The A Simple Favor 2 director recently gave an update on the sequel to his 2018 dark crime comedy starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, which is set during a destination wedding in Capri, Italy, where murder ensues.

“I’m really excited about it,” he told Radio Times. “I’m in the middle of editing right now, and we did a test screening of my first cut last week, and it played through the roof. We scored really high. So it works. It seems to work, which is nice. And now I’m just fine tuning, but I’m really excited about it. And basically everybody came back for it.”

When a sequel to Paul Feig’s “A Simple Favor” was officially greenlit earlier this year with Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick returning, it was revealed that, instead of a theatrical release, the movie would go straight to streaming. And, according to the director, that decision was made simply because Amazon MGM proved they both wanted it and would support it.

The first film, distributed by Lionsgate in 2018, centered on Mommy Vlogger Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick) who gets caught up in a mystery when her new best friend Emily Nelson (Lively) suddenly goes missing after asking Stephanie to pick up her son. What follows is a story of murder, attempted murder, even faking a death, and with the added draw of “Crazy Rich Asians” star Henry Golding, fans loved it enough to want a sequel.

Natasha Rothwell, star, creator and executive producer of Hulu’s new comedy series “How To Die Alone,” plays Mel, a down-on-her-luck 30-something who never gave herself a real shot at living.

Though Mel works at an airport, she is too afraid to fly and ultimately too afraid to start living. After a near-death experience crashing an airport cart, Mel realized that it’s up to her to change her own life.

A Simple Favour did decent business relative to its outlay in 2018, grossing $97m worldwide on a $20m budget. Paul Feig directed the darkly comic mystery about a vlogger (Anna Kendrick) who investigates the disappearance of her elegant (and enigmatic) new best friend (Blake Lively).

A sequel has been in development for years; Simon Brew spoke to Feig about the first film on the Film Stories podcast in 2018 and discussed the sequel when Feig was our guest at a live podcast recording in 2022.

So starts “Miller’s Girl,” a drama-slash-psychological thriller that serves more so as an indictment of modern multilayered sexual politics than an (as marketed) after school special. As our lead character Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega) says, “longing” to experience something is the most dangerous force there is, and for Cairo, that longing culminates in a misguided crush and a politicized heartbreak with a professor (Martin Freeman).

High school student Cairo enrolls in a creative writing class taught by frustrated novelist Jonathan Miller (Freeman), who immediately takes a liking to her after spotting that she has a copies of both his debut novel and Henry Miller’s salacious works. Written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, “Miller’s Girl” plays on the titular Mr. Miller and the real-life author Miller himself, with Cairo’s compulsion to impress and find solace in her teacher further radicalized by taking on...

“Miller’s Girl,” about a relationship that develops between a wise-beyond-her-years teenager and her intellectually undernourished teacher, feels like catnip for the circular discourse of Film Twitter, but it’s hard to tell where a study of post-#MeToo power dynamics will land with moviegoers in the real world.

Written, produced and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, the film is both impressively erudite and unrelentingly self-aware, a combination it bravely attempts but doesn’t quite fully balance. But Jenna Ortega’s movie-star confidence in the title role more than eclipses Martin Freeman’s shoe-leather character acting, a perhaps inevitable outcome given the age and gender politics exercised in its story — but not necessarily one that gets at something truly interesting.

Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman find themselves embroiled in a heated student-teacher dynamic in the trailer for the upcoming feature Miller’s Girl.

Lionsgate is set to release the film from writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett on Jan. 26 after it debuts at the Palm Springs International Film Festival earlier that month. Ortega stars as Cairo, a promising writer who navigates her complicated relationship with Jonathan Miller (Freeman) after his assignment leads to tension.

“Why did you write this?” Freeman asks in the drama’s trailer. “This is inappropriate.” This leads Ortega to respond, “‘Write what you know,’ is what you said.”

Exclusive: Jade Halley Bartlett’s Miller’s Girl starring Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman will make its world premiere at the 2024 Palm Springs Film Festival before it hits theaters next month.

Lionsgate and Point Grey Pictures are behind the movie, which marks the feature writing and directing debut for Bartlett, who wrote the original play in 2011 and adapted it into a screenplay that landed on the 2016 Black List. Miller’s Girl will premiere at the festival January 11 and land in cinemas beginning Friday, January 26.

Ortega, Freeman and Bartlett are set to attend the Palm Springs screening at the festival, which runs January 4-15. They will be a part of the fest’s Talking Pictures program that features post-screening Q&As with cast and creatives.

Jennifer Garner, Ed Helms, Brady Noon and Emma Myers were a happy family on the red carpet at the premiere for their new Netflix movie Family Switch.

The quartet, who plays a family in the new movie, were joined by director McG and a cute dog while posing for photos outside AMC The Grove 14 on Wednesday (November 29) in Los Angeles.

But Netflix is hoping audiences are ready for a new 2023 version of the tried-and-true premise with Garner and Ed Helms in starring roles.

Jennifer Garner delighted audiences with her contribution to the body-swapping movie world, 13 Going On 30, which was her own version of Big.
