I heard about The Butterfly Room – an American suspense thriller with an Italian sensibility, starring the British-born Barbara Steele – almost a year ago, and I’ve been waiting ever since on the proverbial pins and needles to see it.
Well, I got plenty of pins and needles in the squirm-inducing scenes involving the pinning of butterflies to specimen boards! Be sure to read my The Butterfly Room review for the details!
In a nutshell, it was well worth the wait.
I figured I’d be lucky to catch a streaming link somehow, never dreaming I’d actually get a personal invite from the film’s director to see it in a historical indie movie theater just down the street from my house – and what’s more, the regal Ms. Steele was in attendance!

Chicago – If one actress can represent an era of classic and cult movies, P.J. Soles is a pretty good candidate. Her string of roles in high profile and familiar films from the mid 1970s to early ‘80s including “Carrie,” “Halloween,” “Breaking Away.” “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” “Private Benjamin” and “Stripes.”
From rocking with The Ramones to getting the “Aunt Jemima Treatment” from a young Bill Murray, Soles stood out as a fun leading actress and best friend during a more innocent age of “Star Wars” Hollywood. She was born in Germany as Pamela Jayne Harden to an American mother and Dutch father, and in her father’s capacity working international insurance, lived all over the world. She ended up going to college at Briar Cliff in New York State, which led to an early modeling and acting career in Manhattan. She went by her initials, P.J., and has...

After watching the tense trailer for Jonathan Zarantonello's The Butterfly Room you have to ask yourself, what kind of parent would leave their child in the hands of Barbara Steele? It's bad news for little girls and their dolls.
The cast is a who’s who of women in horror including Camille Keaton, Adrienne King, P.J. Soles, Heather Langenkamp, Erin Leehrsen and Barbara freakin’ Steele. It’s like a scream queen convention in movie form.
A few years back I spoke very briefly with Camille Keaton about her small role in The Butterfly Room and what she told me is a total spoiler, so click here to read her interview at your own risk.
As a fan of any movie that involves psychotic women, especially one that puts so many crazy women together on one screen, it looks pretty amazing. Read the synopsis and watch the trailer:

Is Italian horror cinema really dead? Directors Lamberto Bava, Sergio Stivaletti and Ruggero Deodato have been struggling to make a fright anthology since 2008; genre legend Dario Argento can’t even get his latest picture Giallo properly released; and in the last 15 years, only singer/director Federico Zampaglione’s Shadows has shown a clear personal vision and interesting take on the genre. And Jonathan Zarantonello, director of the new chiller The Butterfly Room, had to leave his homeland in order to make his movie, from which you can see a few exclusive behind-the-scenes photos after the jump.
