You know what they say: Two is a trend. When most audiences first met Canadian rising star Gabriel Labelle, it was with Steven Spielberg’s 2022 “The Fabelmans,” in which the beloved American auteur told his own semi-autobiographical origin story, with Labelle starring as his cinematic avatar, budding filmmaker Sammy Fabelman. Kind of a crazy introduction to Hollywood, right?
But while Labelle relished the role — and earned plenty of acclaim for it, including winning Best Young Performer at the 28th Critics’ Choice Awards and the award for Breakthrough Performance from the National Board of Review (an accolade he shared with “Till” standout Danielle Deadwyler) — he was also eager to embrace original films. That included Adam Carter Rehmeier’s well-regarded coming-of-age charmer “Snack Shack,” a ’90s-set comedy that helped scratch Labelle’s itch to fully craft a character (and a part he won while still in production on “The Fabelmans”).
But true...

It’s an often-touted cliche that a great way to win an Oscar is for a performer to portray a real-life person. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor earlier this year for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” Jessica Chastain took home Best Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Rami Malek won Best Actor in 2019 for his depiction of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
It’s curious, then, that Best Actress has often been rewarded to performers playing fictional characters rather than real people. Over the past decade, 28 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning out of 10. Here’s the complete breakdown.
Two out of 2024’s Best Actress nominees were nominated for playing fictional people. The others were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”). However,...

Even though The Doors was written off as a dud back in 1991, let’s get real, Val Kilmer’s portrayal of Jim Morrison was nothing short of mesmerizing. If that film had dropped today, Kilmer’s performance would’ve had Oscar gold practically falling from the sky.
Val Kilmer in The Doors / Credits: TriStar Pictures
He dove headfirst into the role of Morrison with such raw intensity and flair that it’s surprising the audience at the time didn’t give him more credit. Kilmer’s portrayal was a powerhouse performance that definitely deserves way more recognition than it received!

Rumors have it, that Val Kilmer went so deep into his role as Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s The Doors that he needed therapy just to escape the character’s clutches. Kilmer didn’t just play Morrison, he became him. A...

Lydia Peckham, Roimata Fox & Branscombe Richmond Join Amazon MGM’s Action Comedy ‘The Wrecking Crew’
Exclusive: Lydia Peckham (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Roimata Fox (Chief of War) and Branscombe Richmond (Renegade) have joined the cast of The Wrecking Crew, Amazon MGM Studios’ action comedy from Blue Beetle helmer Ángel Manuel Soto.
Details as to the trio’s roles are under wraps. As previously announced, Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa lead the ensemble, which also includes Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Frankie Adams, Miyavi, Stephen Root, and Morena Baccarin.
Set to enter production in New Zealand in October, The Wrecking Crew centers on a pair of half-brothers — one, a loose-cannon cop (Momoa), and the other, a disciplined Navy Seal (Bautista). After 20-odd years of bad blood, the duo must work together to unravel the conspiracy behind their father’s murder in Hawaii.

James Bond. Benoit Blanc. Joe Bang. These characters have become synonymous with Daniel Craig’s career. Now, Craig adds William Lee, a drug-addicted gay American expat, to that list in Luca Guadagnino’s sexually charged and fantastical love story, “Queer.” The film made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, where Guadagnino and co-star Drew Starkey participated in a post-screening Q&a.
Craig’s sensitive and transformative portrayal of a emotionally fractured man could be his greatest performance yet. It might even land him at the center of the Oscar race for best actor — if the more conservative Academy voters aren’t squeamish about the film’s sexually graphic scenes or put off by its non-traditional narrative.
Based on William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel, “Queer” follows Lee, an American expat living a life of near isolation, save for brief encounters with a small group of acquaintances. When...

2013 indie darling Short Term 12 managed to collect a number of notable talents before their careers reached another level, and Agatha All Along executive producer Mary Livanos happens to have her own Marvel-related connection to it all.
Besides names like Rami Malek, Lakeith Stanfield and Kaitlyn Dever, Short Term 12 marked the beginning of filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton’s four-time collaboration with Brie Larson, which includes her cameo as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the former’s MCU debut, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Well, it turns out that Livanos was a Pa on Cretton’s Los Angeles-based Short Term 12 set in 2012, and she would eventually climb the ranks to become Larson’s EP on The Marvels (2023).
Prior to The Marvels, Livanos made a name for herself as co-executive producer on Marvel Studios’ most successful streaming series, WandaVision. And together with creator Jac Schaeffer, the duo were...

Queen’s founding guitarist Brian May revealed that he had a “minor stroke” last week that left him unable to use his left arm for a while. But the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is recovering and assured the faithful that the episode is not career-threatening.
“The good news is that I can play guitar,” May said in a video shared on his website on Wednesday (watch it below). “It was in some doubt because that little health hiccup that I mentioned happened about a week ago, and what they called it was a minor stroke. And all of a sudden, out of the blue, I didn’t have any control over this arm, so it was a little scary.”

When Robbie Williams told an interviewer that he felt like a performing monkey, he didn’t mean it literally. But that’s exactly how “The Greatest Showman” director Michael Gracey interprets the remark in “Better Man,” an off-the-wall musical biopic that surely would have seemed banal — as opposed to downright bananas — had it featured a flesh-and-blood actor in the Robbie Williams role.
Gracey takes audiences through all the expected beats of Williams’ career, from his breakthrough as a member of Take That to his record-breaking solo concert at Knebworth, but does so with a CG chimpanzee standing in for the Britpop bad boy. Against all odds, that gimmick works, distinguishing the project from so many other cookie-cutter pop-star hagiographies. If you want to fawn over this boy-band backup singer-turned-solo superstar for four hours, check out the “Robbie Williams” doc series on Netflix. But if you want to see a chimp doing coke with Oasis,...

Laurence Fishburne isn’t looking to top himself when it comes to signing up for sci-fi projects like his new movie Slingshot.
The Oscar-nominated actor continues to be among the most in-demand performers in Hollywood and has starred in a wide range of features running the gamut in genre and scope. Hitting theaters this weekend from Bleecker Street is Slingshot, featuring Fishburne as Captain Franks, who leads a multi-year mission to Saturn’s moon Titan to obtain needed natural resources. Meanwhile, the voyage gets tense as fellow astronaut John (Casey Affleck) begins to lose his sense of reality. (The plot involves a major twist that won’t be spoiled here.)
Chief among the previous sci-fi projects in which Fishburne has made his mark is, of course, the Matrix trilogy, in addition to assorted other titles like Event Horizon (1997), Predators (2010) and Passengers (2016). Fishburne’s upcoming releases include other features that fall into that genre,...

Jeremy Allen White says his Bruce Springsteen prep has involved a lot of YouTube rabbit holes — with some advice from the real-life rockstar peppered in.
White will play Springsteen in 20th Century and Disney’s Deliver Me From Nowhere. News of the movie’s production picked up earlier this spring, and the star of The Bear is now deep in preparation for the legendary role.
“I’m really lucky that there’s sort of a team of folks now in place to help young actors portray rock stars,” White told GQ. “I’ve got a really talented group of people helping me train vocally, musically, to get ready for this thing.”
In recent years, Austin Butler portrayed Elvis in Elvis, Rami Malek played Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, Naomi Ackie played Whitney Houston in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Kingsley Ben-Adir played Bob Marley in Bob Marley: One Love.

Fargo is one of the most brilliant and weird series that has probably ever been made. While the series is brilliant and gets better with each season, the wait between each season is very long because the creator Noah Hawley is attached to many projects, and he doesn’t have much time to create new seasons every year. So, if you love the surreal humor, psychological thriller, and crime drama aspects of Fargo here are some similar shows you should check out next.

“Succession” star Kieran Culkin is poised to make the journey from the Emmys to the Oscars thanks to his role in the red-hot film, “A Real Pain.” From Searchlight Pictures, “A Real Pain” is written and directed by actor Jesse Eisenberg, who made his debut as writer-director in 2022 with the acclaimed “When You Finish Saving The World.” This one follows Eisenberg and Culkin as a pair of mismatched cousins who tour through Poland in an attempt to honor their grandmother. Their journey is threatened to be derailed, however, when old tensions and family history, rear their head once more.

"Barney Miller" may not be one of the most talked-about sitcoms of the '70s these days, but perhaps it should be. The NYPD-set show was in some ways the "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" of its time, a socially conscious, funny series that set its action squarely in the precinct where members of the public came to ask the authorities for help -- or get arrested by them.
Like most shows about cops, it has its inherent biases, and some parts of the show have aged poorly. But "Barney Miller" is also surprisingly progressive at times. As TV historian Matt Baume writes in his queer sitcom history "Hi Honey, I'm Homo," the show broke new ground for gay characters on TV, facing off against network censors to portray New York's Greenwich Village neighborhood (post-Stonewall!) with authenticity and diversity.
Only two seasons of "Barney Miller" are currently available to rent digitally in the U.

The Holdovers breakout lead Dominic Sessa is reportedly in negotiations to star in an Anthony Bourdain biopic.
If you’ve ever had the opportunity to listen to the late Anthony Bourdain talk about food, and more specifically, the way his life was connected to food (ever since his first oyster as a young boy) there’s something undeniably cinematic about it. From the tough kitchens he worked in when he started out to the immense pressure he faced as he rose to the very top.
It’s a fascinating setup that we’ve seen used across media, from reality TV shows like Hell’s Kitchen or an endless assortment of Netflix shows to dramas like The Bear... but it’s something that cinema has sometimes struggled with. In recent years we’ve seen some excellent examples in the genre such as Boiling Point and The Menu.

Colin Hanks has joined the bone-crunching, skin-splitting cast of Nobody 2, Universal’s sequel to the 2021 surprise hit produced by 87North.
Bob Odenkirk is reprising his role as mild-mannered family man who is secretly a former government assassin, while Sharon Stone is cast as the stone-cold villainess of the piece. Connie Nielsen and Christopher Lloyd are reprising their roles of the family man’s wife and father, respectively.
Plot details are being kept secret, but sources say that Hanks will play a corrupt sheriff with none too nice ambitions.
Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto, known for his horror and action fare such as May the Devil Take You and segments of the V/H/S installments, is directing the feature, which shoots this month. The screenplay is by Derek Kolstad, Aaron Rabin, Odenkirk and Umair Aleem.
Odenkirk is also producing the action thriller, joining Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, who are producing via their Universal-based 87North.

Fresh off the back of a set of better-than-expected financials, Disney is seeking to splash the cash in Europe.
The Mouse House plans to spend at least $5B on blockbuster movies and TV shows in the continent over the next five years, according to its Emea boss Jan Koeppen, who was interviewed in the Ft this morning.
Set in context, however, the spend won’t be much of an increase on the past five years and could amount to less. In June, Koeppen revealed that Disney had spent around £3.5B ($4.5B) on production in just the UK over the last five years.
The success of superhero movie Deadpool & Wolverine, which has just topped $900M global at the box office, is a driving force, contributing to an improved set of results that also saw streamer Disney+ make a profit for the first time, ahead of schedule. “The genre seems to...

Upcoming horror film adaptation Until Dawn has added a memorable face from the videogame on which it’s based: one Peter Stormare.
It’s been around six months since we learned that Sony is developing a film version of Until Dawn, the 2015 ‘cabin in the woods’-style horror game that impressed players with its branching narrative paths and cinematic visuals. Screen Gems is co-producing with PlayStation Productions and Shazam! helmer David F Sandberg is on board to direct. Gary Dauberman, the screenwriter behind such horror mainstays as It, Annabelle and The Nun has written the script and Screen Gems has described it as an ‘R-rated love letter to the horror genre, focusing on an ensemble cast.’
The videogame cast featured plenty of up and coming stars who would go on to do great things: Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek appeared, as did Scream 6′s Hayden Panettiere and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Brett Dalton,...

Exclusive: Holt McCallany has been tapped to star in the new Netflix family drama series The Waterfront, written and executive produced by Kevin Williamson.
Inspired by true events, The Waterfront dives into the flawed Buckley family as their attempts to retain control of their crumbling North Carolina fishing empire drive them to increasingly dangerous means to keep themselves afloat.
McCallany will play the patriarch Harlan Buckley who has built up the Buckley fishery business with his dad, even veering into some illegal territory in the 1980s. Since his two heart attacks, Harlan hasn’t changed his lifestyle, but his absence from the family business left it in the hands of his wife, Vicki, and his son, Cane — whose desperate, foolish decisions have left Harlan with no choice but to take the reins once again. “Battlestar Galactica” will not chronicle its next chapter on Peacock. A planned reboot for the classic sci-fi hit is no longer in development at the streamer, an insider close to the decision-making told TheWrap.
The project had been in development since 2019, helmed by Sam Esmail (“Mr. Robot”). It was never officially picked up to series at Peacock, and though no plot details were revealed, the show was set to be set in the same timeline as the popular 2003 series.
The news comes months after “The Sinner” EP Derek Simonds was tapped to be writer, executive producer and showrunner. The reboot will now be shopped around to other outlets by its production company, UCP, with whom Esmail has an overall deal. The project was in development with UCP, Esmail Corp and Chad Hamilton.
“Battlestar Galactica” was first introduced in the ’70s as a single-season show starring Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict and Lorne Greene.

Christian Bale made his name synonymous with quality movies of all genres. These include the comedy horror American Psycho, The Dark Knight superhero trilogy and the drama Ford v Ferrari.
Nevertheless, the accomplished actor has some failures in his portfolio too. The biggest one is his 2022 movie that both underperformed at the box office and earned a shameful critical score of 32% on Rt, but, surprisingly, entered HBO’s global chart this weekend.
Set in the 1930s, this film follows three friends - a doctor (played by Bale), a nurse and a lawyer - who witness a murder of a general and become suspects themselves.
The more they explore what happens around them, the more they delve into one of the most shocking political conspiracies of the United States, the so-called Business Plot.
Even though this thriller is based on real-life events, it appears to be not realistic, but rather written by AI.

Denzel Washington has made a name for himself as one of the most talented and respected actors in Hollywood. Having several Oscar nominations and wins under his name, he has certainly become an icon and an inspiration for many newcomers in the industry. While he has been a part of several critically acclaimed works, one of his most notable has to be Training Day, alongside Ethan Hawke.

What happens when Rami Malek, Denzel Washington, and Jared Leto get together? A movie like 2021’s The Little Things is born. Although the crime thriller was not as successful of a venture, neither a commercial nor critically successful, it did bring together the three incredible actors, resulting in some hilarious off-screen moments.
Denzel Washington [Credit: Flight | Paramount Pictures]One particular moment from their many interactions has recently resurfaced on the internet, featuring the three actors being asked where they keep their ‘Oscars’ trophies. And Malek’s witty 2-word response left Washington in fits of laughter.

Gangs, intrigues and elaborate frauds — this is what we love about 90s crime flicks. We bet you have seen at least one of them, maybe Martin Scorcese’s Goodfellas (1990), Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992) or, maybe, the Coens’ Fargo (1996).
However, there is a unique crime thriller that was unfairly forgotten by the audience. Yes, it’s quite clichéd and relies too much on the already outdated visuals, but it’s still a must-watch for its representation of the 1990s and even The Matrix’s techno vibe.
The film’s plot revolves around Dade aka Zero Cool, a teenage hacker who was accused of crashing over lots of Wall Street computers at the age of only 11. Seven years later, he ends up involved in a risky theft of millions of dollars from a powerful corporation.
This time Zero Cool teams up with other high school hackers, including Kate aka Acid Burn...

Former X-Men star Alan Cumming dubbed the X2 sequel the “gayest film I’ve ever done.” The comments came during a promotion for the reality competition series The Traitor, which Cumming hosts in his home nation of Scotland. Season three is set to feature Dylan Efron, Sam Asghari and Tom Sandoval.
Cumming, 59, told Entertainment Weekly, “It’s got a queer director, lots of queer actors in it. I love the fact that something so mainstream and so in the comic book world is so queer.”
The Scottish actor added that the film’s premise is “an allegory about queerness.” He explained the characters’ need to hide their powers and true identity to protect themselves from the world is something that queer people understand and relate to.

No Time to Die is like a swan song for Daniel Craig’s incredible run as James Bond, taking the audience on a luxurious & suspenseful tour of one of the world’s most dapper spies in motion pictures. Could there be a more stirring mix of action and deeper emotion than the finale of Craig’s iconic portrayal that has redefined the quintessence of 007?

Disney landed at the CineEurope trade show on Wednesday riding wave of goodwill from across the industry thanks to the outstanding success of its latest release “Inside Out 2.”
Before their slate presentation to European exhibitors on Wednesday — the final show from the major studios — the Pixar sequel had already shattered records with a global opening weekend total of $295 million, the biggest opening of the year to date, the biggest ever for an animated movie worldwide and the highest animated opening internationally of all time (at $140.8 million).
But as Disney’s head of global theatrical distribution Tony Chambers revealed on stage, the more recent “Inside Out 2” figures gave the company — which had been receiving praise all week from the other studios in their presentations — even more reason to smile, the worldwide total now sitting at $380 million thanks to Tuesday’s record breaking box office.

Russell Crowe’s filmography may look a little odd to the average cinephile. From “L.A. Confidential” to “Thor: Love and Thunder,” from winning an Oscar for “Gladiator” to starring in not one but two exorcism films – Crowe seems to have done it all, from high to lowbrow.
And according to the star, that’s the whole point of having a lasting career: To pick and choose what one wants to do regardless of how prestige (or not) the project may be.
“I’ve been unreasonably happy for most of my life. I know that bothers some people, but that’s just not my problem. I pursue creatively and artistically what I want to do, and I have done that for probably about 35 years, you know? I do it unapologetically,” Crowe told GQ UK. “And my choices are always freaking people out.”

With the recent announcement of the Until Dawn film adaptation, we’ve officially reached the point of film adaptations of video games that were already essentially playable movies from the jump. And given the gameplay of Until Dawn, director David F. Sandberg is going to have an array of both interesting and difficult decisions to make in order to pull off a successful adaptation.
Supermassive Games has often described its portfolio of choice-based narrative video games like Until Dawn and The Quarry as essentially putting players in the director’s seat of a horror film and allowing their decisions to shape the story. It’s no surprise in the current film environment that Until Dawn is getting the film adaptation treatment–video game adaptations, specifically genre games, are currently basking in audience fervor (see the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie and HBO’s The Last of Us). Troy Baker is one of the most prominent voice actors in video games, having voiced Joel Miller in The Last of Us and Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite. Baker was part of Hideo Kojima’s final game for Konami, Metal Gear Solid V, playing Revolver Ocelot. The lead voice actor in the game was replaced by a film actor. When Baker was asked about it, he shared that he wasn’t worried about film actors taking over video game roles.

David Hayter, who played Solid Snake in the previous installments, was removed from Metal Gear Solid V without notice. He was replaced by Kiefer Sutherland as Kojima believed he could also bring the subtle facial movements required for the character.

Charlie Hunnam is set to lead Ed Brubaker’s Prime Video graphic novel series Criminal. He joins the previously announced series regular cast of Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins and Kadeem Hardison.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Hunnam stars as the protagonist, Leo, a brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Other crooks think he’s a coward, especially compared to his father Tommy, who went to jail for murdering the most feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.
As Deadline previously revealed exclusively, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden are confirmed to direct the first four episodes. The series is executive produced by Brubaker and Jordan Harper, alongside Phillips,...

Mads Mikkelsen...Cillian Murphy...Giancarlo Esposito...by now, we know you've seen the same old names suggested for the McU's Doctor Doom time and time again.
With The Fantastic Four fast approaching and rumours swirling that the Latverian dictator will appear in a post-credits scene, all signs point to us meeting the new Victor Von Doom as soon as next year. However, none of the popular decisions listed above seem like a perfect fit to us.
In this feature, we've rounded up several alternative suggestions who would each be suitably terrifying and formidable as the McU's Doom. Crucially, they're not the names you'd necessarily expect to see.
To find out who we think could square off with Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing as a villain capable of being the next Saga's big bad, click on the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

Stephen J. Rivele, who shared an Oscar nomination for the screenplay for Oliver Stone’s Nixon and worked on such other biopics as Michael Mann’s Ali, Agnieszka Holland’s Copying Beethoven and Don Cheadle’s Miles Ahead, has died. He was 75.
Rivele had heart issues and died May 17 at his home in Pasadena, California, his son Eli Bocek-Rivele told The Hollywood Reporter.
Rivele wrote on Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star Is Born and did an early draft for another 2018 release, Bohemian Rhapsody, starring Rami Malek as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
He also handled uncredited rewrites on the baseball movie Moneyball (2011) and All Eyez on Me (2017), about Tupac Shakur.
Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson enjoyed a 30-year screenwriting partnership. They worked together on Nixon (1995), starring Anthony Hopkins; Ali (2001), starring Will Smith; Copying Beethoven (2006), starring Ed Harris; Miles Ahead (2015), the Miles Davis biopic that Cheadle directed and starred in; Pawn Sacrifice...

The storytelling process often blurs lines, enabling creators to weave their magic subconsciously, and this holds true for one brutal Henry Cavill scene from Man of Steel. Indeed, the film has intriguingly likely influenced an iconic X-Men ‘97 finale moment involving Rogue, as revealed by Beau DeMayo. Well, a few weeks ago, we got to know about Bastion’s genesis in Tolerance Is Extinction – Part 1, which actually sent waves of nostalgia and surprise through the DC fandom.

Further enriching this, the X-Men ‘97 showrunner, through the candid windows of X, recently admitted that the finale beat of Rogue punching Bastion—a flourish of raw “emotion” rather than narrative need—was a ‘subconscious’ homage to Clark’s fervent defense of his earthly mother.
