Dancing with the Stars has been a stalwart of ABC’s programming for 33 seasons. Throughout its history, the series has paired professional ballroom dancers with celebrities to teach them complicated techniques to score judge points. But has the show drifted too far from its roots to be called a ballroom dance competition series?
‘Dancing with the Stars’ was once a strict ballroom competition series
Upon the series’ debut in 2005, season 1 featured only six celebrities and pros, and the dances were strictly ballroom. The series focused on six styles of traditional ballroom dancing: cha-cha, waltz, rumba, quickstep, jive, tango, and salsa.
As the series progressed, it added Argentine tango, Viennese waltz, foxtrot, paso doble, Latin, and samba. Judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli held the pros to a high standard. Inaba was the only judge who had no formal ballroom training.

It’s been six months beloved judge Len Goodman passed, but Dancing with the Stars isn’t ready to say goodbye just yet.
Though Tuesday’s theme was Most Memorable Year, the Week 5 episode was really meant to honor Goodman, who died from prostate cancer in April at the age of 78. After airing a sentimental package featuring past pros talking about what an honor it was to be both complimented and criticized by Goodman, the episode then featured a dance tribute to “Moon River” that was waltzed to perfection by current pros and past faves Kym Johnson, Anna Trebunskaya, Karina Smirnoff, Edyta Sliwinska, Tony Dovolani, Louis van Amstel, Maks Chmerkovskiy and Mark Ballas.
It ended with the troupe gesturing to an empty middle chair on the judges’ dais. Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli wept.

Reality TV history was made when Amber Riley was awarded the Golden Mask Trophy on “The Masked Singer” Wednesday night. The actress became the first celebrity to win both the singing competition and “Dancing With the Stars.” She took home the Mirrorball Trophy with her partner Derek Hough on Season 17 in 2013.
Riley was revealed to be Harp, who was the first performer of the season and the last one standing. Her song selections throughout the weeks included “Perfect” by Pink, “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston, “Thank You For Being a Friend” from “The Golden Girls,” “About Damn Time” by Lizzo, “The Edge of Glory” by Lady Gaga and “Gravity” by John Mayer. She defeated the Lambs in the finale, who were revealed to be singing trio Wilson Phillips.

It took a while, but Derek Hough finally has some company and it’s fitting that it’s from his Bff. Thanks to his win on Monday’s Season 31 finale with Charli D’Amelio, Mark Ballas has joined Hough as the only pros with at least three Mirrorball trophies on “Dancing with the Stars.”
Hough, of course, holds the record at six wins, so Ballas still has some ways to go, but this was a big hump to get over as a third win has been elusive for the pros. Before Monday, six pros had been stuck at two victories: Ballas, Cheryl Burke (who retired on the finale), Julianne Hough, Kym Johnson, Peta Murgatroyd and Val Chmerkovskiy. Julianne Hough and Johnson have long left the show, but Ballas, Burke and Chmerkovskiy have frequently made finals over the years only to come up short in the quest for three. Chermkovskiy and his...

Reality TV history is on the line as two celebrities look to become the first entertainers to win both “Dancing With the Stars” and “The Masked Singer.” It’s certainly a possibility for Wayne Brady, a Season 31 finalist on “DWTS” along with his partner Witney Carson. The “Let’s Make a Deal” host won Season 2 of “The Masked Singer” disguised as Fox in 2019. He will have to defeat Charli D’Amelio, Shangela and Gabby Windey to bookend his Golden Mask with a Mirrorball Trophy.

We can’t say with 100 certainty that Amber Riley is on the same trajectory, but it seems like a strong possibility. The former “Glee” star won Season 17 of “DWTS” alongside partner Derek Hough. “Masked Singer” fans have been speculating the dancing diva is belting out hits as Harp...

“Some people say, ‘I don’t know why I’m into cars,’ but for me, it was crystal clear,” says Robert Herjavec, one of the Sharks on ABC’s long-running Shark Tank, as he sits on the back of his Rolls-Royce Cullinan’s tailgating seats on a late summer morning, at a location he’d prefer not to disclose for safety purposes.
“I’m an immigrant. I came here with my dad and I’m an only child who escaped from a communist country [Yugoslavia], and we came to Canada with one suitcase and no money. The whole melodramatic story. A few years later — I must have been about 10 years old at the time, and I’m walking down the street with my dad and we see this thing coming down the road and I say to my dad, ‘What’s that?’ And my dad says,...
