Celebration of cinema has always been extended by the Oscars honoring the prowess of cinematic excellence with one of the most recognized accolades. Throughout the rich history of cinema, there have been several movies based on true events, that left a mark among moviegoers or in the pages of history.
A still from Lawrence of Arabia
Also, movies that are based on true events are another way of documenting the particular incident, albeit a portion of fictionalization may alter the accuracy, but for cinema’s sake, filmmakers enjoy the basic freedom to have their own touch to the narrative. Throughout history, movies like The Great Ziegfeld by Robert Z. Leonard, or it would be criminal not to mention David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, and several other movies have claimed the Best Picture Oscars. Here is a list of six movies that won an Oscar in the Best Picture category.

Exclusive: Svetlana Efremova (The Americans) has been cast as a series regular in the upcoming fourth season of Apple TV+’s space drama series For All Mankind.
Created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, For All Mankind explores what would have happened if the global space race had never ended. The series presents an aspirational world where NASA astronauts, engineers and their families find themselves in the center of extraordinary events seen through the prism of an alternate history timeline — a world in which the Ussr beats the US to the moon.
The third season shifted the action to the early ’90s with a race to a new planetary frontier: Mars. The Red Planet became the new front in the Space Race not only for the U.S. and the Soviet Union, but also an unexpected new entrant with a lot to prove and even more at stake.

Tony “Lip” Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) is an Italian-American bouncer at New York’s Copa nightclub, a classy joint popular with the mob community. After some serious fisticuffs, the Copa is closed for refurbishment, and Tony finds himself on a sabbatical. He can’t support his family taking odd jobs and indulging in eating competitions (however magnificent an eater he may be); so when the opportunity arises to drive a wealthy musician, Dr Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), on a tour of the Deep South, he jumps at the chance. Except Tony never jumps as such – he kind of jiggles.

As we hurriedly prepare for the big year-end holiday, or even trying to catch up with all the films released in time for the awards and best lists, it’s nice to be reminded of a Christmas aspect that’s often overlooked. It’s an extra bonus when that’s the central theme of one of the year’s finest films. I’m referring to “good will toward men”, but to not be sexist, this would include all “humankind”. While it may feel great to wrap up in warm nostalgia for sweeter bygone days (and memories of those long-ago holidays), there really wasn’t a lot of “good will” toward some men. Mind you, we’ve still got a ways to go, but things are much better than they were, say 66 years ago. This new film takes off those “rose-colored” glasses that distort yesteryear. But what about that title? Is...

Chicago – In the original sin of racism in America, structured in the societal relationship between whites and African Americans, there had to be small steps before there were larger ones. In 1962, a black piano virtuoso and his white Italian New Yorker driver toured through the Deep South and developed a friendship, in the new film “Green Book.”

The title refers to a pamphlet, distributed to African Americans in the 1950s and ‘60s, that gave them tips as to which Southern State restaurants, hotels and stores that would accept their business. Universal is going limited with Peter Farrelly’s Green Book this weekend. The film, starring Oscar-nominee Viggo Mortensen and Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, is based on the true story of a racist bouncer hired by jazz pianist and composer Don Shirley to drive him through the South during the Jim Crow era. Julian Schnabel’s latest, At Eternity’s Gate, heads out via CBS Films. Starring Willem Dafoe as Vincent Van Gogh, the project came together after a visit by Schnabel and the film’s co-writer to Paris’ Musée D’Orsay.

Ok, class, who can explain what a Green Book is? For those who don’t know, it was a handbook for black motorists seeking “vacation without aggravation,” an indispensable travel guide listing friendly places to stay and tips for avoiding trouble in the Jim Crow South. As such, “Green Book” makes a clever title for a road movie unlike any other: the true story of the unlikely friendship between a black concert pianist and the New York City bouncer hired to chauffeur him through unfriendly territory.
Although inspirational on its surface, the film presents a pretty bleak picture of intolerance in 1962 America, when segregation and other openly racist policies would have made such a trip a dangerous prospect for a wealthy, well-educated black man, with or without a bruiser like Frank Anthony Vallelonga to watch his back. Featuring a pair of terrific performances by Viggo Mortensen as a goombah with...

Chicago – The military soldier is one of the most fascinating character studies in art. He or she works at the highest level their training allows, and routinely go into battles based on decisions made far away from their own reality. “Act of Valor” attempts to define that loyalty - to themselves, their fellow soldiers and their country.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The film seems to go about it in the wrong way. Real Navy Seal specialists, whose unit most famously accomplished the takedown of Osama bin Laden, are used here as props for a speculative fictional scenario. Asking these men and women to be “actors,” while at the same time surrounding them with villains that would be more at home in a James Bond movie, lessens the impact of what they really do. If this film was trying to tug at our patriotic heartstrings - and given the emotions directed toward the missions...

There are times I feel the need to walk on eggshells when discussing a film. Act Of Valor is one of those instances where I have two conflicting but equally valid opinions on the film.s perceived purpose and success thereof. For a film that has been relatively well marketed for what seems like a fairly good stretch of time, I imagine most who have seen the trailers and TV spots are well aware that the film is an action story based upon real tactics and missions, most likely a hybrid of several pieced together, as not to reveal any specifically sensitive information. Considering this, how does the film grade?

Act of Valor Trailer. Mike McCoy, Scott Waugh‘s Act of Valor (2011) movie trailer stars Roselyn Sanchez, Emilio Rivera, Nestor Serrano, Gonzalo Menendez, and Alex Veadov. Act of Valor‘s plot synopsis: “Act of Valor follows a Navy Seal squad on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent, and in the process takes down a complex web of terrorist cells determined to strike America at all costs.”
Looks cool but I think I got more out of Surviving the Cut than I will out of Act of Valor. The film looks good though. Some have described this as a propaganda film where I see it as a celebration of the heroism of elite soldiers. I believe both arguments are accurate.
