There are some filmmakers who stamp their personality on their work from the outset. With a distinctive blend of horror and humour present in Neal Dhand’s dialogue and shot choices, together with the grainy character and soft hues of Charles Ackley Anderson’s cinematography, Dark My Light announces itself quickly, sets out its stall, and proceeds to deliver a story which, though it shifts gears several times and moves between genres, still achieves a tonal consistency which helps it stick in the memory.
There’s a scream – perhaps roar would be a better term – over the openings credits which is reminiscent of one delivered by Ray Wise in Twin Peaks, and viewers familiar with that will find themselves shuddering. Others may not fully take it in, or may be confused by it, because it doesn’t seem to fit the character of police detective Mitchell Morse (Albert Jones).

Writer-director Jamie Sisley’s Stay Awake, a feature-length expansion of the filmmaker’s short of the same name from 2015, looks at its serious subject matter through a maudlin lens. The film’s title refers explicitly to Michelle (Chrissy Metz), whose opioid addiction routinely finds her nodding off in the backseat of the family car on the way to the hospital, as teenage sons Ethan (Wyatt Oleff) and Derek (Fin Argus) sing notable songs to try and keep her conscious. Across repetitive, overwritten scenes that are intent on verbalizing the film’s themes and ideas, Sisley struggles to find a tonal range that might reflect a more complex set of emotions and as such elevated his film above a glorified Afterschool Special.
More metaphorically, the film’s title refers to teenage conscientiousness about extricating oneself from the minimal career expectations of small-town America. When Ethan gets into Brown University and Derek...

Netflix’s Mindhunter explored the inner working of real-life serial killers and their minds. But as the series progressed into its second season, Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) get involved in a series of kidnappings and murders of young black boys in Atlanta. While Mindhunter Season 2 ended with the supposed perpetrator of the crimes, there was a loose end of another serial killer connected to the Atlanta murders.
Holden learns there is more to the Atlanta murders in ‘Mindhunter’ Season 2
While in Atlanta, Holden is coerced into listening to a series of kidnappings of young black boys in the neighborhood. While many are missing persons, many of them have ended up murdered. He learns from one of the detectives who used to be in charge that they could not find a link between the victims.

Having recently wrapped shooting in upstate New York, the producers of Jamie Sisley’s debut feature “Stay Awake,” a dramatic family comedy about opioid addiction, have revealed key cast details.
In the film, Emmy and two-time Golden Globe Award Nominee Chrissy Metz (“This is Us”) plays Michelle, a loving and well-meaning mother of two whose struggle with prescription drug addiction is adversely affecting her entire family. Wyatt Oleff plays Ethan, the quick-witted younger brother about to leave the nest, and Fin Argus (“Clouds”) plays Derek, the eldest sibling who’s desires to care for his family are keeping him from moving forward with his own life.
Set in a small community in Virginia, “Stay Awake” confronts a serious and common problem facing many rural families across the country without dwelling explicitly on the negatives, instead choosing to address them with a very human mix of humor and levity.

The new season of Netflix’s hit series “Mindhunter” dropped Aug. 16, and this year the series finds FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) taking on the Atlanta child murders, which unfolded between 1979 and 1981, with 28 African Americans slaughtered in Georgia. No one has ever been charged for the murders.
According to a new feature in the Los Angeles Times, Netflix has confirmed that the “Mindhunter” team did not consult the families of the victims in the killings, two of whom feature prominently in the season — Camille Bell, the mother of nine-year-old Yusuf Bell, who was found dead in 1979, and Venus Taylor, the mother of 12-year-old Angel Lenair, who was found dead in 1980. The investigation is currently being reopened, and with the new attention the issues of racial injustice inherent to the case are coming to the forefront.

The “Mindhunter” Season 2 trailer dropped Monday, giving fans of the Netflix thriller series a slightly closer look at the show’s version of Charles Manson. Except you might not want to look too closely at him, seeing as it appears he’s sensitive to the fact he’s small — “like, really small.”
The teaser shows FBI agents Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) interviewing serial killer Edmund Kemper (Cameron Britton) as they gather information in an attempt to solve the Atlanta Child Murders, a series of killings between 1979 and 1981 that targeted African-American children, teenagers and adults. He advises them on how best to deal with their next killer interview: Manson (played Damon Herriman).
“One more thing, Manson is small, like, really small — try not to stare,” he says in a voiceover, as we see Manson’s figure start to come into focus in the shadows of a prison.

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor is regularly one of the busiest actors working, often having two or three of his movies being released within months of each other, as is the case this year, with Salmon Fishing in the Yemen being his third movie released this year. Based on the best-selling novel by Paul Towdry, it was adapted by Oscar winner Simon Beaufoy ( Slumdog Millionare , The Full Monty ) and directed by Lasse Halström ( Dear John , Chocolat ), with McGregor playing Dr. Alfred Jones, a government fisheries scientist persuaded into helping Emily Blunt's enthusiastic rep of a wealthy sheik into trying to figure out a way of making salmon fishing possible in the arid environment of the Middle East.
