Martin openly criticized House of the Dragon, HBO's Game of Thrones prequel show, expressing an especial amount of concern over how the series is deviating from its source material: his book Fire & Blood. In response, HBO dropped a surprise episode of its House of the Dragon podcast where showrunner Ryan Condal talked through why he changed certain things from the book. Yes, the author of Fire & Blood and the man running the TV adaptation are in a shadow feud. I didn't expect this but I am, at minimum, entertained now that it's happening.

They've just released a breakdown of some of the effects work they did for season 2, which includes shots of Baela Targaryen's dragon Moondancer, the Wall, the towering buildings of King's Landing, Jacaerys Velaryon's dragon Vermax, and the huge dragon Silverwing.

Very few people are having a good time living in Westeros during “House of the Dragon” Season 2 but Tom Bennett is glad Ulf the White is one of them.

Bennett told TheWrap that his character’s immediate clashes with the royalty of Dragonstone comes because Ulf’s “one of the few characters that ever smiles let alone laughs.”

“Ulf sticks out like a sore thumb,” he said. “I’m definitely enjoying it because I know the other actors would love to do what I get to do, but they don’t. They have to be prim and proper and have to say the correct things to the queen and have deference. I don’t have to do any of that.”

That’s up 14% from the Season 2 premiere night, which garnered 7.8 million viewers. However, it is down from the audience size for the first season finale of “House of the Dragon” in 2022.

After premiering with 10 million viewers in June 2022, “House of the Dragon” Season 1 hit its peak with Episode 2, reaching 10.2 million. Exact data was not made available for Episodes 3-9, but Episode 10 closed the season with 9.3 million viewers.

Warner Bros. Discovery attributed the season opener declines to a drop in linear viewing, as fewer viewers now watch on HBO’s cable channel. But on the flip side, the conglom reports that Sunday’s “House of the Dragon” finale has now led to the biggest streaming day ever for Max, both in the U.S.

And after the events that happened in episode 7 regarding all the dragons that were claimed by their respective dragon riders, this hidden detail is actually setting the stakes really high for the final episode.

After a botched attempt to bond Steffon Darklyn with Seasmoke, the penultimate episode saw as Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) flew off after news arrived that the dragon was seen with a new rider. Addam of Hull (Clinton Liberty) sat atop Laenor’s old dragon and quickly bent the knee for Team Black.

Upon learning that the dragonseeds need not necessarily be highborn, Rhaenyra put out the call in King’s Landing for all bastards with Valyrian blood to come to Dragonstone and attempt to bond with one of the remaining dragons. The ones who come find the Sowing to be a bloody affair — until finally, the queen has some luck.

This means that many of the characters we’ve gotten to know thus far, Prince Jacaerys (Harry Collett), Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), Ser Criston (Fabian Frankel), and more, will hit the road to recruit nobles like college football coaches in need of a star quarterback.

“People have to curry favor with the other lords and figure out who’s on what team,” House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal told Den of Geek. “It’s nice because instead of just introducing 18 new characters, we follow characters who we already know going to these new places and meeting new people.”

The HBO Original drama series House of the Dragon has been renewed for a third season, ahead of the launch of the second season debuting Sunday, June 16 (9:00-10:00 p.m. Et/Pt) on HBO and streaming on Max.

The news is not a surprise. House of the Dragon creator George R.R. Martin teased in December 2023 that he was already working with the writing team on Seasons 3 and 4 of the fantasy drama.
