“Fast X” and “Lupin” director Louis Leterrier will make his animation debut with “The Chimera Brigade,” an action/sci-fi series that pulls from European folklore and pop culture and turns a simple comic-book premise: What if Marie Curie’s discoveries help birth the world’s first superheroes?
Leterrier will co-direct with Antoine Charreyron (“Batwheels”), while Ron Dyens of Sacrebleu Productions acts as lead producer. The project is adapted from an award-winning comic series written by Serge Lehman and Fabrice Colin and illustrated by Gallic artist Gess.
Taking place between the two world wars in a steampunk vision of Paris evocative of Jules Verne and “The Rocketeer,” the series sets a Gallic and Teutonic superhuman squads against one another in a race to prevent – or accelerate – the next global conflict. Like a continental counterpart to Alan Moore’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” the series folds in figures from European literature and mythology,...

Colcoa is keeping up with the times. Now in its twenty-first year, the lauded French film festival, sponsored by the Franco-American Cultural Fund, has added a pair of forward-thinking new categories for its newest edition. This year will include a virtual reality program and a web series competition, in addition to its Cinema, Television and Shorts competitions.
“These two new popular formats offer more opportunities to showcase the creativity of French producers and filmmakers as well as the diversity of French production,” said François Truffart, Colcoa Executive Producer and Artistic Director. “While entertainment is still the key word for the program, with a balanced mix of comedies and dramas, several topical issues will cover the program this year, including the environment, discrimination, racism, terrorism, and the role of the artist in society. More than ever, Colcoa will offer a unique opportunity to see these universal topics from different angles.”

An enormous wasted opportunity. That is the best way to sum up Antoine Charreyron's The Prodigies, an animated feature with an intriguing premise but a horrible, horrible script that doesn't know what sort of movies it wants to be for what sort of audience and collapses entirely under a ridiculously over complicated plot and complete lack of character development.No. I did not like this movie. At all.The story goes like this. We begin with Jimbo as a young teen. He's an obviously intelligent young man but stuck in an abusive home and it takes just moments before his father is throwing his mother down the stairs and laying the belt on to Jimbo - an act of violence that flashes to white and somehow...

A couple of years ago, the Toronto International Film Festival launched a new sidebar called City-to-City, devoted to focusing attention on a specific nation's cinema. They drew much criticism and protest over their inaugural selection of Tel Aviv, sparked by Toronto filmmaker John Greyson's withdrawal of his film from the short film competition. Tiff defended its decision, claiming it was an innocent selection based purely on cinema, rejecting that their were ill-advised political undertones with the choice. Cannes is starting up its own like-minded section this year, albeit smaller, simply calling their selected country a "Guest Country". They've picked Egypt to jumpstart this to-be annual feature. The selection of Egypt is politically motivated, for sure, but for obvious reasons it's unlikely to draw the same level of ire as Tiff's Tel Aviv pick. The January 25 uprising that led to a national revolution arose from a strenuous world-wide battle that...

It’s a French animated feature titled The Prodigies (aka La Nuit des Enfants Rois), directed by Antoine Charreyron.
Its story goes… NYC, Central Park, 2010. Five young teenagers are violently assaulted. But they’re not your average teenagers… they’re prodigies. The trauma of the assault incites them to lash out against the world in a cold and calculating way in the name of revenge. The only person aware of their plan is Jimbo Farrar, a sixth prodigy, who has gathered them, and who fights against the other 5, in order to prevent a world disaster of apocalyptic proportions.
Warner Bros France is responsible for this, so I suppose it’s only a matter of time before we see a live-action North American remake??? At the very least, we’ll probably see a subtitled, or English-dubbed version soon enough.
It’s supposed to have already been released in France, last month specifically.

The Palais des Festivals, which is where I watched all of the press screenings
It seems there have been a lot of articles speculating as to which films will be showing at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival this year, each of them pretty much naming the same films. However, the only film confirmed is Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris which will open the fest. The rest is simply speculation and rumor, but now the most comprehensive and seemingly "in the know" list has surfaced.
Of the films currently expected to hit the Croisette, but obviously in no way confirmed yet seem to be among the most likely, are Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In, Gus Van Sant's Restless and Lars von Trier's Melancholia.

The Berlin Film Festival begins today and in typical Ioncinema.com fashion, I've decided to unveil my predictions for the 2011 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. I've taken the liberty at breaking down the predictions by what should logically fit into what sections: Main Comp, Ucr and the Director's Fortnight sidebar. In the Main Competition category, we should see an increase in the number of titles selected (perhaps hovering around the twenty mark. We can cross out films such as Haneke's latest, Kamen Kalev's The Island, Raymond Depardon's Journal de France, Andrei Zvyagintsev's (2007's Banishment) latest and I wouldn't be surprised if Walter Salles' On the Road isn't completed on time -- and in what should be a vintage year for the festival, these no-shows won't matter. A pair that remain in limbo are the alreasy completed David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method and Pawel Pawlikowski...

Here is our first look at the animated French movie The Prodigies from director Antoine Charreyron. The trailer features Muse's "Exogenesis Symphony: Part 1".
I am digging the video game feel of the film, which makes sense since Charreyron's background is in video games.
Synopsis:
NYC, Central Park, 2010. Five young teenagers are violently assaulted. But they're not your average teenagers... they're prodigies. The trauma of the assault incites them to lash out against the world in a cold and calculating way. The five chillingly brilliant minds come together to concoct a perfect revenge. The only person aware of the pending doom is Jimbo Farrar, a sixth prodigy, who has gathered them. As long as he fights against his five counterparts with all his might, there's hope for the world. But should he turn over to their side, it's only a matter of time before a disaster of apocalyptic proportions ensues...

What the hell is The Prodigies? That's a question I'd very much like to have answered myself. Prior to the teaser trailer, I hadn't heard a thing about this 3D animated film from France, but now it's quickly become one of my more anticipated movies of the year. The film is based on Bernard Lenteric's early '80s novel of the same name (French title: La nuit des enfants rois), and centers around a group of gifted teenagers whose past traumas cause them to wreak havoc against the world -- and the one person capable of putting a stop to their revenge. Watch the immensely cool teaser trailer after the break. Within a period of 60 seconds, The Prodigies teaser (found via Twitch Film [1]) injects enough swirling camera movements and city-wide destruction -- all hypnotically set to "Exogenesis Symphony Pt 1: Overture" by Muse -- to get any action aficionado salivating and longing for more.

Not much to say really except Antoine Charreyron's The Prodigies (french title: La Nuit des enfants rois) has a release date and a teaser poster. It seems the four-eyed fella has a chip on his shoulder.

Kinology is heading to Cannes with a single title in Copacabana – the Isabelle Huppert starring with her daughter comedy is a focal point in the Critic's Week section this year. It's the projects that they've got on the sales slate that have got my ears perked up in an upright position – beginning with Juan Solanas' next - he is currently shooting Upside Down in Montreal, while Andrew Niccol is still in pre-production mod with The Cross. - Kinology is heading to Cannes with a single title in Copacabana – the Isabelle Huppert starring with her daughter comedy is a focal point in the Critic's Week section this year. It's the projects that they've got on the sales slate that have got my ears perked up in an upright position – beginning with Juan Solanas' next - he is currently shooting Upside Down in Montreal, while Andrew Niccol is still in pre-production mod with The Cross – if I remember correctly it was first announced at last year's Cannes and they are trying to bring down the price tag on the 50 million dollar-ish production. French items worth keeping an eye out for are Benoît Philippon's Lullaby for Pi – which was shot in Canada and would logically find a spot at Tiff. Mathieu Kassovitz also has a project in development . Buried by Rodrigo Cortes - Post-Production Heartbreaker (L'arnacoeur) by Pascal Chaumeil...

As an animation buff, I try to keep a lookout for little known gems from around the world and perhaps I have hit the jackpot on a potentially cool thriller from France. Its called The Prodigies (aka in french: La Nuit des enfants rois), a motion-capture animated film by director Antoine Charreyron and Aton Soumache, the producer of the CG sci-fi noir film Renaissance. Based on Bernard Lenteric’s bestselling French novel, the budget is estimated at E40 million ($54 million). Character designer Humberto Ramos has offer the first glimpse of the production art at his blog site.

Adapted from Bernard Lenteric’s eponymous 1982 novel, The Prodigies (also known as The Child Kings) finished its shoot in February. It used live actors equipped with sensors which were then reinserted and reworked into the images in the graphic set. This is supposed to be a 3d animation, but it's not clear if what type of 3d that means. I've been holding off on posting news of this hoping that something more would show up, but it's been long enough. This looks and sounds like one incredible project and I can't wait for more. The film is directed by Antoine Charreyron and the book is adapted by Mathieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière. A release is slated for September of 2010.
Central Park, New York. Five children are savagely assaulted. But these five are unlike most : They are child prodigies. From this atrocity they draw a cold and endless hatred of the world.
