When I was 8 years old, I attended a friend's birthday party where we were going to watch "Titanic" on its double-sized VHS. All of our parents had to give expressed permission due to the nude scene, and I'm grateful every day to be the spawn of Cool Parents™ who saw this as a moment for cultural education, but it was a comment from my friend's extremely progressive mother that I think about every time I watch a disaster or post-apocalyptic film. It's when the wealthy Cal Hockley (Billy Zane) grabs a small, poor child and claims to be a single father in an attempt to secure a spot on the lifeboats reserved for women and children. His plan works, and he survives the shipwreck, which encouraged my adult supervision for the evening to scoff and utter, "Leave it to a man to manipulate the...

Ah, 2002…what a year for movies! Pierce Brosnan made his last appearance as James Bond in Die Another Day, Eminem became a breakout movie star in 8 Mile, Harry Potter and his friends were solving Hogwarts mysteries in The Chamber of Secrets and two genre defining films were about to be launched upon the world. The first being Sam Raimi’s epic superhero film Spider-Man. It was both a huge critical and box office success that would set the standard on how these types of movies would be made going forward. The second, and even more important was 28 Days Later (watch it Here). Danny Boyle’s post-apocalyptic film in which people are infected by rage was the...

Chris Sparling, the writer of Buried and Atm, is making his directorial debut with the supernatural thriller The Atticus Institute. Peter Safran of The Conjuring is on producing duties and we've got a synopsis for you below. Courtesy of Twitch, the sales art to tout the film at the American Film Market.
During the late 1970s, hundreds of cases of psi-related phenomena - E.S.P., clairvoyance, psychokinesis, etc. - were studied at The Atticus Institute, a small psychology lab founded by Dr. Henry West.
After publishing numerousjournal articles highlighting the promising results of their work, Dr. West and his fellow researchers were introduced to an unusual middle-age womannamed Judith Winstead, whose supernatural abilities tested far beyond any subject they had ever before witnessed. However, it soon became clear that Judith’s abilities were different in ways they could never have anticipated.

Producer Peter Safran made a huge splash in the horror world with The Conjuring and he's hoping to do it again with Buried writer Chris Sparling's feature directorial debut The Atticus Institute. Dr. Henry West founded The Atticus Institute in the early 1970s to test individuals expressing supernatural abilities -- E.S.P., clairvoyance, psychokinesis, etc. Despite witnessing several noteworthy cases, nothing could have prepared Dr. West and his colleagues for Judith Winstead. She outperformed every subject they had ever studied -- soon gaining the attention of the U.S. Department of Defense, who subsequently took control of the research facility. The more experiments they conducted on Judith, the clearer it became that her abilities were the manifestation of evil forces within her, prompting the government to take...

Major Henry West (28 Days Later...) A lot of bad dudes have emerged from zombie pictures over the decades. In fact, sometimes they seem to be an even larger threat than the zombies themselves (it’s almost as if there’s some sort of message they’re trying to send in these movies…). But the absolute worst of the bunch has to be Major Henry West, the deranged military leader played with just the right manic zeal by Christopher Eccleston, who unfortunately has not done a horror film since. Power hungry maniacs are nothing new to movie villains, but it takes at least five kinds of crazy to point out the elephant in the room when it comes to dystopian futures. Those of you who have seen the movie probably know what I’m talking about. Why does he deserve to be on the list? That’s right, you guessed it.
