“Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight,” the festival darling and actress-filmmaker Embeth Davidtz’s directorial debut, is getting worldwide distribution from Sony Pictures Classics, the company announced Thursday.

When Embeth Davidtz wanted to adapt “Don’t Let’s Go To The Dogs Tonight,” Alexandra Fuller’s bestselling 2001 memoir about living in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) with her white farming family, she delivered an impassioned pitch to the author. “I know how to tell this story,” Davidtz told her. “I know it in my bones.”
Best recognized for her striking work in “Schindler’s List,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” and, recently, “The Morning Show,” the versatile actor indeed deeply understood Fuller’s story, a collection of memories that unfold as Rhodesia’s 1980 election that would eventually morph the country into contemporary Zimbabwe nears, amid a political climate that both underscores and rejects the country’s blatant racism. While Davidtz herself hasn’t lived in Zimbabwe, she has roots in neighboring South Africa, along with memories of witnessing violence and racism like the film’s seven-year-old protagonist, Bobo (first-time actor Lexi Venter in a revelatory...

Global Screen, the Munich-based international sales outfit, has boarded worldwide sales on “The Trek,” the upcoming first feature from leading South African cinematographer and director Meekaaeel Adam. The film is a horror-Western, in which starvation, suspicion and madness plague a family as they cross the Kalahari Desert under the eyes of primeval spirits.
“The Trek” is set in 1846, when a Dutch-Afrikaans family and their British travel companion set off on a challenging journey through the Kalahari Desert. Along the way, they meet Atshumao, a stoic man of the Khoen people, one of Southern Africa’s original indigenous, nomadic population groups.
Despite Atshumao’s warning, the group attempts a shortcut through the unforgiving landscape, unaware that this will lead them to cross paths with two ancestral spirits – who will settle a centuries-old dispute by betting on the family’s lives. The group of travelers is soon plagued by misfortune, tragedy, thirst,...

Rebooting the 1982 slasher horror, director Danishka Esterhazy tweaks the genre’s shocks in a movie that’s mostly decent fun
The 1982 video-nasty classic The Slumber Party Massacre – a confection of polyester sleepwear, orangey fake blood and phallic construction equipment with remarkable battery longevity, directed by Amy Jones – gets a reboot for a new generation with this, along with a more euphonious title, shorn of the definitive article. This time the director is Danishka Esterhazy, whose previous feature, The Banana Splits Movie, similarly retweaked a near-forgotten property from the pop-culture landfill. After an 80s-set prologue that establishes driller killer Russ Thorn’s (Rob van Vuuren) stalk-and-skewer modus operandi, we catch up with lone survivor Trish Deveraux (Schelaine Bennett) in the present day. Trish is now a paranoid parent, worriedly sending off her only daughter Dana off for a rustic overnighter with her friends. Will history repeat itself?

Danishka Esterhazy’s new remake/reimagining/whatever of “Slumber Party Massacre” begins with an idea so ingenious, it’s surprising no one’s done it before: packing a full feature’s worth of action into the pre-title sequence. It amounts to a remake in miniature; in those opening minutes, Esterhazy introduces final girl Trish Devereaux (Masali Baduza) and all of her friends, who are plucked off one by one by driller killer Russ Thorne (Rob van Vuuren), before she kills him, and then the credits roll.

Before you ask, yes – we still don’t have a sequel to [insert favorite one-off movie], but we *do* have five Tremors continuations. Each iteration pits survivalist Burt Gummer against advanced Graboid mythology in some way, including 2018’s latest Canadian basecamp defense. Where oh where could Don Michael Paul’s frosty Tremors: A Cold Day In Hell *possibly* tunnel to next? Exactly where the title suggests. A cold day in “Hell” (otherwise known as Canada).
How…inventive?
To be fair, what’s sacrificed by not introducing a new childishly-named Graboid evolution is swapped for Burt Gummer’s (Michael Gross) Ptsd freakouts and viral side effects from his digestive escape in Tremors. He’s called up North to the Nunavut province when Graboids attack ice-drilling researchers – and it’s here where he’s diagnosed with a (possibly) life-threatening affliction.
Good thing “wingman” Travis B. Welker (Jamie Kennedy) is there to impart his “father’s” wisdom...

Hold onto your butts, for the Graboids are back with a vengeance.
Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell, the sixth installment in the cult horror-comedy series, has been pegged for a direct-to-video release on May 1st. And Universal and Entertainment Weekly have unearthed the first trailer to prove it.
Embedded above, this first-look promo is heavy on action and light on sound, as there appears to be no dialogue to speak of. EW’s post has since been pulled offline, so chances are the outlet will release a corrected version later in the day. We will, as always, update this post the moment a new trailer is available, but for now, let’s take a look at those cast members about to experience a cold day in Hell.
