The title Murder in a Small Town is, at once, perfectly descriptive and not at all. On one hand, the new Fox procedural is exactly what it says on the tin. It is indeed about a homicide — or presumably homicides, plural, though I can’t say for certain since I was only sent the first episode in time to write this review. And it does in fact take place in a tiny village, specifically one called Gibsons, off the west coast of Canada.
On the other, it’s such a generic name that it conveys almost nothing. It offers no indication of what distinguishes this premise from the likes of, say, Hulu’s Under the Bridge or HBO’s True Detective or Peacock’s Poker Face, all of which are also about murders in small towns. Maybe that’s because, at least in the premiere, the show itself doesn’t seem totally sure.

When Fox‘s new detective drama Murder in a Small Town premieres in September, it will include a dedication to the late Donald Sutherland, who died on June 20. Not only because his son, Rossif Sutherland, is the star of the series, but because Donald himself tried to get the books on which this series is based adapted into a movie decades prior. Rossif was completely unaware of his father’s connection to the story until after he was already offered the lead role. Murder in a Small Town is an adaptation of Lr Wright’s Karl Alberg book series (there are nine novels total). Getting the Canada-set books adapted for the screen was a passion project for Donald for years, writer Ian Weir told Deadline. The actor first learned of the story when reading Weir’s script for the film, which prompted him to read the books. He fell in...

After production on Fox’s upcoming series Murder in a Small Town wrapped on the southern Sunshine Coast of Canada in mid-May, star Rossif Sutherland headed to America’s Sunshine State to be with his father, Donald Sutherland, who would die a month later. Rossif was actually scheduled to do voice-over (Adr) work for the show from Miami on the day his father died — one of several elements that tie the two men to Murder in a Small Town, a passion project of Donald’s for 30 years. Reflecting that, the series will include a dedication to the late actor when it debuts on Fox on September 24 with a 90-minute premiere.
“There was a lot of serendipity around this project,” Rossif, in his first interview since his father’s death, said about the series based on late Canadian author L.R. Wright’s Alberg novels, which follows big-city detective Karl Alberg (Sutherland...

Like a less grim version of The Killing, Murder in a Small Town is an impressively solid whodunnit set in the Pacific Northwest that plays like a page-turner… with just a touch of cozy romance. The series is based on a series of thrillers by author L.R. Wright, which showrunner Ian Weir called “tremendous,” adding that the books offered him “the absolute gift of wonderfully rich characters and tremendous murder mystery storylines” to adapt. In this exclusive first look at the series, you’ll see that it’s not just one murder we’re dealing with here; Rossif Sutherland stars as Karl Alberg, a former big-city cop who has moved to the cozy coastal hamlet of Gibsons to become the new chief of police. Imposing yet affable, Alberg immediately hits it off with local librarian Cassandra Mitchell (Smallville’s forever queen, Kristin Kreuk, who got her start on Weir’s...

Canadian dramas like Saving Hope, Broadchurch, or Burden of Truth often have a certain flair.
Fox acquired the US rights to Murder in Small Town, which looks intriguing. It stars Kristen Kruek and Rossif Sutherland.
Many of us grew up watching Kruek on TV, and she's played several types of roles.
However, since she played Joanna Chang in Burden of Truth, it appears she's ideal for crime-solving in small towns.

The Breach, not to be confused with Breach, is the second feature from Rue Morgue founding editor Rodrigo Gudiño (The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh). Co-written by Nick Cutter and Ian Weir based on Cutter’s novel, its mix of haunted house and mad scientist themes attracted a lot of pre-release buzz which I was hoping it would live up to.
John Hawkins has one week left as sheriff of Lone Crow. Then he can put the town, and his ex Meg, behind him and start a new job in the city. That, of course, means something terrible has to happen before he can leave. And it does when a canoe bearing the mutilated remains of theoretical physicist Cole Parsons washes up at a local park.

A marriage of police procedural and Lovecraftian horror, Rodrigo Gudiño and Ian Weir’s take on Nick Cutter’s popular genre novel is treading familiar territory for the Fantasia international Film Festival but manages to acquit itself with some distinction thanks to the groundedness and specificity of its approach. It begins when a spectacularly mangled body floats down the Porcupine river in a canoe, and ends in a place which is predictable yet nonetheless retains its sinister quality.
Allan Hawco plays police chief John Hawkins, who is just one week away from moving down south to take up a new job – the very worst time to happen upon a case like this. “This is Jake’s kind of case,” says an officer at the scene of the discovery, referring to Jacob Redgrave (Wesley French). As the jealous former boyfriend of Meg (Emily Alatalo), the woman whom John is on the verge of.
