Mark Damon, who starred in the Vincent Price horror classic House of Usher and spaghetti Westerns before revolutionizing the foreign sales and distribution film business and producing features including 9 1/2 Weeks, Monster and Lone Survivor, has died. He was 91.
Damon died Sunday of natural causes in Los Angeles, his daughter, Alexis Damon Ribaut, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Damon spent the first 20 years of his career as an actor, including about a dozen as a leading man in Italian action movies, before he transitioned to the business side.
He had early success as an executive producer with two movies written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen: the German-language World War II drama Das Boot (1981), which received six Oscar nominations, and The NeverEnding Story (1984), a big-budget fantasy film that featured a Damon-commissioned score by Giorgio Moroder for non-German audiences.

For one full decade of 1977 to 1987, ABC could count on its comedy/drama series “The Love Boat” to bring in millions of audience members on Saturday nights. The show would have multiple story arcs (often three for a one-hour episode) with five to 10 celebrity guest stars each time. Some arcs were playing out for laughs, others for romance and the remainder could take on tough issues. The show airs daily on the Decades network and on Sunday afternoons for Me-tv. SAG-AFTRA kicked off its National Convention 2023 this week under the banner “Future Forward Union Power,” and they closed up shop pretty quickly in the same vein.
Just over after the gathering began, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher hit the pause button as it was announced Saturday afternoon that shuttered negotiations with the studios and streamers would re-start on Oct. 24. “While it’s disappointing to have to adjourn the convention early, the Negotiating Committee must immediately get back to the hard work of preparing to secure a fair contract,” Drescher said.
Initially set to run from Oct. 20 – 24, the 2023 convention will start up again once new dates are decided upon by the Guild’s National Board. SAG-AFTRA has been on strike 100 days as of today, with the first set of renewed talks running from Oct. 2 – 11 before the AMPTP walked away and “suspended” deliberations.

SAG-AFTRA has bought an office building in the San Fernando Valley for $46.6 million that will serve as its new national headquarters. Located at 12020 Chandler Blvd. in North Hollywood, the property features more than 118,000 square feet of commercial office space and includes the building on 1.22 acres and a nearby 0.71-acre vacant lot.
Up until now, SAG-AFTRA has been the only major Hollywood union that didn’t own its own headquarters. The old Screen Actors Guild – and now SAG-AFTRA – hadn’t owned their own national offices for 37 years and have been leasing at two different locations since 1986.
SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher said that “As National President, I began to investigate ways to diversify our investment portfolio and was surprised to learn we were the only entertainment industry union to not own our own headquarters versus paying large rents. SAG-AFTRA is beginning the wages and working conditions process today to help determine its bargaining positions for its upcoming film and TV contract negotiations.
The union’s current TV/Theatrical contracts with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers expire June 30. The union has said that the contract talks are set to begin in the spring and that “wage rate increases and the streaming residuals structure” will be among the issues to be bargained.
SAG-AFTRA has not struck the film and TV industry since it was formed 10 years ago with the merger of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists. SAG and AFTRA last struck the film and TV industry over 40 years ago, back in 1980. That strike, over contract terms for pay television and videocassettes, lasted 95 days.

As Deadline broke Monday, Beyoncé has now been officially confirmed to sing in one of the slots of Best Original Song contenders on the 94th Oscars on Sunday. As noted in the Deadline article, speculation is her performance of the nominated song (co-written with Dixson) called “Be Alive” from King Richard will take place via satellite from a Compton tennis court. That aspect, however, was not in the Academy’s long-awaited announcement today of plans for the Best Song presentations on the ABC Oscarcast.
As my colleague Mike Fleming noted, the formal announcement would come after voting closed Tuesday, and indeed it did — exactly at 5 p.m. Pt, which is the same moment ballots had to be in to PricewaterhouseCoopers. The campaign is over. All that is left now is the show itself.

Fran Drescher has been elected president of SAG-AFTRA, in a narrow victory for the faction that has led the union for a dozen years.
Drescher defeated Matthew Modine, who ran on the rival Membership First slate, by a tally of 52.5% to 47.5%.
Meanwhile, Joely Fisher — who was Modine’s running mate on the Membership First slate — won the race for secretary-treasurer, defeating Drescher’s running mate, Anthony Rapp, by a margin of 57.7% to 42.3%.
Drescher will succeed Gabrielle Carteris, who has led the organization since 2016. Best known for her lead role on “The Nanny,” Drescher led the Unite for Strength slate, which has controlled the union since 2009 and is seen as the more moderate of the two factions that dominate the union’s internal politics.
In a campaign video, Drescher said she would bring “positivity and optimism” to her role as union president.

Updated with vote count and winners’ quotes: Fran Drescher has been elected president of SAG-AFTRA and, in a split decision, her opponent’s running mate, Joely Fisher, has been elected national secretary-treasurer. Drescher defeated Matthew Modine, who was making his second bid for the presidency, but her running mate, Anthony Rapp, lost to Fisher.
In a close race, Drescher defeated Modine 16,958 votes to 15,371, while Fisher beat Rapp 18,547 to 13,593. A total of 122,154 ballots were mailed and 32,362 were returned (26.49%). Turnout this year was considerably higher than two years ago, when only 21.2% of the members voted.
Fisher, the daughter of former SAG secretary-treasurer Connie Stevens, amassed nearly 1,600 more votes than Drescher.

My love of horror films dates back forty years. In the fall of 1986, I accidentally stumbled across an aficionado’s bonanza – a local video store had hundreds of video posters in the cabinets underneath the movies it was renting. One of the posters was for Mortuary (1983), a horror film from the Vestron Video label that I knew of from another video store but had not seen. I liked the poster art but knew nothing of the film. To my recollection, it never played at area theaters, not even the 2-screen indoor/drive-in three miles from me that showed just about anything that was low-budget and esoteric.
Mortuary opened on Friday, September 2, 1983 in Los Angeles and is not a great movie, but it is not terrible, either. It does, however, move at a snail’s pace, so be forewarned if you have not seen it.

Matthew Modine is running for president of SAG-AFTRA again as the leader of Membership First, the union’s opposition party. Joely Fisher, a former national board member, is running for secretary treasurer as his running mate.
Modine was defeated for the presidency by Gabrielle Carteris in a highly contentious election in 2019. In that race, Carteris received 13,537 votes to Modine’s 10,683, with a third candidate, former SAG-AFTRA secretary-treasurer Jane Austin, receiving 5,048 votes. Imagine shock-meister William Castle directing a Disney movie and the result might be something like Two on a Guillotine. William Conrad, narrator of Rocky and Bullwinkle and star of television’s Cannon, is at the wheel of this thrill ride and he’s happy to rehash a few of Castle’s favorite scare tactics for his own purposes – the moans and groans of a carnival spook house and even a wire-drawn skeleton. There’s no denying Conrad’s effort has some of the Saturday matinee charm of creep shows like House on Haunted Hill but the sunny locales and aggressively perky demeanor of co-stars Connie Stevens and Dean Jones make you wish Frederick Loren would drop by with a well-aimed champagne cork.

Thanks to the critical and box office success of writer/director Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood", actor Brad Pitt aka movie stunt double, bodyguard 'Cliff Booth' in the new film, is open to reprising his character for an extended episode, 'streaming mini-series', featuring new content and character backstories as a complement to the film:
"...I look at a mini-series where you can spend much more time on characters and story and explore angles you don't always get to do in films", said Pitt.
"So much of these films end up on the cutting room floor because they just don't fit in that box.
"That's why I think it's interesting that Tarantino previously took 'Hateful Eight' and ostensibly repurposed it as a three-part series. It's almost the best of both worlds.
"You have the cinema experience that exists, but you can actually put more content into the series format.

In his latest film, Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino ushers audiences into the sights and sounds of 1960s Los Angeles. Complete with a mesmerizing recreation of Hollywood Boulevard, the director places his fictional characters, a struggling TV actor and his stunt double, alongside real entertainers from the time.
At the forefront is Sharon Tate, the ill-fated victim of the Manson Family, played here by Margot Robbie. But revolving in her circle are also her husband, Roman Polanski, and friends Steve McQueen, Connie Stevens and most controversially, Bruce Lee.
Before the Pulp Fiction director’s ninth film hit theaters this July, Lee’s daughter Shannon voiced her displeasure in Tarantino including her father in the movie without first reaching out to her. Hollywood Vampires: The Birth of Midnight Movies on L.A.'s Sunset Strip is a three-part series of essays by Tim Concannon.Once Upon A Time On The Sunset STRIP1969 on the Sunset Strip was a period of dislocation, dissipation and dissolution from which the Hollywood of the Seventies emerged. A movie theatre adjoining Santa Monica Boulevard, where the Underground Cinema 12 film festival held sold-out midnight shows attended by thousands of Freaks, is an overlooked catalyst of L.A.'s underground scene, alongside Pandora's Box, the club recreated in Riot On the Sunset Strip (1967) and which was the focus of the November 1966 Sunset Strip disturbances.Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time...in Hollywood—which is woven around the Manson family murders in 1969, though it isn't focused on them—is situated in the same unsettling hinterland between film stardom and savage violence that Peter Bogdanovich's Targets touches on as well.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has confirmed that Black Panther‘s Best Song Oscar nominee “All the Stars” from Kendrick Lamar, Sounwave, Anthony Triffith and Sza will not be performed at Sunday’s ceremony.
Note this absolutely has nothing to do with the running time of the telecast. Since the nominations were announced, there had been ongoing discussions between Lamar’s camp and the Oscar creatives to try and make this performance possible. Lamar, from what we’ve heard from sources outside AMPAS, has been abroad and the closing four-week schedule post-noms was a challenge to turn around a stage performance that would do justice to “All the Stars.”
Lamar, who has performed at three of the past four Grammys, reportedly also was unable to perform at this month’s show due to work abroad. “All the Stars” was Grammy-nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year,...

Scott Wilson, an acting veteran of half a century who was a high-profile member “The Walking Dead” cast, was remembered warmly at memorial ceremonies Saturday at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
Wilson died at the age of 76 after a battle with leukemia on Oct. 6. The premiere episode of the ninth season of “The Walking Dead” aired the next day and was dedicated to Wilson’s memory.
“The Walking Dead” cast members Danai Gurira, Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies and Greg Nicotero spoke at Saturday’s event along with director Ernest Dickerson. Gurira recalled in her speech that Wilson went out of his way to make her feel comfortable on her first day when she joined the cast of “The Walking Dead” in its third season.

Director Quentin Tarantino continues to build his cast for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Damon Herriman (Justified) has been cast in the role of Charles Manson in the film and Rafal Zawierucha will play director Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate’s husband. Meanwhile, Danny Strong, Sydney Sweeney, Rumer Willis, Dreama Walker, Margaret Qualley, Costa Ronin, Victoria Pedretti and Madisen Beaty have been cast in the film as well. I can’t believe how massive this cast list is getting. I’m pretty sure that next week we’ll get a notice saying that everyone is in the film.
According to The Wrap, Rumer Willis will play British actress Joanna Pettet; "Walker plays actress and singer Connie Stevens and Ronin (The Americans) portrays Polish actor Voytek Frykowski, who was one of the victims of the Manson Family’s murder spree at Roman Polanski’s home on Cielo Drive." Qualley will take...

The search for Quentin Tarantino’s Charles Manson is over. The Wrap confirms the director has cast Australian actor Damon Herriman as the infamous serial killer in his ninth feature, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The casting news arrives as Tarantino is already well into production on the 1969-set movie, which is shaping up to be his penultimate effort if he sticks to his plan to retire after ten movies.
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a television actor trying to break into the film industry alongside his friends and stuntman, played by Brad Pitt. The characters live next door to Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski, played by Margot Robbie and Rafal Zawierucha. Tate and four others were murdered by members of the Manson Family cult on August 9, 1969.
Herriman is best known in the U.S. for playing Dewey Crowe on five seasons of the FX series “Justified.

Earlier today, Quentin Tarantino found his Roman Polanski in Rafal Zawierucha and now, the two-time Academy Award winner has finally filled the role we’ve all been waiting for: Charles Manson. According to Cinema Blend (H/T The Wrap), Damon Herriman, star of Justified and Incorporated, has landed the part of the infamous serial killer in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Currently, the extent of Herriman’s role is unknown, but, seeing as a majority of his work has taken place on the small screen, this will undoubtedly be the most significant production of which he’s ever been apart. Joining Herriman on the non-fiction side of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is Rumer Willis (Joanna Pettet), Dreama Walker (Connie Stevens) and Costa Ronin (Voytek Frykowski). Margaret Qualley (The Nice Guys), Madisen Beaty (The Fosters) and Victoria Pedretti have also come aboard.

John McCain, who went from Vietnam War hero to become “the Maverick of the Senate,” died Saturday of brain cancer at his home in Phoenix at his home in Arizona. He was 81. He family had announced August 24 that he was discontinuing treatment for his aggresive glioblastoma.
The son and grandson of Navy admirals who have a warship named for them, McCain represented Arizona in the Senate more than 30 years. He was a decorated naval aviator who was shot down over North Vietnam in 1967 and spent 5½ years in captivity. He was offered an early release but refused, citing the military’s moral code. His father, John McCain Jr., was commander-in-chief of the Pacific Command during most of his imprisonment. The younger McCain’s experience as a Pow led him to be a leading voice against so-called “enhanced interrogation,” otherwise known as torture.

"You didn't tell me she's funny." RadioactiveGiant has debuted an official trailer for an indie film titled By the Rivers of Babylon, previously known as Caretaker, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Albert Sandoval. The description for this is a bit vague but sets up the plot of this psychological thriller: dementia and deceit haunt a widow as her estranged son and the new caretaker share her home. The dark drama stars Crispin Glover, Connie Stevens, Mark Boone Junior, Sam Quartin, Joely Fisher, Adam Tomei, and Dakota Buchanan. This looks unsettling, quite a few creepy things going on. Glover looks gnarly with that big burly mustache, but his accent is a bit hokey. Not sure what else I can say about this. Watch below. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Albert Sandoval's By the Rivers of Babylon, from YouTube: Dementia and deceit haunt a widow as her estranged son...
