
But as a piece of cinematic storytelling, the Apple TV+ series from “Band of Brothers” trio Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman needs the profound warmth of Boyle’s Lt. Harry Crosby and Mann’s Major Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal to, ironically, ground its darkest days.
At the top of the call sheet are Austin Butler and Callum Turner, as pilots Major Gale “Buck” Cleven and Major John “Bucky” Egan, respectively.

Masters of the Air is a war drama miniseries created by John Shiban and John Orloff. Based on the Donald Miller book of the same name, it serves as a spiritual successor to 2001’s Band of Brothers. The series stars Anthony Boyle as real-life professor and navigator Lt. Harry Crosby. During an interview, Boyle spoke about working on the World War II drama and revealed several insights about its making.

Boyle also revealed the piece of advice the show’s team received directly from Tom Hanks, who is credited as an executive producer on the series. Given the success of the series, it is safe to say that Hanks’ advice was on point and served the team well. Here is what Anthony Boyle had to say about Tom Hanks’ advice for Masters of the Air.

When writer John Orloff took on the task of turning historian Donald L. Miller’s “Masters of the Air” into a series for Apple TV+, one task was paramount: putting the audience in the shoes of the Air Force pilots whose World War II exploits were documented in Miller’s book. “We all know what infantry combat looks like,” Orloff told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “We haven’t really seen what these air bomber combat missions were really like.” Knowing that authenticity, both in terms of historical detail and visceral emotional experience, would be key, Orloff turned to visual effects supervisor Stephen Rosenbaum to bring the era and action to life. Although Rosenbaum is known for his groundbreaking work in the fantasy realm on films like James Cameron’s “Avatar,” for “Masters of the Air,” he adhered strictly to reality.

John Orloff, the co-creator of Apple TV+ miniseries Masters of the Air, has signed with UTA for representation in all areas.
The move comes after Orloff signed with Verve for representation in January, the same month his high profile and high priced war drama launched. However, in February, the agency became embroiled in an internal battle amongst partners, resulting in the ousting of founding partner Bill Weinstein. Several lit clients were caught up in the churn. Brian K. Vaughan, the comics author and screenwriter, also switched agencies and signed with UTA in March.
Orloff adapted the acclaimed memoir by Mariane Pearl, A Mighty Heart, into a 2007 drama that starred Angelina Jolie and counted Brad Pitt as among its producers. He earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for best first screenplay for his script.
Orloff also co-wrote the screenplay for Zack Snyder’s animated 2010 feature Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,...

Executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have reunited for a third historical mini-series, this time taking to the skies with Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air.” The series follows the members of the 100th Bomb Group, a Boeing B-17 heavy bomber unit that operated in the Air Force during WWII. This isn’t Hanks and Spielberg’s first war-time series, however. They previously executive produced “The Pacific,” which charted the US Marine Corps’ actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Before that, they created “Band of Brothers,” which dramatized the story of the Easy Company of the US Army, who went on a mission in Europe during WWII.

“Masters of the Air” soared to become Apple TV+’s highest-watched series launch ever when the first episodes dropped in January. While it might seem like a no-brainer that the team behind “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific” — including Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman — would hit it out of the park with a new World War II series, it wasn’t plain sailing, in large part thanks to Covid, which resulted in numerous delays. “It made the production very difficult,” Goetzman told Variety ahead of the series launch.
But also, in keeping with Apple TV+’s low-key publicity strategy, “Masters of the Air” somehow debuted on the streamer with minimal publicity, despite the fact that in the period between being pre- and post-production its key cast, including Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan and Ncuti Gatwa had been propelled from jobbing actors to leading men.

When it comes to chronicling the bravery of the Greatest Generation during World War II, few if any can claim to have done it better than Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
The Oscar-winning duo – whose first project about the Second World War, “Saving Private Ryan,” won Spielberg his second Best Director Oscar and landed Hanks a nomination for Best Actor. They have spent decades cataloging the sacrifice of American soldiers during WWII across multiple acclaimed television projects, including “Band of Brothers” (focused on Army paratroopers) and “The Pacific” (focused on Marines).
This year, Spielberg and Hanks are back again with “Masters of the Air,” the Apple TV+ limited series about the 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force (also known as the Bloody Hundredth) who flew deadly and dangerous missions over Germany during World War II. Miller’s “Masters of the Air,” a non-fiction account of the Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group during World War II, he knew he wanted to give the audience a visceral sense of what it was like to there in the planes.

Masters of the Air is the newest tribute to World War II veterans from Spielberg and Hanks. All of their projects on the subject, including Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and The Pacific, concentrate on different aspects of the Great War and make for good viewing companion pieces. As the new series follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany, the review from our own Alex Maidy spoke highly of the show. He stated, “It is unlikely that any series will equal the acclaim that Band of Brothers achieved. Still, the blend of feature film directors and a cast of actors more than up to the task, Masters of the Air is a powerful companion to that HBO series and ranks slightly higher than The Pacific.

“Masters of the Air” launched with more viewers in its opening weekend than any Apple TV+ series ever has in its first season, according to the streamer. Though an exact number of viewers was not made available, that puts the epic war miniseries launch above other high-profile original titles like “Hijack,” “The Morning Show” and “Severance.”
Remarkably, following the premiere of “Masters of the Air,” viewership across all of Apple TV+ climbed by 65% worldwide when compared to the previous seven-day period. The streamer also maintained double-digit growth across more than 100 territories.
“Masters of the Air” is currently debuting new episodes, with its sixth installment premiering on Friday, Feb. 23. The finale will bow on the streamer on March 15.

Those who fought in World War II are considered the Greatest Generation. And executive producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman paid homage to these young men who risked life and limb during the global conflict in their award-winning 2001 HBO series “Band of Brothers” and 2010’s “The Pacific.” And now they’ve taken to the not-so-friendly skies in their latest World War II series, Apple TV +’s “Masters of the Air.”

The World War II drama series "Masters of the Air," created by John Shiban and John Orloff and currently airing on AppleTV+, takes place in 1943 and follows Usaaf majors as they are transferred to England to aid the Allied war effort. Masters of the Air is finally here and the fans of The Pacific and Band of Brothers are going crazy over the masterfully created World War II series. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the Apple TV+ series revolves around the pilots of bomber planes in the 100th Bomb Group as they fight with everything they have to protect the world from Nazis. Based on a novel by Donald L. Miller titled Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, the series is adapted for television by John Shiban and John Orloff, it feels like the third entry in the World War II shows by Spielberg and Hanks. Even before they earned Oscar nominations for their respective performances in “Elvis” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan were already flying high. As Austin Butler put the finishing touches on his eventual Oscar-nominated performance as Elvis Presley, his Elvis co-star Tom Hanks was already envisioning the budding superstar’s next move. In early 2021, just weeks before Elvis was scheduled to wrap, Hanks took Butler to dinner and pitched him Masters of the Air, the spiritual follow-up to the Emmy-winning miniseries Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Masters of the Air, created by John Orloff, is one of those series that relies not only on the filmmaking but also on the theme around which it revolves. World War II movies are a genre in themselves, and there have been miniseries like Band of Brothers that are etched in people’s memories as one of the greatest shows ever made. Masters of the Air thus has some great help and some great competition as well, but overall, the series is expected to be an epic narrative about the 100th Bomber Squads, who put their lives on the line to carry out the mission to weaken Nazi Germany during World War 2. There are some heavy hitters in the series, and we expect some outstanding performances out of them all.

In one episode of the new World War II epic Masters of the Air, a character collapses from exhaustion and sleeps through the events of D-Day, which were so memorably dramatized in Saving Private Ryan. In another, we realize that several characters are being held in the same Pow camp that was the subject of the classic Sixties film The Great Escape, and that our heroes had no idea the escape was happening until well after the fact.

At some point during the so-called peak TV era, someone, somewhere got it in their head that all prestige TV dramas have to unfold like one long movie. Indeed, time and time again, when creators sit down to talk about their new shows, they'll say things like, "We treated this like a 9-hour movie!" But here's the thing: no one wants to watch a 9-hour movie. Why can't TV just be ... TV? "Mad Men," one of the best TV shows of the peak era, told an overarching story but each episode remained, well, episodic. They were like short stories in a collection. The collection added up as a whole, but you could still take the stories individually. And the results were wonderful.

When Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg want to executive-produce a World War II drama, it’s tough to say no. The formidable duo behind HBO’s Band of Brothers and The Pacific heads back to the front lines with Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air, debuting this Friday — I’ve seen the first three episodes — and featuring a fresh-faced group of U.S. bomber pilots who take to the skies to fight the Nazis. With painstaking period detail and a stirring score, it’s a noble endeavor… but maybe it’s a bit too noble. Masters is majestic and yet sterile,...

As “Masters of the Air” nears its end, one surviving member of the Air Force’s “Bloody Hundredth” bombing group finds himself standing next to a fireplace, sipping on whiskey, and quoting the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. “Whoever fights monsters should take care not to become a monster himself,” he paraphrases for his fellow flyer, as they prepare to leave the war behind and return to their families. “Because if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes right back at you.”
In the moment, the sentiment is sound enough. Both men have experienced war, up close and personal, and both have been shaped by the harrowing combat all around them. It’s only natural to wonder what they’ll be like when they’re home, when they’re grounded, when the bombs are no longer dropping from the sky. Can they go back to their families, their wives, their kids,...

Over 22 years after the premiere of HBO’s landmark Band of Brothers and nearly 14 years after the launch of HBO’s The Pacific (not quite as good as Band of Brothers but still epic longform storytelling), executive producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg have finally brought their third World War II series to the small screen.
It is, mind you, a misnomer to say that anything associated with Masters of the Air is “small,” be it the screen or otherwise. Based on Donald L. Miller’s 2007 book of the same name and developed for Apple TV+ by John Orloff, Masters of the Air is, by any measure, huge. It boasts a mammoth ensemble of young stars in various states of ascension, requires an astonishing quantity of technical effects to achieve its high-flying narrative and, when its key moments land, is equal parts breathtaking, exhilarating and rousingly inspirational.

Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, and Callum Turner are hitting the red carpet to promote their new Apple TV+ series!
The co-stars stepped out for the UK premiere of Masters Of The Air on Monday (January 22) held at Picturehouse Central in London, England.
Here’s a synopsis of the series: Based on Donald L.

Sheer terror. You’ll feel it in your bones as the young men of America’s 100th Bomb Group — nicknamed the “Bloody Hundredth” for the heavy losses they suffered — fly raids into Nazi territory in the action-packed true story, Masters of the Air. At the center are two best friends, dashing Major Gale “Buck” Cleven (Austin Butler) and mischievous Major John “Bucky” Egan (Callum Turner). “Buck and Bucky are both romantics who grew up dreaming of flying planes,” says John Orloff, who adapted the script for the nine-episode limited series from Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name. “That’s why they each joined the Army Air Corps in 1940, 18 months before America entered the war. It wasn’t to be soldiers. It was to fly planes. But the war slowly changes them, taking them from being boy-men to men.” Apple TV+ It’s familiar territory for Orloff, co-writer...

Ever since Saving Private Ryan, it has been nearly impossible not to get excited over a Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks collaboration, especially when it comes to projects surrounding their shared love of World War II. And their latest, Masters of the Air, looks to be a stellar addition to the lineup.
This time around, executive producers Spielberg and Hanks – along with Gary Geotzman who, like the aforementioned men, helped get Band of Brothers and The Pacific on the air – take to the skies, focusing on a group in the United States Army Air Forces. While Band of Brothers and The Pacific were both monumental hits for HBO and won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries, Masters of the Air will be headed to Apple TV+, where it is no doubt one of the most highly anticipated series since the service launched.

Apple TV+ taketh away, but Apple TV+ also giveth in spades. It's been over a decade since production on the war epic "Masters of the Air" began, but the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-executive produced limited series follow-up to "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" is almost here. Originally developed as a project for HBO, "Masters of the Air" jumped over to Apple TV+ in 2019 as the first in-house production for the studio. Of course, filming a sweeping WWII drama with explosions and flight scenes will take a bit more time than, say, a relatable dramedy like "Shrinking" (not to mention the necessary delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic), but the newest trailer for the highly-anticipated series signals that our wait has not been in vain.

Hollywood is back, and Apple TV+ has the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-executive produced war epic to prove it. "Masters of the Air," the pair's long-awaited follow-up to "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific," is finally coming to the streamer in January, and the limited series' first trailer is finally here. In short, it looks incredible.
The series began production over at HBO way back in 2013, but in 2019 it moved to Apple TV, where it was the first production ever greenlit through Apple's in-house studio. Nothing about this first look at the big-budget show has a bit of generic, "in-house" feel to it, though, as it frankly looks just as sweeping, horrifying, and engrossing as Spielberg and Hanks' previous acclaimed war dramas. "Band of Brothers" writer John Orloff is co-creator of the series along with "Breaking Bad" writer-director John Shiban. The show's directorial slate is equally impressive, with...
