"You can't count it!" That's what producer Peter Safran said to Entertainment Weekly in 2023 about "The Curse of La Llorona" being part of The Conjuring Universe. Safran, who has helped to spearhead the very successful horror franchise alongside James Wan since 2013, did not leave any room for interpretation there. Yet, director Michael Chaves' successful 2019 feature directorial debut contains characters from "Conjuring" films, as well as overt references to events in those stories. Be that as it may, this movie now exists as both an unquestionable hit and a film that narratively exists in The Conjuring Universe but, for technical reasons, actually doesn't.
In the era of cinematic universes, it's an almost unprecedented situation. Why provide connective tissue if the plan isn't to connect these dots?...

More than a decade in the making, the film follows a groundbreaking clinical trial that peels back the headlines to show the sweat, passion and sacrifice behind every breakthrough cure. In 2011, Hepner and her husband Mossman heard about a radical stem cell treatment for diabetes, a disease that shockingly kills more than five million people each year. Driven by a desire to cure Lisa of her own type 1 diabetes, the filmmakers were given unprecedented access to a clinical trial—only the sixth ever stem cell trial in the world. What follows is an intimate journey with the patients and scientists who put themselves on the line to be first.
Hepner scripted the project and produced alongside Jonathan Formica (Lost & Found) and Kristin Lesko (O.J.: Made in America), with diabetes org Beyond Type 1 exec producing alongside Amy Rapp (The Woman Who Wasn’t There), Marla Oringer, Greer Wylder and Thom Scher. Exclusive: Deadline has an exclusive clip from the feature doc Since I Been Down, which is set for release on VOD on May 24th.
The film from director Gilda Sheppard stakes us to Tacoma, Washington. Influenced by the national drug war frenzy and the fear-based culture of punishment in the 1980s and ’90s, Tacoma sacrificed its most vulnerable children to a life behind bars. These children, who are now adults, cannot be silenced. As we hear them tell their stories, bravely, unapologetically, we realize: This is the story of ‘Everytown USA’.
June Nho Ivers, Saman Maydani and Bonnie Benjamin-Phariss produced the doc, with Sheppard and David Menschel serving as executive producers. Our exclusive clip from the film can be found below.

Hallie and Audrey McPherson will be bringing their dramedy Earthquake Country to Dances With Films on Saturday, June 18th at 7:15 p.m. Pst.
The film written and directed by The McPherson Sisters centers on Rhyme Osbourne (Lydian Blossom), who is fed up with her mother’s alcoholism and delusions of grandeur and her father’s literal inability to get off the couch. On her eighteenth birthday, Rhyme puts into motion a plan that will cut ties with her family—for good. Set in 2007 in the seemingly idyllic Ojai, CA, the film is a coming-of-age story that explores the creation of family mythology, the malleability of memory, and the sometimes suffocating intimacy of the nuclear family.
Deborah Marks-Bertling, Alex Sorian Brown, Todd Caroll, Nigel Vonas, Melina Emilie, Madison Widener and Kyle Hester also star. Pic was produced by the McPhersons and Melina Hayum.

Filmmaker Alex Proyas‘ production outfit Heretic Foundation and development company Mystery Clock Cinema this week announced a co-production/financing partnership with the UK-based 108 Media, which has launched worldwide sales and packaging on his latest feature, the horror Sister Darkness.
The female-driven film marking the first of several forthcoming collaborations between the parties is set in the UK in the 1930s—at a time when women were marginalized and exploited. It follows the newly-wed but unhappy Alice as she stumbles across her doppelgänger Isla, whose existence is a mystery seeped in a tale of bloody retribution against her oppressors, the hellish supernatural nightscape, and a dread uprising against the deceitful aristocracy. Pic will go before camera in Australia later this year.
Proyas negotiated his multi-faceted deal with 108 Media’s CEO Abhi Rastogi and President (Production) Justin Deimen, with support from Rod Smith and Steven Rosser (Legal Counsel), General Manager & Executive Producer Andrew Robinson, Studio Producer Erasmo (Raz) Raimundo, and Craig Emmanuel of Paul Hastings in Los Angeles.

More than a decade in the making, the film follows a groundbreaking clinical trial that peels back the headlines to show the sweat, passion and sacrifice behind every breakthrough cure.

With Destination Marfa now on DVD and digital services, I had the opportunity to catch up with producer and co-star Stelio Savante to learn about how he got involved with the film, his favorite on set memories, working with Tony Todd, and more!
How did you get involved with Destination Marfa as a producer and one of the film's co-stars?
The project kept coming across my radar where it no longer felt coincidental. Often these projects and roles serendipitously chase you. It literally felt like a case of pronoia to me. So I reached out to Andy, we had a solid initial conversation and he sent me the script. At that point the hitchhiker role (Vincent) was still up for being retold and it fell into place very naturally. As a producer, I wanted to help Andy’s vision become fully realized and I reached out and brought in a...

We speak with the filmmakers and actors who considered it their sacred duty to do honor by La Llorona... the very real ghost.
The story of La Llorna, the weeping woman, is well-known in Mexico. Details, such as the color of her dress or the exact date of her death, might change depending on geography and teller, but the basic folklore remains the same: There once was a woman who drowned her children in a fit of grief and jealousy. Afterward she committed suicide but was damned to wander the world looking for other children. Yours, perhaps, if they were disobedient. If so, they too would breathe water. Such is The Curse of La Llorona, and such is the context of the new horror movie that is set in the ever expanding The Conjuring universe.

New ghost, new family, same old rules and scares. A new ghastly member in “The Conjuring Universe” haunts theaters beginning this Friday, but despite the name and the occasional Spanish language, you’d be hard-pressed to find many distinguishing elements in The Curse Of La Llorona. In fact, one can argue that many of the scenes seem like unused material from horror master James Wan’s more successful films, just repackaged in a watered-down attempt at Mexican folklore. But hey – slap The Conjuring name on the poster and sprinkle in some screaming ghost faces, and you have a serviceable Friday night date flick for the high-school crowd.

Filmmaker James Wan says The Curse Of The Weeping Woman will hit one at the deepest levels of horror and touch upon some unknown fears. Wan was completely fixated with the folklore of the Weeping Woman, and that's the reason why he backed the horror thriller. The film will be released in India on April 19 by Warner Bros, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
"When I first came to America, one of the first stories that people would come up and tell me was the legend of La Llorona," producer Wan said in a statement.?
The film is an ode to one of the most widespread horror stories shared within the Hispanic community.
According to lore, the Weeping Woman or La Llorona is an apparition, caught between heaven and hell. She drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the river after them. And now she creeps in...

Actress Linda Cardellini, who plays the role of the mother who goes up against La Llorana in The Curse Of The Weeping Woman, says she couldn't resist the complex hero at the heart of the horror film. That's the reason she said yes to the project.?
"When I read the script, I loved that it was not about being someone's wife or being someone's sister. It's really about this woman who is fighting the odds to keep her family together, and the lengths she's willing to go to protect her children," Cardellini said in a statement.
"I loved that we experience this story through her eyes. And, to be honest, the idea of being in a full-on horror movie was also kind of exciting," she added.?

La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations.
In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain.
Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious … and her methods more terrifying.
In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children.
Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.

I’ve actually wondered if the upcoming James Wan-produced horror film The Curse of La Llorona was connected to The Conjuring universe. I figured that the movie would be its own thing, but it looks like I figured wrong.
The Curse of La Llorona premiered recently at SXSW, and it sounds like Tony Amendola’s Father Perez officially crosses over from The Conjuring universe. This character initially appeared in the first Conjuring spinoff film Annabelle.
Bloody Disgusting went ahead and confirmed that this is indeed the same character. They explain in their review how the character fits in:
But this is a Conjuring universe film through and through, which means there’s a familiarity to the scares and formula. It also means a tenuous and not so necessary connection between the films. Remember Father Perez (Tony Amendola) from Annabelle? If you don’t, that’s ok. This film works hard to remind you,...

The Curse of La Llorona isn’t Annabelle unwatchable, but it’s certainly no The Conjuring rebirth. Michael Chaves’ ritualistic Conjurverse spinoff lays standard haunted house blueprints but doesn’t execute plans with particular enthusiasm or distinct characteristics. “La Llorona” herself evokes such richness in Latin American darkness and fabled maternal horrors, but none of that translates in this blandly monotone pastiche of basic scares that Wan’s lens has before presented with more paranormal viciousness. Chaves executes from Curse A to Banishment B, just without the particularly descript terrorization that’s elevated horror cinema’s best efforts as of late.
Linda Cardellini stars as social worker Anna Tate-Garcia, a single mother who unwittingly introduces her children to an evil ghost after handling Patricia Alvarez’s (Patricia Velasquez) tragic case. “La Llorona” (Marisol Ramirez) hopes to steal Anna’s children and drown them, but the strong-willed widow won’t submit without a fight.

As a kid, I had heard whispers of “The Weeping Woman” from some of my friends, but I didn’t learn more about the mythology surrounding this haunting and tragic figure until several years ago when Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights created an immersive and terrifying maze centered around the supernatural child snatcher who has spent the eternity of her afterlife grieving for her children, who were drowned after she went mad. Considering it’s a story that has been around for hundreds of years now, becoming a cautionary tale that parents have used as a means to keep their kids in line, this folklore has been ripe for a cinematic interpretation for quite some time now, and director Michael Chaves does an excellent job of tapping into just why generations of tots have grown up haunted by the fear of being taken away by “La Llorona” if they don...
