Election Day is here, and the major news networks are prepared for a long night — and potentially a long week.
With over 50 million people early voting in the 2024 Presidential Election, Tuesday night will offer plenty of results to thumb through even if an ultimate winner isn’t called until later in the week, and most of the news networks will kick off their election night coverage at 6 p.m. Et, with CNN even starting at 12 a.m. Et while NBC News begins at 5 p.m. Et.
MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki will return to the Big Board — and will even be livestreamed on Peacock and other social platforms — while Fox News will see Bill Hemmer steering the “Bill”-board.
Most networks have scheduled eight hours of election night programming from 6 p.m. Et to 2 a.m. Et, with a result for the presidential showdown between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump not expected immediately.

It’s been 20 years since the beloved stoner comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle first hit theaters, which is why the titular burger chain offered a Harold & Kumar-themed meal earlier this year, consisting of a box full of 20 burgers, which had to be ordered between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. Thankfully, White Castle stopped short of asking customers to provide urine samples proving that they were, in fact, high as shit.
To celebrate the anniversary, the creatives behind the film, including stars John Cho and Kal Penn, chatted with Rolling Stone, describing the ins and outs of the film’s production. Penn also revealed that, despite the fact that the movie initially flopped in theaters, its eventual cult following included several high-ranking politicians — who still never bothered to legalize weed.

Tucker Carlson and his estranged ex-boss Rupert Murdoch very nearly collided Wednesday in the lobby of the Trade Hotel in Milwaukee, where they’ve both been staying during the Republican National Convention this week. Sources tell Hot Source that the potentially awkward reunion was averted by quick-thinking Murdoch aides, who formed a human wall around the Fox News baron just as Carlson was passing by, narrowly averting contact between the two.
Carlson, of course, was fired from Fox in April 2023, part of the fallout from the Dominion Voting System lawsuit, which cost the network $787 million in damages. Relations between Fox and the talk show host — who during his tenure at Fox lobbed such on-air whoppers as George Floyd died of a drug overdose — are said to be strained, to say the least.

The Fox News Channel will offer a live simulcast of CNN’s presidential debate next week, the network announced in a statement.
The debate is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 27 and will mark the first formal debate between incumbent President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Both are the presumed nominees for their respective parties.
The event is the first time two leading presidential candidates have participated in a nationally-televised debate not organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates since the 1980s. The candidates mutually agreed to appear on CNN and ABC News for at least two debates during the election season, and the two networks have offered other TV stations and news outlets the opportunity to simulcast them live.

Updated, with latest results: Donald Trump and Joe Biden dominated a majority of Super Tuesday contests this evening, making it all the more certain that the November election will be a rematch.
Biden and Trump were projected to be the winners, by a wide margin, of party primaries in California, Colorado, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Maine, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Alabama, Utah and Tennessee. Biden also was projected to win Vermont, and Trump won a caucus in Alaska.
The lingering question was whether Nikki Haley would continue her bid for the Republican nomination as Trump’s last remaining rival. She was projected to win Vermont, denying Trump a sweep of all Super Tuesday contests. Referring to Trump’s speech earlier in the evening, her campaign said in a statement, “Unity is not achieved by simply claiming, ‘we’re united.'”

Update: Donald Trump mocked Nikki Haley’s remarks to supporters after she lost the New Hampshire primary, telling supporters that “she was doing a speech like she won.”
“She didn’t win, she lost,” Trump said.
“Who the hell was the imposter that went up on the stage before and claimed victory. She did very poorly. She had to win. The governor said, she is going to win. She is going to win. And she failed badly.”
He seemed especially irritated during the speech, telling the crowd, “I don’t get too angry. I get even.”
He explained why he decided to focus on Haley in his speech, given that he’s all but assured to get the nomination.
“I find in life you can’t let people get away with bullshit. You just can’t do that. And when I watched her, in her fancy dress that probably wasn’t so fancy,...

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Two political consultants who advised on “Succession” were shocked by how “chilling” Sunday night’s episode was and how “eerily prescient” the writers of the HBO drama continue to be.
Season 4’s eighth episode, titled “America Decides,” sees the Roy siblings squabble with one another and put their thumb on the scale in Atn’s first election night coverage since the shocking death of their father, Logan (Brian Cox). The fictional network ends up calling the state of Wisconsin before all the votes can be counted in favor of Jeryd Mencken and later calls the entire election for the far-right presidential candidate.
In an interview segment reflecting on the episode Monday night, CNN’s Jake Tapper drew parallels between the show, the behind-the-scenes communications of Fox News that emerged in its legal battle with Dominion Voting Systems and the conservative channel’s now-infamous call that Joe Biden was projected to win Arizona in the 2020 election.

“We still have absolutely no idea how this will end,” CNN’s Jake Tapper declared Tuesday as the House of Representatives appeared to come up short for the third time to vote in a Speaker.
Suffering humiliation on humiliation, GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy saw 20 far-right members of his fractious caucus put their third-ballot support behind another top Republican. With business for the new 118th Congress frozen until a Speaker is selected, McCarthy had 202 votes to 212 for House Democrats caucus chair Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and 20 votes to Republican Rep. Jim Jordan – the latter a top McCarthy ally who has urged members to vote for the California Republican.

As candidates and commentators warn that democracy is at stake in this year’s midterms, Nextstar NewsNation’s political editor Chris Stirewalt is a bit cool to the idea that Tuesday’s has that ultimate impact.
“The one thing I always try to impress upon people is, ‘The most important election is always the next election.’ Because we get to do it again, right? There is no finish line in a democracy. We just keep doing it,” Stirewalt told Deadline in an interview last week.
That’s not to say there are not concerns, as Stirewalt is well aware of the fallout from election denialism.
Back in 2020, Stirewalt defended Fox News’ call of Arizona for Joe Biden, the first sign that Donald Trump would lose the election. The network’s decision desk turned out to be correct, but the network faced a backlash on the right as Stirewalt and others defended the call.

The crisis of leadership Britain has been plunged into over recent years merits sustained study as a cautionary tale. But it demands deeper and sharper analysis than is available in “This England,” a curiously indifferent six-part miniseries notionally centred on former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s handling of the initial coronavirus outbreak, currently limping out on Sky’s U.K. arm.
When Winterbottom’s Revolution Films announced the project (originally titled “This Sceptred Isle”) last year – with Kenneth Branagh unveiled as the project’s Johnson – speculation was rife. Would the series be an ensemble satire, along the lines of Winterbottom’s rambunctious “24 Hour Party People”? Or an artfully sober inquiry, in the vein of the director’s Amanda Knox-inspired “The Face of an Angel”? In fact, it’s neither: what we’ve got is a hurriedly assembled primetime procedural that undermines its claim to rigorous accuracy from the off...

Update June 13, 2022:
Chris Stirewalt was the first in-person witness today at the House Committee hearings about the attack on the Capitol. He had worked as a Fox News political editor for over a decade until February 2021, and was part of the projection desk team that controversially declared that Arizona had been won by Joe Biden on Election Night. Though he stated today that the projection was only “controversial” to Fox News’s competitors.
Both before the election, and after, we reported on the high reputation and importance of Fox News in making projections. Irrespective of their long-time reputation as biased towards Republicans in their news coverage, their record on election projections had high credibility. Stirewalt reiterated this in his testimony. The article below adds details to this.
Based on everything that’s known, Stirewalt’s work at Fox News was professional and his personal political views were not relevant.

On Wednesday’s “Late Night,” Seth Meyers criticized the media’s reliance on asking the architects of the disastrous War on Terror for context in the withdrawal from Afghanistan. It’s time we stop listening to what John Bolton thinks, you know? Listening to him is what got us here in the first place.
Meyers talked about the Afghanistan Papers that the Washington Post reported on in 2019, which showed that government leaders never really had any idea what they were doing in Afghanistan and knew that they had failed in stabilizing the country, but the military-industrial complex kept America from withdrawing. People who were making money from the war said they could fix the problems if they just had more time.

“And that’s how ‘forever wars’ happen: People in charge just keep asking for a little more time to turn things around and then, next thing you know, it...

A night after NBC’s Seth Meyers called out Sean Hannity and Fox News for their ongoing opposition to gun law reform, the Fox News Channel personality launched a tirade against the NBC Late Night host, chastising Meyers for name-calling before name-calling him a “limousine liberal, socialist, hypocritical asshole.”
“And you are not funny, ever,” Hannity zinged.
What set off the Donald Trump loyalist was Meyers’ Wednesday night “Closer Look” segment examining gun violence and the recent mass shootings in Boulder and Atlanta. Meyers lambasted “a small minority of sociopaths with outsized power in politics who stand in the way when the rest of us try to do something about it,” and criticized Hannity for only “briefly mentioning” the Boulder shooting during his program.
Hannity took the bait. “You want to call me sociopathic, which you have called many others before, like Trump, like Karl Rove, you use the word a lot,...

Seth Meyers has been taking so many closer looks at Ted Cruz and Fox News Channel lately, he’s gonna need some Visine to get the red(-state spin) out.
On Thursday’s “Late Night,” Seth’s “A Closer Look” segment first drilled down into the Texas senator’s refusal to wear a mask during a press conference, despite being asked to by a reporter. Meyers then nailed Fox News for, in his words, being “more desperate” to use their collective Joe-Biden-hiding-in-a-basement quip than “George Constanza was to use his ‘jerk store’ line.”
But neither of those is why we decided to write this clip up today. No, we just liked the coincidence that in it, Seth Meyers called “Hannity” crony Cruz an “asshole” on the same night Sean Hannity called Seth an “asshole.”
We knew, it. We’re surrounded by assholes.

Georgia representative Marjorie Taylor Greene became the subject of Stephen Colbert’s latest GOP roast after her comments about a wildfire-starting “Jewish space laser” and other conspiracies gained attention.
While Greene, who is a public QAnon supporter, may be one of the more vocal GOP figures sharing potentially dangerous conspiracy theories, Colbert noted that she’s far from the first.
“This kind of behavior from Republicans was coming,” The Late Show said on Tuesday night.
During his opening monologue, Colbert revisited the George W. Bush Administration, calling out former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove. During his time as a White House representative, Rove said his critics were part of “the reality-based community” and claimed that people like him “create our own reality.”
With generations of GOP senators finding solace in different realities, it’s now wonder that current Republican figures support QAnon, Colbert said.

While most political pundits are expressing doubt that enough Senate Republicans will grow a spine to convict the president in the coming impeachment trial, one influential GOP strategist, Karl Rove, says if Trump uses Rudy Giuliani to lead his defense, the likelihood of a conviction only rises.
When asked on Fox News Sunday about the chances Trump will be convicted in the Senate, Rove admitted that the usual partisanship might take a backseat this time around.

Karl Rove had some advice for the man who consistently claims to “not like losers” – Americans do not like sore losers and Trump “is on the edge of looking like a sore loser.”
After Fox News’ Chris Wallace asked the former deputy chief of staff to George W. Bush if he expects the outgoing president to continue to contest the election past Monday when the Electoral College formally casts their ballots for president and vice president, Rove used the opportunity to speak to Trump’s endgame, and offered some unsolicited advice.

Fox News puts Joe Biden’s electoral vote count at 264, six short of victory, raising the possibility that the network will be the first to call the presidency for the Democratic nominee.
The past 24 hours have been a whirlwind of snazzy red and blue electoral maps, deep dives into voting data and weary TV anchors going on little sleep. And there have been standout moments, one of which is the drama surrounding Fox News’ call of Arizona for Biden, a call that the Associated Press also made but not yet any of its rivals. Coverage shifted a bit on Wednesday to potential Donald Trump campaign legal challenges, the latest of which is a lawsuit filed to stop the vote count in Georgia.

President Trump was going to make a speech from the White House about the 2020 election, a process so unique and unprecedented that, at well past 2 in the morning eastern time, no news organization could predict who was going to be the winner. Before he got on camera, however, Norah O’Donnell had something to impart to her viewers.
“We at CBS News are not projecting in this presidential race. We will not disenfranchise the millions of voters in those battleground states and the hundreds of thousands in Georgia who also have not had their votes counted,” said O’Donnell, speaking during CBS News coverage of the election well after most viewers normally watch her on “CBS Evening News.” Moments later, as Trump spoke, anchors on NBC, MSNBC and CNBC broke into his comments — during which he falsely claimed he had won the election despite millions of votes left uncounted – – and Savannah Guthrie,...

Fox News saw quite a bit of backlash for calling Arizona for Joe Biden on Tuesday night.
The Trump camp contested the call right away, saying that the number of outstanding votes in the southwestern state still gave the president a very real chance to win. Fox News’ Decision Desk stood by the decision, however, stating their statistical models put Trump four standard deviations away from winning.
“Yes, there are some outstanding votes in Arizona,” said Arnon Mishkin, director of the Fox News Decision Desk, after the call was made. “Most of them are coming from Maricopa, where Biden is currently in a very strong position. And many of them are mail-in votes where we know from our Fox News voter analysis Biden has an advantage. This could be an election night like no other. Since television coverage began, several elections took until the next morning to declare a winner — 1960, 1968, 1976 — and, technically, a winner was never declared by the networks in 2000. Some — 1964, 1972, 1980, 1984 — were landslides, with a winner known early when polls closed in all states.
And, of course, there was 2016. Experts had warned that Donald Trump’s defeat was not a done deal with a tightening race in its final days. As hard as it might be to top the drama of that night, this year — despite a consensus on Joe Biden being ahead — the real-time story evolution could be filled with even more twists and turns, and the potential for confusion and misdirection is massive.
So how best to follow the results? Here are some hints I’ve learned from being a political junkie; my first viewing was as a seven-year-old in 1960, including the next...
