Need something new to watch on Hulu this October? Naturally, it’s a horror-heavy month with Halloween just around the corner, but Hulu doesn’t just have a library full of spooky season classics; it’s also got a handful of fresh 2024 horror movies in the crop, from the celebrated indie possession film “Late Night With the Devil” to a brand-new, ooey-gooey original Halloween horror-comedy, “Carved.”

There’s always an endless amount to scroll through, so we’ve put together a curated list of the best new movies streaming on Hulu this month. And don’t worry, you don’t need the Disney+ bundle to watch any of these.

While some productions are plagued by Covid-19, union disputes and scheduling conflicts, Karrie Crouse and Will Joines had their hands full with “rattlesnakes, lighting strikes, dust storms and locusts” while shooting their Dust Bowl-era horror, “Hold Your Breath.”

“There was one day where we had to stop shooting because an actual dust storm shut our shoot down,” Joines said. “Once the actual dust storm stopped, we all got back on location, cranked up a huge 20-foot fan and shoveled dust in it to make a fake dust storm.”

Luckily Crouse and Joines were spared from nature’s wrath at “Hold Your Breath’s” Los Angeles premiere Oct. 4 at the Harmony Gold Preview House. Sarah Paulson and the rest of the film’s leading cast joined the directing duo on the red carpet.

The Emmy-winning actress attended a red carpet premiere of the Searchlight Pictures film on Friday night (October 4) at the Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles.

Sarah was joined on the carpet by her longtime partner Holland Taylor, as well as co-stars Amiah Miller, Alona Jane Robbins, and Arron Shiver.

Also at the event were directors Karrie Crouse and William Joines, plus Sarah‘s longtime friend and frequent co-star Jason Butler Harner.

For Sarah Paulson, “Hold Your Breath” brought a sigh of relief. Sure, the Emmy- and Tony-winner here plays a woman in the 1930s Dust Bowl who is convinced her children are in danger of an unseen monster dubbed Gray Man. But the experience acting in the horror-thriller made Paulson feel “liberated.”

“American Horror Story” icon Paulson makes her executive producer film debut with the feature, co-directed and co-written by Will Joines and Karrie Crouse (“Westworld”), who previously collaborated on the short film “Propagation.” Crouse’s script was developed in the Sundance Writers’ Lab, with “Hold Your Breath,” originally titled “Dust,” announced in 2022.

“It came to me because I guess Carrie and Will, our directors, thought of me for it,” Paulson told IndieWire, adding that the film was presented as a possible project for her to executive produce. “My agent … read it earlier on and had really liked it. I was very grateful for the opportunity.

Debuting feature film directors Karrie Crouse and Will Joines describe their cinematic inspirations for Hold Your Breath as a bit of Kubrick’s The Shining and The Others with the visual panache of Malick’s Days of Heaven. After seeing the Searchlight film, which had its world premiere as one of the Toronto Film Festival’s Special Presentations last month and will begin streaming Friday on Hulu, I thought more of another movie, now 40 years old. Places in the Heart won Sally Field a second Oscar (“You really like me!”) as a widow in Depression-era North Texas trying to survive the elements threatening her farm and her two young children.

I also thought a bit about the great Todd Haynes 1995 drama Safe, with Julianne Moore hiding behind a gas mask to avoid the dangers in our environment. This film falls short of those but is memorable enough to make an impression all its own.

It’s a recurring nightmare of Margaret Bellum’s (Sarah Paulson): every night she goes to sleep and finds herself caught in the middle of cruel Oklahoma dust storm. She’s quickly forced to the ground, choking. Then when she’s about to die, Margaret awakens, gasping for breath.

Written by Karrie Crouse and co-directed by Crouse and frequent collaborator Will Joines, Hold Your Breath is a period drama with hints of the supernatural. The film follows Margaret as a woman forced to hold down the home front during the Depression of the 30s. While her husband is away seeking work to keep their dying farm afloat, Margaret looks after her two daughters: beautiful teenager Rose (Amiah Miller) and pre-teen Ollie (Alona Jane Robbins), who lost her hearing and ability to speak after a bout of scarlet fever.

Set in 1930s Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl, Sarah Paulson stars as a woman attempting to protect her children from the region's intense storms, when a seemingly supernatural threat known as the Grey Man arrives to add to their problems.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach - who will play The Thing in Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps - is also part of the cast, and appears to be playing a pretty sinister character here.

Sarah Paulson has been cast in the lead role of an upcoming horror thriller titled “Hold Your Breath.” Set during the 1930s Dust Bowl era in Oklahoma, the film tells the story of a mother named Margaret who must protect her daughters from deadly dust storms as well as haunting spirits from her past. It will premiere exclusively on Hulu on October 3, 2024 just before Halloween.

The movie delves into a local legend from the time period known as the Grey Man. According to the legend, this malevolent spirit would ride the winds of the dust storms, getting into people’s lungs and minds when they breathed in the dust. Once inhaled, the Grey Man could allegedly make people do terrible things. This sets an ominous tone for Paulson’s character as she struggles to shield her family from the external dangers of the Dust Bowl as well as unexplained internal threats.

The Toronto Film Festival has made its final lineup announcement for its 2024 edition, to include a North American premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s dystopian epic Megalopolis and a world bow for Driven director Nick Hamm’s medieval action drama William Tell.

Both movies, including the Cannes-bowing Megalopolis, will get a Gala premiere at Roy Thomson Hall. William Tell, set in 1307 and adapting Friedrich Schiller’s play, stars Danish actor Claes Bang as huntsman Tell, Ben Kingsley as King Albrecht, Rafe Spall as Stauffacher and Jonathan Pryce as Attinghausen.

Toronto, which will feature in all 278 films for its 49th edition, has also booked Special Presentations slots for another 12 titles. Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” Pedro Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” have been added to the lineup of the Toronto International Film Festival, which made its final programming announcement on Tuesday before posting the 2024 schedule.

The films were part of a group of 19 titles that brought the total number of movies at this year’s festival to 276.

The wildly ambitious and excessive “Megalopolis,” starring Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel, was one of the most talked-about and most divisive titles at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. “The Room Next Door” is Almodovar’s first English-language feature, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore; it will premiere just prior to TIFF at the Venice Film Festival. “Queer” is Guadagnino’s adaptation of a 1985 William S. Burroughs novel, and another Venice premiere.

Based on co-director and “Westworld” writer Karrie Crouse’s script out of Sundance Writers’ Lab, “Dust” is set in 1930s Oklahoma where a young mother (Paulson) is haunted by the past as she encounters a threatening presence and takes extraordinary measures to protect her family.

Crouse and Will Joines co-direct the feature after previously collaborating on short film “Propagation.” Principal photography for “Dust” will start in late August, with Emmy winner Paulson also executive producing.
