Joan Baez took to Instagram on Sunday to share a video of her performing “America the Beautiful” and encourage folks to get out and vote in the 2024 presidential election.
Sitting in a kitchen, she launched the clip with a sweet laugh before singing the patriotic song while playing an acoustic guitar. In her heartfelt rendition, she changed the original lyrics of “Crown thy good with brotherhood” to “Crown thy good with sisterhood” in support of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

It wouldn’t be a Newport Folk Festival without Mavis Staples leading an ensemble sing-along of “The Weight.” Staples was not on the bill at this year’s festival, so the crowd roared even louder when she appeared as a special surprise guest during the end of Hozier’s Friday evening headlining set at the festival.
Joined onstage by a slew of singers including Joan Baez (who is only officially at the festival to give a poetry reading), Nathaniel Rateliff, Madison Cunningham, Allison Russell, and more, Staples led the crowd...

Zayn Malik is gearing up to release his long-awaited fourth studio album, and he’s co-produced the upcoming LP with Grammy-winner Dave Cobb, Rolling Stone can exclusively confirm.
In working with Cobb — one of Nashville’s most accomplished and in-demand producers — Malik will explore new sonic territory and lean into pairing his unmistakable vocals with live instrumentation. The soulful singer-songwriter had spent several years writing the album at his home in rural Pennsylvania before enlisting Cobb’s help as a co-producer. There’s no release date or title yet, but...

The Tragically Hip’s Surviving Members Reunite to Pay Tribute to a Canadian Icon, Tease New Projects
When the Tragically Hip played their final show on Aug. 20, 2016, at the sold-out Rogers K-Rock Centre in the group’s native Kingston, Ontario, bassist Gord Sinclair stood onstage in awe of the moment — wondering what the future held for the larger-than-life Canadian rock band.
“There was a deep connection with the people, and as we progressed on that last tour, [lead singer Gord Downie] got stronger and stronger. By the time it got to the last show, it was just like, ‘We should be playing more,’” Sinclair tells Rolling Stone. “It was the audience,...

This grouping of Bogart’s Columbia output has one bona fide noir, a pair of exotic ‘romantic intrigue’ thrillers and three social issue pictures. It’s a good set, with films directed by John Cromwell, Nicholas Ray and Mark Robson, and with leading ladies Lizabeth Scott, Florence Marley, Marta Toren, Jody Lawrance and Jan Sterling. And the Powerhouse Indicator extras are especially well curated. Watch out — it’s Region B only.

Welcome to Ground Zero for ‘Committed Cinema’ Italian style. Director Giuiano Montaldo filmed his dream project on location in Ireland and a bit in Boston, with top stars Gian Maria Volontè and Riccardo Cucciolla. In one of the highest-profile American ‘media’ trials ever the famed immigrants Sacco and Vanzetti were tried for a crime but convicted by politics: even the judge asserted they were guilty by definition. Montaldo shows how wrongly justice can be served without whitewashing the defendants. UK actors Cyril Cusack and Milo O’Shea up the performance level, and the Ennio Morricone / Joan Baez songs have kept the film alive.

Errol Flynn goes to war! One of the last major direct-combat pictures to come out of Hollywood during the war, Raoul Walsh’s finely-crafted ode to the jungle fighters in Burma lets loose a powerful, almost frightening blast of anti-Japanese rage. Errol Flynn earned his pay slugging it out through the swamps, George Tobias provides the Brooklyn humor and Henry Hull the outrage over combat atrocities. And the English were none too happy either, claiming that the movie made it look as if America had done the heavy fighting in what was largely a Brit field of battle.

William Prince is in a better spot right now than when he started writing songs for his latest album. Grappling with the death of his father and the dissolution of a long-term relationship, the Juno-winning Canadian singer-songwriter — who turned heads with the swooning “Breathless” in 2018 — buckled down and started working on new songs. It was a survival strategy that turned out to be a prediction of the future.

The auteurists have been quiet too long about S. Sylvan Simon, the producer-director of Red Skelton and Abbout & Costello movies, and I'm not even kidding. His first claim to prominence is probably Grand Central Murder (1942), an absolute masterclass in camera blocking with large-ish groups of people, and his Skelton trilogy of Whistling in the Dark, Whistling in Dixie, and Whistling in Brooklyn would be Exhibit 2, maybe, but Lust for Gold (1949), which he was working on when he died is really strong too, and it's a noir disguised as a western with a crazy structure and you should see it.We start with a fervid voiceover read by an overheated William Prince, who's playing the author of the original book this is based on, and he's telling us about the famous Lost Dutchman Mine (so named because it was started by Spaniards then rediscovered by a German) at Superstition Mountain, and...

Prince George really loves the petting zoo! The 1-year-old royal spent a sweet afternoon at Bucklebury Farm Park in Berkshire, England, with his grandmother Carole Middleton last week. George was spotted riding high on Carole's shoulders as the two walked back to their car, and he got a little wiggly once it was time to get down - how adorable are their matching green sweaters? It's been a busy couple of months for the tiny prince, who is gearing up to turn 2 on July 22. Not only did he become a big brother when Princess Charlotte was born in May, but he's also been making lots of sweet public appearances with his parents. George made his debut on the Buckingham Palace balcony with his famous family members during the Trooping the Colour event in London last week, and days later, he had a blast playing in the grass with Kate and...

Cary Grant films on TCM: Gender-bending 'I Was a Male War Bride' (photo: Cary Grant not gay at all in 'I Was a Male War Bride') More Cary Grant films will be shown tonight, as Turner Classic Movies continues with its Star of the Month presentations. On TCM right now is the World War II action-drama Destination Tokyo (1943), in which Grant finds himself aboard a U.S. submarine, alongside John Garfield, Dane Clark, Robert Hutton, and Tom Tully, among others. The directorial debut of screenwriter Delmer Daves (The Petrified Forest, Love Affair) -- who, in the following decade, would direct a series of classy Westerns, e.g., 3:10 to Yuma, The Hanging Tree -- Destination Tokyo is pure flag-waving propaganda, plodding its way through the dangerous waters of Hollywood war-movie stereotypes and speechifying banalities. The film's key point of interest, in fact, is Grant himself -- not because he's any good,...

Paul Henreid: From Eleanor Parker to ‘The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse’ (photo: Paul Henreid and Eleanor Parker in ‘Between Two Worlds’) Paul Henreid returns this evening, as Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month of July 2013. In Of Human Bondage (1946), he stars in the old Leslie Howard role: a clubfooted medical student who falls for a ruthless waitress (Eleanor Parker, in the old Bette Davis role). Next on TCM, Henreid and Eleanor Parker are reunited in Between Two Worlds (1944), in which passengers aboard an ocean liner wonder where they are and where the hell (or heaven or purgatory) they’re going. Hollywood Canteen (1944) is a near-plotless, all-star showcase for Warner Bros.’ talent, a World War II morale-boosting follow-up to that studio’s Thank Your Lucky Stars, released the previous year. Last of the Buccaneers (1950) and Pirates of Tripoli (1955) are B pirate movies. The former is an uninspired affair,...

Eleanor Parker Now on TCM Palms Springs area resident Eleanor Parker, who turns 91 next June 26, is Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month of June. One of the best actresses of Hollywood’s studio era, Parker isn’t nearly as well-remembered today as she should be despite three Best Actress Academy Award nominations (Caged, 1950; Detective Story, 1951; Interrupted Melody, 1955), a number of box-office and/or critical hits, and a key role in one of the biggest blockbusters of all time (The Sound of Music). Hopefully, the 34 Eleanor Parker movies TCM will be showing each Monday this month — beginning tonight — will help to introduce the actress to a broader 21st-century audience. Eleanor Parker movies "When I am spotted somewhere it means that my characterizations haven’t covered up Eleanor Parker the person. I prefer it the other way around," Parker once said. In fact, the title of Doug McClelland’s 1989 Eleanor Parker bio,...

This week we’re highlighting the films of Popcorn Horror’s Blood Games. Give it a watch, then head over to vote if you like it. Why Watch? In the opening moments of this short from William Prince, a few children are playing in the courtyard of what looks like an abandoned set of buildings. The “Lord of the Flies” feeling continues as they bicker between each other, but generally goof around (ominously) without any supervision. Then the feeling grows. These kids are more than alone. There doesn’t seem to be another living being in existence. But they’re about to play a simple game that suggests they aren’t the only ones on the block. The tension in Click is pretty much immediate thanks to a droning score, a Dickensian set of buildings haunting a modern time and children who are woefully unguarded. That intrigue never lets up, and...

We’re Obsessed with this hilarious new T-Mobile Commercial — it makes us want to get up and dance!
The excitement is palpable for the Royal Wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William — we just hope it’s half as fun as the one portrayed in this new viral video!
The clip, part of an ad campaign for T-Mobile, features a hilarious take on the April 29 festivities, envisioning a British spin on the now-classic wedding video in which the party danced to Chris Brown‘s “Forever.”
Impersonators of the whole royal family, including the bride, groom, Prince Harry, Queen Elizabeth, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince Charles, get their grove on to East 17′s “House of Love,” and the result is hilarious!
We’ve been sharing this with all of our friends — isn’t it hilarious?

The blushing bride-to-be will spend her last night as a bachelorette — without Prince William by her side!
In traditional royal fashion, Kate Middleton and Prince William will not be together on the eve of their Royal Wedding!
Kate, 29, will stay at the Royal Suite of the Goring Hotel — a fabulous hot-spot just a few miles from Buckingham Palace! The room will be decked out in royal decor for the princess-to-be. A source tells People.com that the room will include a “framed prototype of the silk wedding gown that Queen Victoria wore” back in 1840!
The room is even expected to have a four-poster bed and waterproof TV — how divine! Her sister and maid-of-honor, Pippa Middleton, 27, is also expected to stay at the hotel that night.
Meanwhile, the charming Prince and hubbie-to-be, William, 28, will spend the night at Clarence House with his little brother, Prince Harry, 24. The hotel has recently undergone...

If someone were to ask us to name our top ten directors of all time, the name William Castle would sit firmly somewhere within the top five. The man was not only a true showman but also an absolute genius. If we have one regret in our tenure here at Dread Central, it is that we weren't around during Castle's heyday of insane gimmicks. The man was without question the godfather of viral marketing, and it's taken the rest of the industry decades to catch up. If you live somewhere within the Tri-State Region, we have the info on an event that you do Not want to miss!
From the Press Release
The Return Of William Castle, a 15-film festival of horror and exploitation classics by the director and master showman, complete with their original gimmicks (Emergo!, Percepto!, Illusion-o!, and others – including one created exclusively for Film Forum), will run...

Oldman And Buscemi Team Up For Scary Thriller
Gary Oldman and Steve Buscemi are teaming up for a new thriller. The Hollywood stars are expected to play murderous kidnappers who go on a rampage in Macabre. The film is based on director William Castle's 1958 film which starred William Prince and Jim Backus. In the original version, Castle used a publicity gimmick to draw in customers by insuring audience members against death from fear while watching his movie. The plot follows the two men on a small-town killing spree before they kidnap a doctor's daughter played by Rachael Leigh Cook. Filming is due to begin in the fall.
