Buddy Ebsen is probably best known for his role in The Beverly Hillbillies, but he was a seasoned actor who took on a wide array of roles for seven decades. In 1961, Ebsen guest starred in an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. Let’s take a look back at the episode and Ebsen’s role.

Ebsen guest starred in The Andy Griffith Show in Nov. 1961. He was 53 at the time. The actor played the role of David Browne, a drifter who floats through Mayberry looking for a few free meals. The episode was the sixth of the second season and directed by Bob Sweeney. The episode, titled “Opie’s Hobo Friend,” was written by Harvey Bullock, Sheldon Leonard, and Aaron Ruben.

In the last decade of his career, John Ford produced and directed this ode to crony politics, with Spencer Tracy as an old-fashioned mayor who uses underhanded ploys to do right by his constituents. Tracy is backed by a veritable army of supporting actors, neatly orchestrated in Frank Nugent’s screenplay. We’re talking scores of John Ford stock company players; it’s like old home week, with Ford in firm control.

This Blu is a fascinating hybrid of experimental film and historical documentary by Bill Morrison of Decasia fame. Lost film history and the vanished era of the Dawson Gold Rush blend into one story — all touched off by the discovery of tons of rare silent film, buried in the cold ground of the Canadian Yukon. And Donald Trump’s in there too! In the show, not the snow.

A happy discovery! This is a major late- silent-era gem on the order of Von Sternberg’s Docks of New York — a special treat that will please fans of director William Wellman — he revisited parts of it in a later talkie. It’s also a key movie in our education/adoration of the maverick actress Louise Brooks, the erotic sensation too hot and too independent for Hollywood.

It’s fitting that so much of Justified’s second-to-last episode “Collateral” takes place on a desolate, wooded mountain haunted by the ghosts of an old way of life, one that used to be driven by rural traditions and old-fashioned, digger-driven mining. The setting ties in with so much of the talk this season about old ways passing and newer, meaner ways supplanting them. As is so often the case on this series, the mountaintop also showcases Justified’s fondness for the crime film and the Western, genres that often end with violence committed at high altitudes (High Sierra and The Naked Spur came to mind here). It’s in these cold woods that Raylan and Boyd have an aborted showdown as Constable Bob Sweeney lies bleeding nearby from gunshot wounds inflicted by Boyd. Somewhere near this spot, Raylan and then Boyd confront Ava’s uncle Zachariah, who’s covering for his fugitive niece Ava.

Patton Oswalt is omnipresent. Or so it seems. The stand-up and actor reprised his fan-favorite role as Constable Bob Sweeney on this week’s penultimate episode of Justified, guest-starred as a Rob Ford–like mayor on Sunday’s Battle Creek, and starts a recurring role as the vice-president’s hands-on chief of staff on Veep on April 12. Plus, he narrates The Goldbergs and frequently can be found on Twitter, most recently causing a firestorm with a 53-tweet rebuttal of the criticism directed at controversial new Daily Show host Trevor Noah. Somehow, Oswalt found a few minutes in his packed schedule to talk about all these things with Vulture. (Warning: This Q&A contains spoilers for the April 7 episode of Justified, “Collateral.”) Why do you think Constable Bob has become such a beloved character?Bob represents what us mortals would be like in the world of Harlan County, against all these extreme badasses.

On tonight’s episode of Justified, Constable Bob Sweeney (Patton Oswalt) says of Ava Crowder (Joelle Carter): "That girl could make a dog break its chain." In the FX drama's current sixth season, she's got two men chasing their proverbial tails: Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), her ex-fiancé/partner in crime, and Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), another former flame, who sprang her from jail on the condition that she become his confidential informant to bring down Boyd. "They're not exactly fighting over her," Carter says. "It's more like they're pulling her apart. But a lady does love a little attention one way or another." The Georgia-born actress has been drawing praise for her powerful performance, not to mention her character's passionate kiss with Raylan in the latest episode. She spoke with Vulture about Ava’s next move and what lies ahead in the final season.When...

Patton Oswalt is a man of many talents: stand-up comedian, sitcom star, should-have-been Oscar nominee and Twitter god. There are plenty more impressive attributes attached to the former "King of Queens" regular, and 2013 saw many of them on full display. Oswalt appeared in virtually every television show on the air. In addition to his regular slots on Adult Swim's "The Heart She Holler," FX's new animated show "Axe Cop," and narrating every episode of ABC's "The Goldbergs," Oswalt stole episodes as a guest star in the likes of comedies "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," "Portlandia" and, quite memorably, "Parks and Recreation." Oswalt also held his own in the dramatic realm, continuing to prove the accolades he received for "Big Fan" and "Young Adult" were no flukes. He proudly co-starred in Ben Stiller's ambitious interpretation of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" as an overly involved service representative and made an impressive...

Washington — The inconveniences of the daily routine in the nation's capital will be a selling point as Washington, D.C., makes a push to host the 2024 Olympics.
"We are the safest and most secure city in the world," said Bob Sweeney, president of DC 2024. "The largest expense of any Olympic Games is security, and the fact that we've got it pretty built in to our everyday life here in Washington, we would leverage that asset tremendously to put on this high-profile event."
Sweeney announced Tuesday the formation of a nonprofit group aimed at making D.C. the first American city to host the Summer Games since Atlanta in 1996, and the first to host an Olympics since the Winter Games were held in Salt Lake City in 2002.
The bid has a long way to go. Washington was one of 35 U.S. cities to receive a letter from the U.S. Olympic Committee to gauge interest,...

Comedian Patton Oswalt is vying for two guest-acting Emmys this year. He did great work as a local gadfly who hijacks a city council meeting on NBC's "Parks and Recreation," and he probably has a decent shot of getting a nomination for his work there.
Yet as good as he was on that show -- and in the incredible eight-minute outtake that didn't make the final cut -- his work as a guest star on FX's "Justified" is even better.
Oswalt played Constable Bob Sweeney -- a local law-enforcement figure with so little actual power that he has to drive his own car, an AMC Gremlin -- in several episodes of Season 4. He was introduced as little more than comic relief, a gung-ho but ineffectual little guy who was watching Raylan's (Timothy Olyphant) dad's house and drawing wry smiles from the taciturn U.S. marshal -- when he wasn't just being annoying.

If television as a whole seemed a little obsessed with casting comedian Patton Oswalt last season — he appeared in no fewer than seven shows! — it’s because no one plays obsessives better. He was Justified’s eager-beaver volunteer constable Bob Sweeney. He was the competitive frenemy of Ashton Kutcher’s Walden on Two and a Half Men. He was a professional Evite replier on Portlandia. Even his wildly different roles on Parks and Recreation (a strict constructionist), Burn Notice (an ace smuggler), Bob’s Burgers (a food critic), and The Simpsons (a too-cool kid without a television set) can be measured by their degrees of mania. The funny thing is that Oswalt himself didn't realize he'd become TV's go-to obsessee. “I didn’t have an overall sense that I’d been everywhere until I got the e-mail from you guys saying I had,” he chuckles to Vulture. “Oh, lord — I’m turning into Michael Caine.

Justified is back!
And along with the white hat, dry humor and overall bad assery of Raylan Givens, that means our Justified Round Table team of Dan Forcella, Jim Garner, Carla Day and Nick McHatton is back as well.
Pull up a virtual chair and gather around below to read their take on "Hole in the Wall."
-------------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene from the opener?
Dan: Probably Raylan's first encounter with Jody. Throwing the bag of burgers in his face was classic Givens, and it just reminded me how awesome the next 12 weeks are going to be.
Jim: I have to agree with Dan, watching Raylan shoot the airbag of a car as a distraction method to prevent being shot and disarm Jody was classic!
Carla: When Colton shot the guy in the head after Boyd said, "Take care of him." In particular, I loved Boyd's shocked reaction. He isn't often taken by surprise.

As I wrote when putting it in my top 10 list of best shows from last year, Justified’s approach to storytelling is old hat at this point. The first half of every season is mostly made up of one-off, case of the week episodes that pepper in the overarching seasonal plot throughout. The back end then slowly shifts the balance, and by the last few episodes, Raylan Givens’ collision course with the heavies floating around the fringes of Harlan County comes into sharp focus. It’s a structure that a lot of basic cable dramas follow, placing the narrative requirements of each episode somewhere between the procedural comfort of network TV, and the meticulous, novelistic planning of HBO.

The new season of "Justified" brought with it just a hint of Mayberry. Patton Oswalt joined the cast as Constable Bob Sweeney, a bumbling sidekick for Raylan Givens. While he doesn't carry a single bullet for his gun the way Barney Fife did, Bob has a knife that he believes he can use to take people out -- so long as they come at him the right way.
When Raylan took on a bounty job on the side, he called in Bob to help him out. Things went south, as the always do, when he got pulled into a different case involving two teenage copper thieves and a bag pulled from the wall of his father's house. Everything culminated in a tense standoff that would have been over a lot sooner had Bob not asked one of the men to pull on him.

Spoiler Alert! FX’s Justified has returned, and with it, our weekly postmortems with showrunner Graham Yost, who’ll once again take us inside the writers room. He penned the season 4 premiere, “Hole in the Wall,” which introduced a season-long mystery somehow involving Arlo (Raymond J. Barry); Patton Oswalt’s recurring character, Constable Bob Sweeney, who proved a help to Raylan (Timothy Olyphant); and a snake-handling preacher (Joe Mazzello), who’s already hurting Boyd’s (Walton Goggins) revenue. Bonus: it also included a reference to Yost’s Speed screenplay (did you catch it?).

Praise Jebus! Justified launched its fourth season Tuesday night, and all you really need to know is that Harlan County has been invaded by a controversial new church that has everyone — the sober and the stoned — abuzz.
Already a thorn in budding drug dealer Boyd Crowder’s side, the place of worship — a tent in the woods called Last Chance Holiness — seemingly aims to help the weak (aka Oxycontin users) find God.

Over the past couple years Justified has been my favorite drama on television. With its riveting performances, exciting story lines and endless charm, the series has received equally high praise from critics across the country.
But if the Justified Season 4 premiere - "Hole in the Wall" - is any indication, this intense drama is likely to have a bit of a lighter feeling to it. There have always been comedic moments spread sporadically through Justified - usually from Raylan or Art - but with Patton Oswalt joining the fold, loads of comedy is likely to ensue.
As Constable Bob Sweeney, Oswalt perfectly portrays the wannabe tough guy with a level of comedic timing only attained by the heavily-seasoned actor. Even better, at least after just one hour, the introduction of his character is so seamless that the world that Justified has created over the last three seasons doesn't seem to skip a beat.

In past years, FX's crime drama "Justified," based on a character from a story by novelist Elmore Leonard, has featured a major opponent who spends a season's worth of episodes complicating the life of Stetson-wearing Kentucky-based U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant).
In Season 2, Margo Martindale earned critical acclaim for her portrayal of Mags Bennett, matriarch of a pot-growing crime family in rural Harlan, Raylan's hometown. Last year, demented crime boss Robert Quarles (Neal McDonough) brought violence and a dose of perversion to Harlan.
But when Season 4 launches on Tuesday, Jan. 8, things will be a little different.
"After Mags, and after Quarles," executive producer Graham Yost tells Zap2it, "we just didn't want to be a bad-guy-of-the-year show. We thought we could do something different for us, which is to make this season more of a mystery.

The producers of Justified like to, if nothing else, experiment with how their season-long storylines play out from season to season. In season 2, we had the long-running singular villain in the form of Mags. Last season, we had two villains -- though, arguably, only one turned out to actually try and kill Raylan -- and this season, we're not sure what we have. At the very least, it's a thirty-year old mystery that incorporates Raylan's father, Arlo.
In 1983, an unknown person parachuted to their death with what looked like bricks of cocaine. They were discovered by a man named Sherman and presumably his wife. Somehow, 30 years later, what we can assume Sherman stole from the dead person wound up inside the walls in Arlo's home that Raylan is now trying to sell.

Justified returns (FX, 10 p.m. Et) tonight, and unlike in year’s past, when the season-long arc was Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) chasing one formidable bad guy, season 4 revolves around one formidable mystery. The story behind that is something Raylan’s incarcerated father, Arlo (Raymond J. Justified fans will have to wait until early January for a new episode, but we’ve got your first look at Patton Oswalt, who makes his debut as Constable Bob Sweeney in the season 4 premiere, now. “It’s a guy that basically sorta wants to be Raylan Givens , but is not, which I think most men can relate to,” Oswalt tells EW. The former high school classmates reconnect when Raylan asks Bob to check in on Arlo’s house and make sure it doesn’t get trashed. Oswalt is tight-lipped about the character, who will return later in the season,...

Very, very few shows manage to excite me in quite the same way as Justified. This FX series has always been a high-class deliverer of great characters and fun stories. And with Season 4 set to premiere in early 2013 my expectations are rather high. Not that I think Justified would ever fail me, or anybody else for that matter. No, this series is too smartly written to deserve even the smallest drop of doubt. Even the casting of Patton Oswalt, which at first glance seems like a strange choice to make, is brimming with possibilities for what this show could do.
As reported by TVLine, Oswalt will be visiting Lexington as a local constable named Bob Sweeney. This recurring character went to high school with Raylan, who hires him to keep watch on Arlo’s house while he’s in prison. The character will manage to exude some of Oswalt’s funny sensibilities,...

Looks like comedian, actor and pontificator on the nature of geek culture Patton Oswalt is headed to Harlan County, Kentucky. TVLine reports that the "Nature Calls" star will have a recurring role in the new season of FX's acclaimed crime drama "Justified." He'll play Bob Sweeney, a local constable with whom Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) went to high school. Raylan hires Bob to watch his father Arlo's (Raymond J. Barry) house, and the promise of Oswalt being paired with the tough, sardonic Olyphant sounds like something to look forward to. With the fall TV season upon us, shows are either preparing for their mid-season or late-season arrivals, or adding guest stars to boost ratings. Two such guest stars are Patton Oswalt and Olivia Munn, both of whom will be appearing on the small screen this upcoming TV season. Oswalt is joining the fourth season of FX's crime drama "Justified," based on Elmore Leonard's U.S. Marshall character of Raylan Givens, which the author has used in several novels and a short story. Oswalt will reportedly recur as "local constable" Bob Sweeney, who went to high school with Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) and enjoys relating the same football story over and over again. Oswalt will be mostly watching over the house of Raylan's father, Arlo, but will also help to bring a bail jumper to justice. No word on how long Oswalt's run on "Justified" will be, but as production begins shortly in Santa Monica,...

Comedian Patton Oswalt will head to Harlan for a recurring part on Season 4 of "Justified."
Oswalt will play Bob Sweeney, a high school classmate of Raylan's (Timothy Olyphant) who's now a local constable, TVLine reports. Raylan hires him to look after Arlo's (Raymond J. Barry) house while the old man is incarcerated.
Oswalt has done his share of drama work in the past -- he starred in the rather disturbing movie "Big Fan" and has guested on "Caprica" and "Dollhouse" -- but Bob will have his comedic moments as well. He never tires of retelling his one great football story from high school, and he has a "go bag" at the ready in case doomsday strikes.
In the season premiere, he and Raylan team up to track down a fugitive.
Season 4 of "Justified" begins filming later this month and will be back on FX in early 2013. ...
