Queer history cannot escape its own evanescence. Neither can queer spaces, really. To judge by the conceit behind Georden West’s fabulous, if oblique, “Playland,” such ephemerality is precisely what makes such a history and such spaces so ripe for memorializing. In this case, West has turned his attention to the Playland Café which, over its storied tenure from 1937 to 1998, became a fixture of the Boston gay scene. Rather than narrativize the bar’s own story, West opts for a collage-like approach, conjuring up figures from the bar’s many pasts in intersecting vignettes that together capture the spirit of the Playland Café, both at its glory and now following its demise.
At the center of “Playland” is an interdisciplinary sensibility. West’s film builds itself out with the use of archival images, historical audio clips, choreographed numbers and glittering tableaux vivants. This is an excavated history that requires collapsing and colliding worlds and words.

Having its world premiere at the Intl. Film Festival Rotterdam, Georden West’s directorial debut “Playland” is an interdisciplinary film about the titular establishment, Boston’s oldest gay bar. “I was volunteering at an MIT event, like an archive hackathon, and I learned about People Before Highways, which was a grassroots movement against urban renewal and the construction of a highway through the middle of Boston, and they were successful,” says West of how they first came across the bones for the film. “I think it is a story of what happens when government intervention is very successful in a fringe subculture in erasing it. So I became quite impassioned, and that’s what led me initially to the archive to dig at the history project.”

Buoyed by the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage, things looked really good for Lgbtq people at the start of 2016. Then came the Orlando massacre, and with it the reminder that queer people were not safe, not even within the comforts provided by its culture.
That was only six weeks ago, but it seems longer. Orlando has fallen out of the news cycle — for the media, too many fresher tragedies take precedence. There’s the police murders of black men, an assassin’s murders of police and the public in Dallas, the Nice attacks, and even another Florida nightclub shooting, this one in Fort Myers. And for the public, the crises converge. There were signs remembering Orlando at Black Lives Matter rallies, and the Lgbtq community responded to Orlando with anti-gun rallies and messages of support for Muslims.
This puts Lgbtq culture in a familiar position: If the threats to...

The holidays aren’t here until Mariah Carey says so. But when you hear "All I Want For Christmas Is You" -- that’s it. It’s time.
That’s just the way it’s been since 1994, when the jolly diva dropped that musical gift under our tree. Now a ubiquitous modern-day classic, its tambourine-shaking, bell-ringing, high note-hitting joyfulness could turn even Grumpy Cat’s frown upside down.
Video: Who Covered Carey's 'Christmas' Best?
Here are nine tributes to the original song that prove – even now, 20 years later – all we want for Christmas is Mariah:
1. Magic Mariah
Not even elves or jiving gingerbread men can upstage a diva (watch as she even throws them some shade). When Carey belted the tune in 2004 at the Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade, the magic wasn’t happening inside the kingdom – it was happening on that stage.
2. Holly, Jolly and Retro

It's hard to pinpoint exactly what has brought Lady Bunny the most fame.
The legendary drag queen, who created the non-defunct annual New York City drag festival Wigstock in the mid-80s, has been performing, DJing, releasing music and appearing in films and on TV shows like "RuPaul's Drag Race" and "RuPaul's Drag U" for nearly three decades.
Known for hilarious -- and filthy -- parody covers of tracks by pop stars like Katy Perry, Bunny released an uncharacteristically straight forward dance single, "Take Me Up High" (see the video above) in July and the track has already climbed to number 29 on the Billboard Dance Chart.
We caught up with Bunny to chat about her new song, her connection to the transgender community, how her life changed after 9/11 and more.

With Jinkx Monsoon's Season 5 win firmly a thing of the past, anticipation for Season 6 of "RuPaul's Drag Race" has reached near fever pitch. While Logo hasn't even announced a premiere date (though the new season will likely follow those that have come before it and bow late January, 2014), the show is rumored to be currently in production, causing a flurry of casting rumors.
A website called Buzzsauce claims to have determined which 12 drag queens will be gunning for the title in Season 6, utilizing the very scientific method of noting who has been quiet on social media. Below are the dozen names thought to be filming now, though be sure to take it all with a grain of salt.
1. Adriana Le Glam
It's noted that this fishy (meaning: very feminine) queen from NYC, while rumored to be on the show, has remained quite active on social media. So, there goes that whole process Buzzsauce used.

"RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 5 came to a close on Monday (May 6), with RuPaul crowning America's Next Drag Superstar from the final three made up of Jinkx Monsoon, Alaska and Roxxxy Andrews. So, who did Ru crown and award the $100,000?
After the hour-and-a-half reunion that saw each queen from the season take her place in the hot seat opposite Ru (more on that below), the crown was placed firmly on the head of Jinkx Monsoon, the campy, narcoleptic fan favorite from Seattle.
Jinkx entered the competition with a strong comedic ability and, though she occasionally struggled with her fashion and endured some nasty criticism from the season's pageant queens, she endeared herself to fans and Ru herself with her hilarious, campy presence.
Before learning she'd won, Ru asked Jinkx how she felt since taping concluded. The champ replied, "I think I've entered Jinkx 2.0: The butterfly phase." And how right she was.

We wait every year on RuPaul's Drag Race for the return of "Snatch Game," the phenomenally gaudy send-up of Match Game, where the queens parody celebrities, and this year's exhibition was damn loony. Jinkx Monsoon triumphed as Little Edie Bouvier thanks to a dead-on voice performance, and Alaska's strange, but spirited version of Lady Bunny was just as dynamic. However, some queens flailed before guest-judges Julie Brown and Downtown Julie Brown (yes, both MTV legends were present), and one such underachiever was Lineysha Sparx, the Puerto Rican looker who couldn't quite sell her impersonation of Celia Cruz. In a final lip-sync against Detox, Lineysha's sass was no match for Detox's unforgettably bizarre, jaw-quavering take on Cher.
We spoke briefly to Lineysha, a.k.a. 24-year-old Andy Trinidad, about her time on the show and discussed the problems with language barriers and attempting comedy.
AfterElton: I loved your runway presentation in the first challenge.

Drag legend RuPaul ends every episode of the hit Logo reality show "RuPaul's Drag Race" with the pronounced, preacher-like query: "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?"
And it's in those words that many "Drag Race" fans find hope and inspiration.
Beyond the glitz and glamor -- painted faces, big wigs and extravagant clothing -- drag queens can teach us a thing or two about serving up some "You better work!" confidence. Sure, some of that comes with the throwing of a little shade, but none of that compares with tapping into and bolstering your own self-worth and love.
So in that spirit, HuffPost Gay Voices asked some of our favorite drag queens their thoughts on what doing drag has taught them. Check out our exclusive round-up of life lessons from RuPaul, Sharon Needles, Lady Bunny and 12 other queens in the slideshow below.

The problem with reality television is that, unlike its scripted brethren, it can never change. Sure, producers can add in a specific gimmick in an attempt at bringing “innovation,” and different contestants come and go like a revolving door, but the show will remain the same—a reality show lives or dies by it premise. Unfortunately for RuPaul’s Drag U, it’s way too light to warrant seasonal viewing.
Much like last episode, Drag U introduces yet another group of women in need of the miracle of drag in their lives. This time, the name of the game is women in uniform: Christine, a 40-year old sergeant in the marine core; Virginia, a firefighter trainee; and Bernadette, a police sergeant who, at the drop of the hat, will burst into giant tears. Since reality television shows are certainly a dime a dozen nowadays and the 2003 hit show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy exploited the age-old stereotype of homosexuals being Fabuuulouuus to great effect, I guess a show centered upon a group of drag queens providing makeovers for straight women was inevitable. Drag U is a comfortably fun forty-five minutes of women embracing the drag inside of them, even if the competitive side is virtually non-existent.
The third season premiere begins with RuPaul introducing three new contestants: Hilary, who after losing 165 pounds lost her husband to a fat chick; Faith, an incredibly “frumpish” (the idea of anyone using the word “frumpish” in any type of conversation amuses me greatly) housewife whose husband left her alone with her children; and Shana, who married a guy after only a few weeks of knowing him and found out that he wasted most of his time checking out porn sites.

Earlier this week, after attending drag legend Lady Bunny's “Hot Mess” party at Manhattan nightclub Xl, "RuPaul's Drag Race" winner Sharon Needles found herself in a bit of a quandary: she had to drain the snake.
Unfortunately for Needles, she had already left the nightclub and what she thought was located in a secluded corner ripe for some natural graffiti -- which turned out to be one of the worst possible places for a queen to take a leak. That's right, a police station.

Madonna may be "very upset" over the premature leak of a demo track from her forthcoming album, but the pop diva was all smiles as she held court Saturday night at New York's Roseland Ballroom, where she handpicked a new dancer for her next tour as part of the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project.
The Material Girl made an appropriately regal entrance, rising from beneath the stage amid a dramatic flood of spotlights to the crowd's delight. Clad in a skintight black bustier, white blouse and her now-trademark Miu Miu boots, she quickly made her way to an adjacent stage where daughter Lourdes Leon, boyfriend Brahim Zaibat, manager Guy Oseary, publicist Liz Rosenberg and a handful of choreographers all awaited her -- no hydrangeas in sight.

I get many emails asking me to write more frequently about the small screen so I figured I should cave if a tv series really excites me (like Mad Men) but on one condition: it has to reference the movies (or feature a beloved movie actress) or involve awardage. I've highlighted movie-adjacent TV before like pre-fame TV roles or unexpected actress moments. So henceforth, I'll package it in series form. You know how we do here at Tfe. If something I happen to catch on television references the movies, I'll feature it on Saturday mornings to thank it for doing so.
Last week on Friday Night Lights Becky fell asleep watching Thelma & Louise and that is... well, I can only suspend so much disbelief and you just don't fall asleep watching that movie. It's awesome -- top ten of the 90s level awesome. But Becky is my least favorite character so whatever.

Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List
I imagine there are many perks to being Kathy Griffin’s assistant: jet-setting around the globe, meeting celebrities and pseudo-celebrities (I’m raising my penciled-in eyebrow at you, Snooki), and hanging around a really funny lady.
Oh, and having your nether regions waxed.
On this week’s D-List, Kathy hocked her wares to sell out three shows at Madison Square Garden, then worked on meeting her book publisher’s demand of selling 600 books at a single book signing, and getting herself “vagazzled.”
With a trip to the salon for a Brazilian once over and some sparkly bling just north of the money shot, Kathy was ready to get the word out and her pap smear on (under the watchful eyes of an audience and the media, of course) to spread the word about cervical cancer.
Naturally, Kathy wasn’t satisfied until her nervous...

To open the series premiere of RuPaul’s Drag U, RuPaul described the little drag university she’d lovingly created. “Deep in the Titty-Caca Valley,” said the diva, “a school was formed to help biological women unleash their inner diva, and let the world have it!” The ladies, she continued, were “ready to change their lives through the miracle of drag.” Yes, girls and other girls, RuPaul has taken her glamorous lady-eye and turned it toward frumpy gals who need a little help from the other side. The other side, of course, being their lady-boy friends and former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants,...

Fall Fashion Week has left NYC and moved on to London, where Kate Moss kicked things off on Friday. She was out again yesterday evening to join Mario Testino and Naomi Campbell at Vivienne Westwood Red Label, and Kate even celebrated afterward with the designer. Sienna Miller, meanwhile, had time to view her friend Matthew Williamson's collection before meeting up with sister Savannah at their own Twenty8Twelve show. She took a moment to chat about something other than her newest designs, saying of her on-again romance with Jude Law that, "It’s going really well. I’m so happy actually, he’s great." You guys think they should go ahead and get engaged again if it feels right, though Sienna was content to just toast her successful day at Matthew's afterparty. Welcome back to a supersized, Ed-was-snowed-in-and-watched-a-lot-of-web-video edition of Afternoon Meme. I'd like to thank Dennis Ayers for our new logos, and the ability to change them with my mood.
I have no interest in the next animated movie (training a dragon? seriously?) coming out, so I'm going to jump straight to the teaser trailer for Despicable Me, which has a delightfully goofy villain, but even better, he has minions. I've always wanted to be a super villain, not because I want to take over the work (well, not only), but because I want minions. Such a great concept, and an even better word.
The international trailer for Toy Story 3 has some additional footage, and most of it is of Ken, including a costume change and a great line.
Defendor is another super hero without super powers movie, like a Batman without billions of dollars. It's also not quite as...

Right now, you could be bidding on this.
Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.
Right now, you could be buying Scott Evans. Just sell everything you own, and call a Swiss banker, and get to Jockathon in New York City, where he's being auctioned from 6-9 Pm tonight at Dave & Busters. If you're chartering a jet to NYC for the auction anyway, you may as well stay to see When Joey Married Bobby, opening February 6 at Theatre 80 St. Marks and starring legendary performer Lady Bunny. Spartacus: Blood and Sand gave Starz their best premiere ever. The numbers aren't huge, but neither is Starz right now. Programming like Spartacus could change that fast. The Ellen DeGeneres Show today celebrated Ellen's 52nd birthday (Happy Birthday!), and Adam Lambert stopped by to sing "Strut" for the occasion,...

Tea Party. Guests at the 17th annual Hamptons Tea Dance. Photographs by Steve Dimaio for Empire State Pride Agenda. There was no sign of tea sandwiches or even tea for that matter (well, maybe a nice, strong Long Island Ice Tea) at the 17th annual Hamptons Tea Dance benefiting the Empire State Pride Agenda, which works tirelessly to enhance the social welfare and equality of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered New Yorkers. Touted as “the gay event of the summer Hamptons season,” 1,400 well-dressed and mostly well-mannered members of the gay and straight communities converged on the beautiful 10A Ranch in East Hampton, home of Will Trinkle and Juan Granados. The sprawling former stables once housed Lee and Jackie Bouvier’s horses but were converted to cottages in the 60s and 70s to house Georgica homeowners wanting to rent their estates for extra income. Several years ago, Trinkle and Granados bought the property and renovated it,...

Tweed TheaterWorks, in association with Robbi Kearns, will bring back the vaudeville Follies when such beloved artists as Rufus Wainwright, Lypsinka, Jackie Hoffman, Julie Halston, David Ilku, Brenda Bergman and Lady Bunny participate in "Folly: The Grand Street Folles, 2009," a fundraiser for God's Love We Deliver and Tweed Theaterworks on February 27 and 28, 2009 at 8pm at the Abrons Arts Center (466 Grand St.) in Manhattan. "Folly: The Grand Street Follies, 2009", inspired by the follies of the 20's -- but billed as a "Vaudeville for the New Depression" -- will be an "old school" vaudeville show featuring live acts: comedy, intriguing skits, unusual musical numbers, spectacle extravaganzas and more than a few surprises.

Blogger Perez Hilton deserves a Raz zie award for his jaw-droppingly bad extended cameo as "himself" - joining a priest for a randy frolic in the Mile High Club - in this relentlessly crass sex comedy.
"Another Gay Movie" was actually funny with some heart, but "Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild" is merely a crude series of sketches loosely revolving around an ersatz game show presided over by drag queens RuPaul and Lady Bunny.

Pair of comedies top NewFest awards
NEW YORK -- At NewFest, the New York Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Film Festival, which concluded Sunday, two coming-out comedies emerged as winners. Pete Jones' Outing Riley won best U.S. narrative feature, and Regis Musset's French comic drama Times Have Been Better won best foreign narrative feature at the 19th annual fest.
At the awards ceremony, NewFest artistic director Basil Tsiokos and administrative director Kerry Weldon also unveiled plans for a new screenplay competition, a staged screenplay reading series and a youth filmmakers initiative during the upcoming year.
The unofficial launch of a screenplay reading series took Tuesday evening with a performance of the Todd Stephens' sequel "Another Gay Movie 2: Gays Gone Wild." Several stars from the original film and drag entertainers RuPaul and The Lady Bunny were set to read the new script at New York's Zipper Theater.
Other NewFest award recipients included Saving Marriage, Mike Roth and John Henning's chronicle of the Massachusetts fight over gay marriage, which won best documentary.
