Despite years of roles that would suggest the contrary, Natasha Lyonne doesn’t partake these days.
While discussing her performance in Azazel Jacobs‘ His Three Daughters, the Golden Globe nominee recently opened up about being typecast “as a druggie” in her career
Co-star Carrie Coon explained to Rolling Stone, “It’s funny, because none of us knew each other, but Aza wrote all of these roles for us knowing we’d complement each other. Yet none of them are tailored to who we are. I mean, I can be controlling. But it’s not like Natasha is a pothead.”
“No, I just present as one,” quipped Lyonne. “Pot’s not my bag. I’m actually an ex-junkie. But I see why he thought of me, and at first I was like, ‘Oh, no, it’s another “Here’s Natasha as a druggie”‘ — which I’ve already done so many times,...

Could “Challengers,” which moved from an awards season slot last year due to the strikes to a less prestigious March release date this year, actually be a contender after all? The psychosexual tennis drama generated a lot of buzz and a fairly impressive box office performance, and it wouldn’t be crazy to wonder if nominations for Zendaya (Best Actress), Josh O’Connor (Best Supporting Actor), and Justin Kuritzkes (Best Original Screenplay) are possible. Ok, they’re admittedly pretty unlikely, but we do predict that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross should be nominated for their pounding electronic score. The film is now available to stream on Prime Video.
“Challengers,” which hails from director Luca Guadagnino, is about a bizarre love triangle between Tashi (Zendaya), a tennis phenom whose career was derailed by an injury, her husband Art (Mike Faist), who became a superstar under her tutelage but is exhausted by his life,...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “His Three Daughters,” a passionate exploration of the hospice stage of life, and how it affects the three women of the title, as Dad is dying. Currently in theaters or streaming on Netflix beginning on September 20th.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
The three women of the title are Katie (Carrie Coon), Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne), and they are gathered together reluctantly to care for their father in New York City as he enters hospice … the final healthcare stage of death. The daughters of Vincent (Jay O. Sanders) are far-flung, with Katie nearby but an impatient mess, out-of-town Christina still in bliss over her 3-year-old daughter and half-sister Rachel as a pot smoking, online bettor who has been taking care of Vincent throughout his illness. The clash of wills in a confined apartment in mourning will take its toll.

Indie filmmaker Azazel Jacobs makes a true New York movie with “His Three Daughters,” his profound and moving drama about a trio of sisters hemorrhaging emotions about their father, who is dying in the next room. Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen deliver career-class performances as Katie, Rachel, and Christina, respectively, who stress over how to write their father’s obituary and how to come together despite years of spite between them. And tensions bubble up in a monologue-driven, theatrical directing style where Jacobs holds on the performances in long takes where other directors might want to cut to a reaction shot or somewhere else.
“I wrote it to a cutting rhythm. I tried to write the script so it would move exactly how I wanted it to film,” Jacobs, who has explored New York stories before, from “French Exit” to “The Lovers” and his breakout, “Momma’s Man,” said in a recent IndieWire interview.

Dramas about death are hard to get right, yet His Three Daughters handles the difficult topic with grace. Death is the singularly most tragic thing most people have to deal with in their lives, meaning that it’s far too simple to lean on it as a crutch to get emotional reactions from the audience. Writer/director Azazel Jacobs clearly understands that, crafting a marvelously authentic story about three sisters growing apart and coming back together in His Three Daughters.

Azazel Jacobs’ pared-down sibling showdown begins with a static shot of Carrie Coon, chic in a dark rollneck sweater, speaking levelly and lengthily to some patient recipient off-screen. It’s an opening monologue that establishes His Three Daughters as a film awash with Acting, the kind with a capital ‘A’. It feels as if it has stridden directly from the stage onto the screen.
What starts as a somewhat jarring note, however, soon settles into a captivating rhythm. Coon plays forthright Katie, mother to an uncooperative teenager and drinker of generous pourings of wine, whose qualms about her pot-smoking sister Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) manifest as passive-aggressive paper-cut takedowns. Hovering tentatively between the pair is timid former Deadhead Christina (Elizabeth Olsen), a constant look of concern seizing her face.

You may love your family, though you might not like them very much, and just because you’re kin doesn’t mean you have anything in common. Take, for example, the three grown siblings who find themselves forced to share the same air in His Three Daughters. There is Katie (Carrie Coon), a Type-a control freak who’s a Karen by any other name, as well as a lover of red wine and passive-aggressiveness. There is Christina (Elizabeth Olsen), the resident peacekeeper and, much to her sisters’ chagrin, a longtime Deadhead.

Azazel Jacobs’ His Three Daughters opens on Katie (Carrie Coon), who spits out a winded monologue with barely space for breath. Then her two sisters enter, and finally Katie comes up for air, if only for a moment, so that Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) can have her turn depriving the room of oxygen.

The first thing you’ll likely notice about His Three Daughters is the way the characters talk. Framed against a white wall in her father’s (Jay O. Sanders) Lower East Side apartment, an arms-crossed Katie (Carrie Coon) insists that she and her sisters set any differences aside, even as she begins to grumble about the “do not resuscitate” order that Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) didn’t get signed. It’s a capital-m monologue that Coon delivers in a breathless and stilted cadence, leaving no room for Rachel to speak. By the time Christina (Elizabeth Olsen), the youngest of the sisters, hunkers down at the dinner table for her turn in the spotlight, you may be excused for thinking you’re watching a theater group putting their spin on a relay race.

For her latest role, Natasha Lyonne had to change how she personally processed grief.
The Golden Globe nominee recalled the questions she asked herself while playing Rachel in the upcoming Netflix drama His Three Daughters, a role created for her by writer-director Azazel Jacobs.
“We found these new, untapped depths, like a reservoir,” she explained to CBS News. “For me, the question became, why? Why am I always smoking and shutting it down and trying to self-destruct it away? What is that feeling underneath the feeling that I’m running from? And really being allowed to sit in that grief in a way was a whole new idea.”
Lyonne continued, “Grief is a crazy concept. It’s something that we don’t talk about enough. … Because it’s happening every moment. We’re grieving what happened eight minutes ago, two minutes ago. You’re in a constant state of grief.

Netflix has released a trailer for the upcoming heartfelt feature ‘His Three Daughters.’
The movie is a bittersweet and often funny story of an elderly patriarch and the three grown daughters who come to be with him in his final days.
Katie (Carrie Coon) is a controlling Brooklyn mother dealing with a wayward teenage daughter; free-spirited Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is a different kind of mom, separated from her offspring for the first time; and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) is a sports-betting stoner who has never left her father’s apartment — much to the chagrin of her half-sisters, who share a different mother and worldview. Continuing his astute exploration of family dynamics in close-knit spaces, Jacobs follows the siblings for three volatile days, as death looms, grievances erupt, and love seeps through the cracks of a fractured home.

Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne And Carrie Coon Grieve Together In His Three Daughters Movie Trailer
It's often said that there's no right or wrong way to grieve the loss of a loved one. And in His Three Daughters, the latest film from French Exit director and mumblecore maestro Azazel Jacobs — which premiered to rave reviews at TIFF last year — we'll get to see three diverging approaches to loss as Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne, and Carrie Coon's estranged sisters Christina, Rachel, and Katie reunite to care for their dying father (Jay O. Sanders). If the first trailer for the already-in-the-Oscars-conversation Netflix film is anything to go by, Jacobs has an emotional wringer and we're about to be put through it and then some. Give it a watch below:
With Olsen and Coon having had their fill of blockbusters in recent years across MCU movies and the latest Ghostbusters reboot respectively, and Lyonne having left her indie beginnings for bigger roles in the likes of Poker Face and Russian Doll too,...

Everyone copes with loss differently. And the trailer for “His Three Daughters” released by Netflix Wednesday shows just that, capturing tragic but heartwarming moments as an estranged trio of sisters reunites to prepare for their father’s death. Together, they reconnect in their grief.
Natasha Lyonne plays Rachel, Carrie Coon plays Katie and Elizabeth Olsen plays Christina, the film’s half-sisters who are getting ready for the death of their father. You can feel the tension, resentment and buried love between the three throughout the entire two-and-a-half-minute spot.

Three months ago, members of the climate activist group Extinction Rebellion made national headlines when they interrupted the Broadway staging of Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People to bring attention to the environmental movement.
Now, they’re getting an Enemy of their own, with a cast of actors including Bill Murray, Taylor Schilling, Kathryn Erbe and Zach Grenier as well as Nate Smith, one of the activists who interrupted the Jeremy Strong-Michael Imperioli Broadway staging on March 14.

Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics unveiled nominations for their 2nd annual Dorian Theater Awards on Monday, March 13. Galeca’s 39-member theater wing decided this season’s crop of nominees, which honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway.
The nominations list is dominated by the current revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” and new play “Stereophonic.” Both productions netted six nominations a piece. In the case of “Merrily,” that tally includes bids for its Tony-nominated trio of stars: Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. “Stereophonic” managed one better with four members of its cast nominated in the same featured performance category: Will Brill, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, and Sarah Pidgeon. The individual acting races at the Dorian Awards are gender neutral.
The Best Broadway Musical category features Tony Award nominees “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “The Outsiders,” and “Suffs,” along with the closed David Byrne tuner “Here Lies Love” and soon-to-be closing “Lempicka.

David Adjmi’s Stereophonic was named Best Play of the year by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle today, with the Best Musical Award going to the Off Broadway production of Dead Outlaw from the team behind The Band’s Visit.
Stereophonic, currently on Broadway, has received 13 Tony Award nominations, and includes songs written by Will Butler from the indie rock band Arcade Fire. The play tells the story of a fractious 1970s Fleetwood Mac-like rock band recording what will be a massive Rumours-like hit record.
Dead Outlaw, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna and a book by Itamar Moses, is inspired by the life of Elmer McCurdy. The musical, which premiered this year at the Minetta Lane Theatre, was originally conceived by Yazbek and tells the story of an outlaw from the early 20th Century whose corpse became a traveling sideshow exhibit for decades.

With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.
The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

Ossie Davis’ play Purlie Victorious premiered on Broadway as a drama in 1961 when the vestiges of America’s Jim Crow caste system were still alive and well in the South. Even with 60-plus years of distance, it’s hard to believe how resonant the play is today with the hilarious Broadway revival that premiered last week at the Music Box Theatre.
Leslie Odom Jr. stars in the title role as a smooth-talking Georgia preacher trying to get a $500 inheritance left by his Aunt Henrietta from Ol’ Cap’n (Jay O. Sanders). Purlie comes up with a crackpot scheme to hire Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins (Kara Young) to pose as Henrietta’s daughter, Cousin Bee, to get the money from Ol’ Cap’n. Purlie wants the funds to buy Big Bethel church, where his dad once preached. High jinx ensue – but amid all the slapstick comedy, a much more profound story...

“Segregation is a ridiculous institution and it makes decent people do ridiculous things,” playwright, actor-director, and activist Ossie Davis told the New York Times on September 24, 1961, four days before his play Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch opened on Broadway, co-starring himself and his wife, Ruby Dee. “Maybe if they can be made to laugh at it they can see how absurd it is.”
Especially on a Great White Way where actors played predominantly to white audiences that had seen few comedies by Black playwrights, let alone satires on segregation, Purlie Victorious must have been a jolting event. Though the play, which ran for nearly eight months on Broadway, begat a film adaptation in 1963 (Gone Are the Days!) and the successful musical Purlie in 1970, Davis’s comedy about an aggrieved “self-made minister” righteously “disembezzling” a racist plantation owner has largely faded from popular memory.

Writer-director Azazel Jacobs has made a couple of indie pictures I really loved. French Exit gave Michelle Pfeiffer one of her meatiest roles in years and she ran with it in a delicious Paris-set tale. He also provided Debra Winger and Tracy Letts with terrific roles in the sophisticated The Lovers. And now Jacobs shows once again he knows how to attract top actors with well-written characters in the intimate drama His Three Daughters, which stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne.
The trio play sisters gathering in the New York City apartment where their father (Jay O. Sanders) is down the hall (unseen for most of the film) and near death. Jacobs purposely wants the confined atmosphere to let the dialogue rise to the top. They have arrived to spend his final days with him, but also to renew their own dysfunctional dynamic. Three sisters convene to say goodbye to their dying father in a detailed and intimate yet uneven drama
For better and for worse, the pandemic begat a certain micro-genre of intimate drama, one defined by its smallness – tight cast, single location, no extras, minimal costumes. His Three Daughters, the latest from the film-maker Azazel Jacobs, feels like a Covid movie. The action is confined to one Manhattan apartment, to which three sisters, played by Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen, return to settle the affairs of their dying father (Jay O Sanders) and say goodbye. The sisters almost entirely pick at the film’s knot of grief, resentment, relief and tricky love; their relationships are, for reasons that trickle out over several days, fraught and frosty. The ensemble players include two hospice nurses, one sister’s hookup and a neighbor.
Not that this is a bad thing; death, especially...

Katie (Carrie Coon) cannot believe no one got her father’s Do Not Resuscitate order signed before he slipped into unconsciousness. Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is rifling through her old boxes to find a comforting Grateful Dead concert tee. Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) has way too many bets going and way too much pot to smoke to pay too much attention to whatever the hell her sisters-in-name-only have going on. A few steps away, down a short hallway and behind a thin door, lies their father (Jay O. This is a relationship film of mother to son/social worker to surrogate son, all through Evelyn, in another stellar performance by Julianne Moore. Her actual son is Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard) a somewhat lost soul who spends his hours live streaming his original music to a growing international fan base. Her surrogate son is Kyle (Billy Brick), a 17-year-old who has checked into the domestic abuse halfway house with his mother, where Evelyn is director. As Evelyn drifts from Ziggy, she latches too close onto Kyle, and the result becomes a messy relationship for each boy. Meanwhile, of course, all the other relationships in their lives swirl around them.

So, I’m thinking that there may be a bit of a hidden strategy concerning a couple of this week’s big movie releases. Nothing nefarious mind you, perhaps more of a coincidence. Basically, we’ve got two tales of conflict between a parent and a son. Yes, the other film is the somber, emotional drama The Son. This other work, on the “flip side” also has lots of verbal clashes, but it’s peppered with lots of humor, often at the expense of the divisive duo. Plus it takes a few well-deserved shots, more like “burns’ at our social media-obsessed society. This is a touch ironic since it’s written and directed by the actor who was Oscar-nominated for his performance in an epic docudrama set on the fringes of the worldwide web. Now we’ve given a heads-up to the script’s snarky tone by the title. Can...

This review originally January 20, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
Jesse Eisenberg is no stranger to embodying a certain kind of awkwardness and unsociability in front of a camera, and he sticks to what he knows with his feature directorial debut, “When You Finish Saving the World.” The indie drama from A24, which premiered on the opening night of the virtual 2022 Sundance Film Festival on Thursday, is a veritable symphony in awkward conversations; if you’re not cringing half the time, you’re not paying attention.

Jesse Eisenberg is exactly how you might expect. He’s anxious, speaking quickly with his hands, a slight tremble in his voice from a clear nervousness. In fact, he’s similar to many of the characters he has played over the last 15 years. Eisenberg has repeatedly stated his difficulty in the public eye, his aversion to being famous, which becomes more obvious within minutes of sitting across from him.

Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) stepped behind the camera to make his feature film directorial debut with When You Finish Saving The World. The official trailer for the dramedy finds Oscar winner Julianne Moore (Still Alice) attempting to connect with her teen son who’s a burgeoning social media star, played by Stranger Things‘ Finn Wolfhard.
The cast also includes 13 Reasons Why‘s Alisha Boe and Blindspot‘s Jay O. Sanders.

The trailer for “When You Finish Saving the World,” the new A24 film written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, has arrived.
“The Social Network” star’s directorial debut revolves around the rocky relationship between Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard of “Stranger Things” fame), a teenager looking to launch his music career on the internet, and his mother Evelyn (Julianne Moore). The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year and is due to hit theaters on Jan. 20, 2023.
At the top of the video, Ziggy asks for a ride to school, saying he’ll be ready in five seconds. An impatient Evelyn counts to five before walking out the door. Beyond the typical trials and tribulations of parenting, Evelyn fails to understand her son’s budding music career online, where he has a decent-sized following.

Though he's perhaps best known for his turn as Mark Zuckerberg in the 2010 drama "The Social Network," Jesse Eisenberg is an even more astute writer than he is an actor. His debut feature film, "When You Finish Saving The World," is forthcoming from everyone's favorite studio and we finally have the very first trailer for the project.
In the footage for the comedy, we meet Evelyn (played by Julianne Moore) and her eccentric son, Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard), who couldn't be more at odds in their day-to-day lives. It looks as though Ziggy's mother meets someone she feels she can help, while Evelyn's son makes strides to connect with a girl at school — and naturally, these two shake-ups bring out the problems at the core of their bond.
A24 gave an official synopsis of the film:
Evelyn has devoted herself to helping people in hard times, but she struggles to connect with her son Ziggy,...

"Ziggy, are you happy?" A24 has revealed an official trailer for Jesse Eisenberg's feature directorial debut called When You Finish Saving The World, which first premiered 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It is being released by A24 in theaters in exactly a year from its initial premiere, in January 2023 starting out in art house cinemas. Evelyn and her oblivious son Ziggy seek out replacements for each other as Evelyn desperately tries to parent an unassuming teenager at her shelter, while Ziggy fumbles through his pursuit of a brilliant young woman at school. Starring Academy-Award winner Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard, with Billy Bryk, Alisha Boe, Jack Justice, Jay O. Sanders, Eleonore Hendricks, and Catherine Haun. Featuring original music by Emile Mosseri, Finn Wolfhard, and Jesse Eisenberg. I first saw this at Sundance (read our review) and it's good, but not a knock out. There is some smart commentary...
