Recently we’ve learned that Mike Flanagan is developing a TV series based on Stephen King’s novel Carrie at Amazon MGM Studios. The series is a fresh take on the story of Carrie White, a shy high school girl who lives with her controlling mother. After her father dies, Carrie faces bullying at school, a scandal that shocks her town, and the discovery of her powerful telekinetic abilities.
Flanagan will write, executive produce, and be the showrunner for the series, with Trevor Macy also serving as an executive producer. Melinda Nishioka will manage the project for Intrepid Pictures.
In his latest interview with MovieWeb, Flanagan explained how he got the rights for the show despite making “substantial” changes to the source material.

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan believes that “Physical media is critical,” which is not a belief that was shared by his former employers at the Netflix streaming service. Flanagan recently said that he tried very hard to get Netflix to release the work he did for them on Blu-ray and DVD, but they “refused at every turn.” But while several Flanagan projects remain on Netflix and aren’t available on physical media, he did confirm earlier this year that he has taken his 2016 film Hush away from the streaming service so he can give it a long-awaited physical media release. The 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release is coming from Scream Factory on November 26th (copies are available for purchase at This Link) – and they have just revealed that this physical media release of the movie is going to be packed with extras!

Mike Flanagan is renowned for his horror TV shows and is once again teaming up with Stephen King for an adaptation of Carrie.
Carrie was Stephen King’s first published book and nearly didn’t happen. However, after he threw it into the garbage, his lovely wife, Tabitha King, rescued it and encouraged him to publish the terrifying book. Of course, there have been many more King books published, and while may be in the past, horror maestro Mike Flanagan is returning to Stephen King’s world to adapt Carrie as a series on the small screen.

Admittedly, Stephen King fans will feel a little trepidation over the adaptation of the author’s popular book, as many have not done his work justice.

One of horror's most famous and influential stories is receiving its most significant adaptation in years, and we couldn't possibly think of anyone more suited for the task. Mike Flanagan has made a career out of taking prolific author Stephen King's written words and spinning them into live-action gold, from 2017's "Gerald's Game" all the way to his well-received prequel to "The Shining" with "Doctor Sleep" in 2019. Along the way, Flanagan has also built himself a veritable television empire, debuting multiple spine-tingling limited series for Netflix in the span of just a few years. This latest news brings together the best of both worlds, as Deadline reports that Flanagan is setting his sights on a series adaptation of "Carrie" -- the very first (and arguably most daunting) of all of King's works.

Mike Flanagan has his sights set on another classic piece of IP: “Carrie.”
The “Doctor Sleep” and “Exorcist” filmmaker is adapting Stephen King’s novel for an eight-episode series at Prime Video, IndieWire has confirmed. King’s “Carrie” was first brought to the screen by Brian De Palma in 1976. There was a sequel film, “The Rage: Carrie 2” (1999), and a 2013 remake of the original “Carrie” starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore.
“Carrie” centers on a teenager who has a sheltered life in part due to her controlling mother. Yet the titular Carrie soon realizes that the torment she has endured both at home and at school with her bullying peers has heightened her hyperkinetic powers, and a revenge plan is brewed….

Stephen King’s Carrie is getting another adaptation — this time in series form.
Amazon MGM Studios is developing a drama based on King’s 1974 novel, which has been the basis for four previous feature films. Mike Flanagan (Netflix’s The Haunting anthology, Doctor Sleep) is adapting the book and will serve as showrunner, executive producing with Trevor Macy of Intrepid Pictures. (Flanagan and Intrepid have overall deals at Amazon MGM Studios.)
Should it go forward, Carrie would stream on Amazon’s Prime Video.
Flanagan has adapted several of King’s works in the past, most recently The Life of Chuck, which won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. He also wrote the screenplays for The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game (the latter with Jeff Howard). He and Macy also have rights to King’s Dark Tower novels.

Mike Flanagan is headed back into the world of Stephen King with a brand new small screen adaptation of King’s classic novel Carrie for Amazon, Deadline reports this morning.
The plan? An eight-episode television series adaptation of the iconic horror tale.
Deadline recaps, “The 1974 novel put the young author King on the map, and also bolstered his worth as an author whose genre storytelling was most translatable to the big screen in 1976. Brian De Palma was the first director to adapt King’s coming of age story. Several follow-ups came later, including The Rage: Carrie 2, a 2002 telepic, and a 2013 remake.”
Previous filmmakers to tackle the story for screens big and small include the aforementioned Brian De Palma as well as Katt Shea, David Carson & Bryan Fuller, and Kimberly Peirce, with the titular role being played by Sissy Spacek, Angela Bettis, and Chloe Grace Moretz.

Mike Flanagan has cemented himself as one of horror's truly great modern storytellers. From his miniseries on Netflix like "The Haunting of Hill House" to underrated gems such as "Hush," the man has earned the trust of viewers. He's also earned the trust of Stephen King, as Flanagan has made two movies based on the author's work; "Gerald's Game" and "Doctor Sleep." In both of those cases, the material was incredibly difficult to adapt, yet Flanagan got it done. While the filmmaker isn't through with King, there is a project that he wishes hadn't gotten away from him.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about his new King adaptation "The Life of Chuck," Flanagan was asked if there was a project that he felt was "the one that got away." He was quick to cite his planned adaptation of King's 2014 novel "Revival," which he wrote a script for before the project ultimately fell apart.

Mike Flanagan is not just one of our modern horror masters, but he's proved to be one of the very best there is at adapting Stephen King's work for the screen. Between "Gerald's Game" and "Doctor Sleep," he's done the unthinkable not once, but twice. Two of the least-adaptable King novels were brought to life in brilliant fashion. Now, Flanagan is back with another King movie in the form of "The Life of Chuck," which is earning rave reviews on the festival circuit. However, it turns out Flanagan almost lost that opportunity thanks to his currently gestating adaptation of "The Dark Tower."
King's "The Dark Tower" series is his magnum opus, consisting of multiple novels spread out over decades. Flanagan is now working on adapting those books into a show. That's great news for fans of King's work. However, as the filmmaker recently noted in an interview with Vanity Fair,...

Mike Flanagan’s home invasion horror movie Hush (2016) made its debut on Digital courtesy of Shout! Studios just last week, the film finally available to watch again after disappearing from streaming for the past couple years. The film has also never received a physical media release, but we’ve learned that’s all changing thanks to Scream Factory later this year.
Hush comes to physical media for the very first time in a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray Collector’s Edition release from Scream Factory on November 26, 2024, the company announced today!
Scream Factory previews, “This highly anticipated Collector’s Edition includes a newly restored 4K version of the film, supervised and approved by Director Mike Flanagan.
“Additionally, a new black-and-white version of the film, nicknamed the “Shush Cut,” with a new audio mix will be featured. This mix removes nearly all of the score, providing a different effect that is just as terrifying as the original.

In 2016, Mike Flanagan's horror movie "Hush" hit streaming service Netflix and quickly got attention. The slasher-thriller follows a deaf writer (played by Kate Siegel) who finds herself targeted by a masked killer. Since she's unable to hear, the writer can never quite be sure when the killer is coming or what he's doing, which only heightens the tension. It's an effective movie from one of our best modern horror filmmakers, and Flanagan would go on to make more projects with Netflix, including the excellent series "The Haunting of Hill House." But sadly, streaming doesn't last forever, and in 2023, "Hush" left Netflix. To make matters worse, the movie wasn't available anywhere else — Netflix very rarely does physical releases for their streaming titles, and as such, "Hush" felt like it was lost in the ether.
Thankfully, hope was on the way. For one thing, the movie became available on digital in August of this year.

While the Toronto International Film Festival won’t officially launch a sales market until 2026, this year kicks off on Thursday with multiple buzzy titles for sale starring the likes of Ben Stiller, Sydney Sweeney, Jude Law and Tom Hiddleston.
Hollywood descends upon the Canadian metropolis for starry world premieres and the unofficial start of awards season. But for years now TIFF has also been a place of serious business. Last year the Glen Powell rom-com “Hit Man” sold to Netflix for $20 million at the festival after a raucous screening.

There’s never been a “normal” year in the independent film market, but this will be the first time in five years that Toronto and Venice don’t have to deal with active catastrophe. No massive labor strikes, pandemics, virtual screenings, or even overwhelming panic about the box office: Just movies seeking buyers.
Now, only one question remains: With this newfound sense of calm, will they show up? As one sales agent put it to IndieWire: If this year turns out to be slow for indie film sales, there are “no more excuses.”
A lot happened while everyone was busy fending off disaster. It’s unclear if theatrical viewing habits will ever return to the levels of 2019 and nowhere is that more apparent than the indie sector. Back in the day, Netflix and Amazon were major buyers; today, all streamers have scaled way, way back on their acquisitions. They...

Mike Flanagan’s home invasion horror movie Hush has been unavailable to stream for a while now, and with no physical media release available at this time, well, the Netflix movie had seemingly dropped off the face of the planet entirely. This week, however, it’s back.

The katet is still coming to your TV screens … sometime. Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy first announced their intention to adapt Stephen King’s magnum opus of a book series for the small screen in 2022, but Flanagan has since turned his attention to another King adaptation in The Life of Chuck and he recently signed on to write and direct a new Exorcist film. So where does that leave The Dark Tower TV show? Here’s what we know so far. Is The Dark Tower TV show still happening? Yes — just very, very slowly. In July, Flanagan said in a podcast interview with Talking Scared that he was still working on the Dark Tower adaptation, even while making The Exorcist. “It became so clear to me that that kind of oil tanker of a project was just gonna be moving along. It’s perfectly feasible for me to be working...

Once set up at Netflix, Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s production company Intrepid Pictures now has an exclusive multiyear overall series deal with Amazon MGM Studios and one of the shows they’re working on for Prime Video is Flanagan’s dream project, a series adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower novels. Fans are anxiously waiting for updates on the status of that project – but when it moves forward, it won’t be the first time someone has attempted to make a TV series version of The Dark Tower for Prime Video. Five years ago, Glen Mazzara, Akiva Goldsman, and King himself developed a take on the material and a pilot episode was shot, with Stephen Hopkins directing and Sam Strike in the lead role of gunslinger Roland. Amazon decided not to move ahead with the series at that time… and for fans who have been wondering what the pilot episode was like,...

Chris Stuckmann could have rested on his laurels. He could have coasted on his 2 million-plus YouTube subscribers and led a happy, fulfilling life as the internet’s premier movie buff. But teenage dreams don’t go away that easily, and as grateful as he is for the film community that’s formed around his eponymously named YouTube channel, his original ambition was to make movies, not talk about them. The Ohio native has been helming amateur shorts and features with his friends since he was 14 years old, and he continued doing so once he started YouTubing at 21. Each project got better and better, and in 2019, Stuckmann decided to truly make a go at professional filmmaking.

Soon after, Flanagan and Macy secured the rights to make Flanagan’s dream project a reality: they started developing a series adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower novels. Big news for horror fans and avid followers of YouTuber Chris Stuckmann. The film critic's upcoming horror movie Shelby Oaks has just been picked up by Neon for theatrical distribution. Shelby Oaks will have its world premiere this weekend at the Fantasia Festival and is likely on track for a 2025 release in theaters.
Neon has been the talk of the town lately thanks to the huge success of recent release Longlegs, the captivating and unsettling serial killer starring Maika Monroe as an FBI agent investigating the titular murderer, played by an unrecognizable Nicolas Cage. Longlegs broke the record for the biggest opening weekend box office for original horror this year, earning $22.6 million.
According to Variety, Longlegs was made for less than $10 million and the studio used around that amount to market the film, so by my calculations that means its already broken even on its first weekend in cinemas.

Needless to say, there are hundreds of movies at Fantasia that we can’t wait to sink our teeth into (including something called Chainsaws Are Singing which the fest has described as “Monty Python meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Les Misérables!?!). Below are the 10 horror movies we’re most excited to see and review for...

Friday the 13th seems like a nice day for an exorcism, right? Universal has set an appropriately spooky date for their new Exorcist movie from director Mike Flanagan, per Deadline.
The new Exorcist movie from Blumhouse and Morgan Creek has been dated for theatrical release on March 13, 2026, an appropriately spooky and fitting Friday the 13th.
While plot details are currently under wraps, the new film will tell an all-new story set in The Exorcist universe and is not a sequel to David Gordon Green‘s The Exorcist: Believer. Plans for that trilogy are no longer moving forward.
Flanagan’s feature is said to be a radical new take for the franchise.
Flanagan previously said in a statement, “The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse,...

Horror Maestro Mike Flanagan’s reimagined The Exorcist film will hit theaters on March 13, 2026, Universal announced Tuesday. Put another way, this isn’t the devil you think you know.
Blumhouse and Morgan Creek’s plans for a trilogy of new The Exorcist films was derailed with the poor and polarizing response to last year’s The Exorcist Believer, directed by David Gordon Green.
Flanagan, whose credits include The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep and the new The Fall of the House of Usher has created an entirely new narrative nightmare that is not a sequel to any previous Exorcist film and that charts a new course for the film franchise.
The film will be produced by Flanagan’s longtime collaborative producer Trevor Macy (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass) for Intrepid Pictures, by Flanagan for his Red Room Pictures, and by Jason Blum (Five Nights at Freddy’s,...
