Angela Workman has adapted books of fiction and nonfiction, based on diverse true stories across many countries, for DreamWorks, Fox Searchlight, Focus Features/Universal International, Warner Bros, Showtime, China Film Group, Centropolis, StudioCanal UK, and many other companies in the US, UK, Europe and China. Angela researched and wrote about the lives of the Bronte sisters, in Yorkshire and at the British Library in London, for DreamWorks. Warner Bros sent her across mainland China to write a feature film about the treasure fleet of Ming Emperor Zhu Di and his Muslim naval commander Zheng He. As a studio screenwriter, Angela has been a guest of The Forbidden City in Beijing, the Bronte Museum in Haworth, New York City Ballet, the Lincoln Center Library for Performing Arts, the Anne Frank Center in New York, the National Board of Review, and CBS News. She spoke on behalf of 'The Zookeeper's Wife' at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC.
Angela has worked with directors Roland Emmerich, Niki Caro, Wayne Wang, and famed commercials director Leslie Dektor, and is co-producing films with David Fincher and Stephen Colbert. Her first studio feature sale was to Stephen Spielberg and DreamWorks. Her first feature film, THE WAR BRIDE, starring Anna Friel, is on Amazon. Angela is eligible to work worldwide.
As a screenwriter, Angela has adapted works by British naval historian Gavin Menzies ('1421: The Year China Discovered the World'), Lisa See, Diane Ackerman, Jo Baker, Edith Wharton, John Coe Robbins, biographer Linda Gordon, Viennese psychotherapist Viktor Frankl, and journalist John Dickerson.
Before becoming a screenwriter Angela trained as a classical stage actress. She is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama.
(September 2014): Angela is writing a romantic drama about New York City Ballet dancer Tanny le Clercq, loved by both George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, for The Weinstein Company. Spyglass Media Group acquired from Weinstein.
(September 2015) In production in Prague on "The Zookeeper's Wife," starring Jessica Chastain and Daniel Bruhl. Focus Features and Universal International distributing theatrically in 2017-18. HBO run in 2018-20. Cate Blanchett originally cast as Antonina Zabinska.
(July 2016) Writing an original adventure feature about the opium wars between China and Britain, for LD Entertainment.
(March 2017) Angela appeared on panels in New York City, Washington DC, and Los Angeles, on the press tour for "The Zookeeper's Wife." She was a guest speaker at the Anne Frank Center in New York, the Heritage Foundation, the Holocaust Museum in Washington, the National Board of Review, and the New York Public Library, and spoke about the rescue of refugees during the Holocaust.
(July 2018) Writing and co-producing a film about trailblazing journalist Nancy Dickerson for Stephen Colbert and Showtime. Based on the book "On Her Trail" by CBS journalist John Dickerson, a biography written about his mother.
(October 2020) Amazon acquiring "Lange." Rooney Mara originally set to play photojournalist Dorothea Lange.
(December 2022) Adapting "Man's Search for Meaning," Viktor Frankl's seminal book about survival, and the search for meaning even in our darkest hours, for Straight Up Impact, Tony Robbins, and the Frankl estate in Vienna.
