Attended the Rheinische Akademie in Cologne, graduating as a "state-certified business economist". Second-chance Abitur. Studied law at the University of Cologne, passing the first and second state law examinations in 1988 and 1991 respectively.
Has worked as a lawyer since 1991.
Member of the Board of the Verein gegen Vergessen - für Demokratie e. V. (Association against Forgetting - for Democracy), from 2000 to 2006 member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future.
