The latest phenomenon of sporting stars granting intimate access to documentary makers in exchange for positive coverage – The Last Dance and Drive to Survive on Netflix, Welcome to Wrexham on Prime Video – has found plenty of fans on the streaming platforms, but others are raising their eyebrows at what they claim is a cynically manipulated narrative to make the star look only good.
The UK’s Sunday Times has focused its investigative lens on the recent four-hour Netflix documentary series Beckham, recounting the rollercoaster career of footballing superstar David Beckham, and found six examples of what it claims is a case of re-writing history to make sure Beckham’s halo remains intact.
They include:
World Cup match 1998 – In the doc, after Beckham is given a red card and sent off the pitch for fouling an Argentine player, the story goes that he suffered hostility even from his own Man Utd...

The Masked Singer is back, with fans tuning in every Saturday night to try to guess which celebrity is behind each costume.
Comedian Joel Dommett has returned to host proceedings, with 13 mystery stars singing familiar songs on stage, while dressed up in an outfit obscuring their identity.
Guessing along with the in-studio audience and the viewers at home are the judges: Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.
One way to help narrow things down is checking out who’s been on the series before – as it seems unlikely they’d return to the show (although not impossible).
So here’s a full list of who appeared on seasons one, two, three and four…
Season one
Winner: Nicola Roberts – Queen Bee
Jason Manford – Hedgehog
Katherine Jenkins – Octopus
CeeLo Green – Monster

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2022, broadcast live and exclusively on ITV and Stv last week from the London Stadium, has raised a record-breaking £15,673,728 so far for Unicef’s vital work giving children around the world the care-free, play filled childhoods they are entitled to.
This record-breaking amount was raised thanks to the generous support of the UK public, ITV and Stv viewers, and The Power of Nutrition who have matched donations up to £4 million, meaning double the difference for children. This figure has smashed last year’s record total for money raised on the night.
The hotly anticipated match took place at the sold-out London Stadium with 54,410 fans in attendance, 10 years on from the London 2012 Summer Olympics. The match ended 4-1 on penalties to Soccer Aid World XI, taking them into the overall lead with 6-5 wins since the inaugural 2006 match. Tottenham Hotspur are something of an enigma in the English game. Renowned for playing attractive football, there always seems to be a flaw holding them back from going on to achieve bigger and better things.
Since the inception of the Premier League, Spurs have flirted with relegation, been mired in mid-table mediocrity and have, at times, excelled while never really troubling the top teams.
They have never really been helped by numerous changes in management, which has seen the likes of Ossie Ardiles, Gerry Francis, Christian Gross, George Graham, Jacques Santini, Martin Jol, Harry Redknapp and many more waltz through and then slouch out of the seemingly ever revolving manager’s door at the Lane.
Some truly wonderful players have entertained the White Hart Lane faithful. Jurgen Klinsmann, Teddy Sheringham, David Ginola and Luka Modric are just a selection of the fantastic players Spurs have had within their ranks.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club are a club who are known for their attacking prowess and for scoring goals (they certainly aren’t known for being a tight-knit defensive unit).
Over the years, they club have had some wonderful attacking players – Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Smith, Martin Shivers, Gary Lineker, Teddy Sheringham, David Ginola and Gareth Bale to name but a few – and the Premier League years have been no different in that regard.
As a result, there have been some very memorable goals scored in that time – though not all of them have come from the attacking players who you’d necessarily expect them to come from.
Although many of Spurs’ most memorable goals in recent years are memorable specifically because of how good they were, several are memorable simply because of the circumstances in which they were scored; late equalisers, last minute winners,...

Are you simply nuts about football? Then you should be mates with micro-artist Quentin Devine.
Devine has painstakingly carved portraits of five England footy greats into Brazil nuts in time for this summer's 2014 World Cup in Rio. Why? Well, just because he can.
The artist went through over 50 nuts, each measuring 1.5 by 2cm, averaging 96 hours.
David Beckham, Gary Lineker, Wayne Rooney, Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer are given their own nutty equivalents. Though, Gary may only be interested in the crisp variety.
The nuts have been made to tie in with Dave's show England's Top 19 Footy Heroes, which kicks off its World Cup coverage tomorrow (May 20) at 9pm.
Devine said: "When Dave asked me to carve the faces of five of England's most loved football legends out of Brazil nuts I knew it would be a challenge. The nuts can be very oily and extremely brittle but I think I...

Tottenham Hotspur have had some fantastic players over the years; Dave Mackay, Graham Roberts, Jimmy Greaves, Pat Jennings, Ray Clemence, Ossie Ardiles, Glenn Hoddle, Ricky Villa, Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker, Teddy Sheringham and Ledley King to name a few.
But for every handful of superstars there has been the occasional complete flop – the kind of player whose signature has baffled fans from the get-go.
Young and upcoming stars who never lived up to their potential, exotic foreign imports who couldn’t hack it in the best league in the world and some outright stinkers who should never have been considered for purchase by any stretch of the imagination – Spurs have done it all when it comes to bad signings.
So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at 10 players who should never have worn the white shirt of Tottenham Hotspur…

SNL funnyman Will Ferrell and devilish celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay were put through the ringer Sunday at Unicef’s celebrity soccer game in Manchester, England. Although the two stars gave it their all, they hobbled away from the match with battle wounds, scars and for Ramsay, a trip to the hospital. Ouch!
Ferrell, who played with the Rest of the World squad, was forced to leave the match after sustaining a leg injury. The 44-year-old actor was reported to be in a lot of pain toward the end of the game, and was seen limping off the field.
Ramsay, 45, didn’t fare much better. The Hell’s Kitchen star was taken off the field in a stretcher and was given oxygen after colliding with professional soccer player Teddy Sheringham. It’s never a good idea to mix amateurs with professionals!

Many celebrities took part in an all-star Soccer Aid match benefiting Unicef on Sunday, but what was supposed to be a fun game, turned out to be very painful for Will Ferrell and Gordon Ramsay ("Hell's Kitchen"). The game was played by the English team (Robbie Williams, Mark Owen, Aston Merrygold, Olly Murs and Marvin Humes) against the Rest of the World team (Ramsay, Ferrell, Mike Myers, Gerard Butler, Edward Norton, James McAvoy, Woody Harrelson and Michael Sheen). During the match, former professional player Teddy Sheringham tackled Ramsey, hurting him so badly that the chef had to be lifted off the field in a stretcher. As for Ferrell, he limped off the field in the second half after hurting his leg. Both Ramsey and Ferrell are now doing fine. In the end, the English team won 3-1 and Unicef received $12.8 million.

Soccer Ace Insists He Mistimed Gordon Ramsay Tackle
Former England soccer star Teddy Sheringham is adamant he did not intend to injure celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay during a charity match on Sunday, insisting he mistimed his challenge.
Hell's Kitchen star Ramsay was given oxygen on the pitch and was taken to hospital with an agonising back injury after Sheringham clattered him from behind during the star-studded Soccer Aid event in Manchester, England.
Sheringham's full-blooded tackle attracted a swathe of abusive messages on Twitter.com, and the ex-sportsman took to his own page on the microblogging website on Monday to explain the incident.
He writes, "Never set out to hurt rammer (Ramsay) but football is (a) contact sport these things happen. Just got my timing wrong! Am in my mid 40s you know!"
The biennial event, in which international celebrities including Will Ferrell, Mike Myers and Edward Norton took on a team of British stars in a challenge match, raised more than $6.4 million (£4 million) for Unicef.

Gordon Ramsay 'Fine' After Soccer Aid Injury
Gordon Ramsay has assured fans he's "fine" after he was treated in hospital for an agonising back injury he picked up during Soccer Aid 2012 in England on Sunday.
The celebrity chef was taking part in the star-studded charity game in Manchester when he was tackled to the ground by former England international Teddy Sheringham.
Medics rushed on to the field to deliver oxygen to the stricken star before taking Ramsay away on a stretcher and transporting him to a nearby hospital. He was discharged in the early hours of Monday.
A representative for the Hell's Kitchen star says, "Gordon was taken to hospital after injuring his back during the game. He was released after receiving treatment and although he's in pain today, there shouldn't be any long term damage. He would like to thank the medical team at the ground and the hospital for the excellent care he received."
Ramsay also took to his Twitter.com page on Monday to give an update on his condition, writing, "Thx 4 (thanks for) all the messages. Out of hospital after receiving amazing care from medics at ground & hospital. Bit sore but fine."

Will Ferrell And Gordon Ramsay Injured In Charity Soccer Match
Funnyman Will Ferrell and chef Gordon Ramsay were left injured as England beat the Rest of the World 3-1 in celebrity sporting event Soccer Aid on Sunday.
Hell's Kitchen star Ramsay was given oxygen on the pitch and was stretchered from the field of play after he was clattered from behind by former England international Teddy Sheringham in the charity game.
And Anchorman star Ferrell hobbled out of the match when he suffered a leg injury late in the second half.
Kasabian rocker Serge Pizzorno opened the scoring for the Rest of the World team with a sensational chip over former England goalkeeper David Seaman, but the England side fought back in the second half with goals from Sheringham, captain Jonathan Wilkes and soccer ace Kevin Phillips to win the game 3-1.
Stars including Mike Myers, Gerard Butler, Edward Norton, Woody Harrelson and Michael Sheen went up against an England side which included Take That's Mark Owen and Jls singers Aston Merrygold and Marvin Humes in the biennial match, held in Manchester, England.
The event, organised by Owen's fellow Take That star Robbie Williams, raised more than $6.4 million (£4 million) for Unicef.
Pizzorno was awarded the honour of Man of the Match for his stunning goal.
