Get ready to hug your physical DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K discs a little tighter, film fans – because while the age of streaming seemed to come with the promise of everything being available everywhere all at once, that has recently begun to give way to a less optimistic reality. After multiple HBO Max projects were dropped from that service – with no other home to view them on, and no physical release either – it now seems that Disney+ is following suit, with major series, documentaries and original movies set to be dropped from the service on 26 May. It is expected that this is being pursued as a cost-cutting measure, though the exact metrics and cost implications are unclear.
Among the projects leaving Disney+ one week today, according to Deadline, will be the likes of the recent Willow streaming series, sports drama sequel series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, the Turner & Hooch show,...

We’re finally getting some casting news about Noah Hawley’s highly anticipated “Alien” series, which means we’re that much closer to Xenomorph o’clock. TheWrap can confirm that “Pistol” and Don’t Worry Darling’s” Sydney Chandler has been cast in the upcoming sci-fi thriller.
Not much is known about the plot of this upcoming series, and no character information has been released. Chandler is expected to play one of the leads. Prior to starring in the sci-fi drama, Chandler is best known for starring as Chrissie Hynde in FX and Danny Boyle’s biographical drama about the Sex Pistols, “Pistol.” She also starred as Violet in Olivia Wile’s psychological thriller “Don’t Worry Darling.”
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report this story.

Netflix’s Resident Evil is kicking off a new era for the franchise on the small screen. After years of movie adaptations starring Milla Jovovich and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, the franchise is shifting gears to tell a story unlike any we’ve ever seen on the big screen or in the games. This new Resident Evil series ditches Chris and Claire Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, and Jill Valentine to tell a modern-day story about Albert Wesker and his family.
Starring the great Lance Reddick as the classic Resident Evil villain, the series not only gives us a complete reimagining of the character as a family man but also introduces us to his two teen daughters, Jade (Ella Balinska/Tamara Smart) and Billie (Adeline Rudolph/Siena Agudong), who have their own issues to deal with, like having to upend their whole lives to move with their father to...

The first attempt to dramatize the Sex Pistols saga came with the release of the Julien Temple’s movie The Great Rock and Roll Swindle in 1980, just two years after the band imploded. The farcical film tells the story from the perspective of manager Malcolm McLaren and is so cartoonish that parts of it are actually animated.
It was the start of a mini-industry of Sex Pistols retrospectives that told their story from every conceivable angle, including the Gary Oldman/Chloe Webb movie Sid and Nancy, the Julien Temple documentary...

John Lydon, the lead singer of the Sex Pistols, has lost a court case with his former band mates, drummer Paul Cook and guitarist Steve Jones, over the usage of the group’s songs in the upcoming Danny Boyle-directed TV series Pistol.
Lydon had wanted to block the band’s tracks from being used in the six-part FX program, which will chronicle the punk group’s rise to prominence. His lawyer claimed the project would show Lydon in “a hostile and unflattering light”, while the singer in court described the situation as “slave labor”.
However, Cook and Jones in turn sued Lydon for his efforts to veto the deal, claiming he had signed up to a “majority rule” agreement that allowed them to overrule any individual veto.
The High Court judge, Anthony Mann, ruled that the singer had “signed away his power” to control the songs and that the...

In her mom Ivana’s new memoir Raising Trump, Ivanka Trump describes what she refers to as her “punk phase.” It didn’t involve protesting, or blasting Dead Kennedys records in her room, or chartering a private jet to London to walk in the footsteps of the Sex Pistols and The Clash. When trailers often pop up as I search the sea that is the internet, I often will see some and think, "huh, that's a trailer". Other times I'll think, "wow, now, that's a trailer". And more often than not, I'll think, "great... another trailer for this friggin thing". Luckily, the trailer for How to Talk to Girls at Parties is nothing like I expected.
It stars Elle Fanning, the younger of the Fanning sisters as she is introduced to the world of punk... and the world of Earth. The trailer is very odd but I like what I'm seeing. It's visually beautiful and it features some great music. Elle Fanning looks like she might have landed a hit role for herself. Check out the trailer below. It's worth the two minutes of your life.

Recently, Dusty provided me a golden opportunity: in connection with the release of Three-Piece Suite -- a remastering of some compositions from Gentle Giant's first three albums -- their media team offered an interview with Derek Schulman, lead singer for the group, and now a high-level record company executive. Knowing my love of Gentle Giant, Dusty offered the interview to me. There was no constraint on content, only on the number of questions (an even dozen). So, with thanks to Anne Leighton (of Anne Leighton Media), who coordinated, here is my interview with one of progressive rock's most iconic figures, both as an artist and as a rep:
1. There has been a sort of minor resurgence of things Gentle Giant, including the induction of the band into the Portsmouth Hall of Fame, and the imminent release of Three-Piece Suite, a collection of compositions from the first three Gentle Giant albums,...

Alex Cox's Sid & Nancy is a classic amour fou romance plastered over the backdrop of London's emerging punk scene of the late '70s. The film is the approximately real-life story of the life and death of Sex Pistols' bassist Sid Vicious and his soulmate, a shrill caricature of a woman named Nancy Spungen and the simultaneous rise and fall of the Pistols. A lot can be said about the creative license Cox takes with the material, after all this was a well documented story and created a media frenzy when the Sex Pistols burst onto the scene between 1976 and 1978, but it is difficult to fault the filmmaker's attention to detail and craft in the final product. Cox was a student and aficionado...

This Japanese trailer for the feature film adaptation of Neil Gaiman's short story How To Talk To Girls At Parties is the first full trailer that I've seen for the movie. It looks like the story has made for a great and charming movie. It was directed by John Cameron Mitchell (Nurse Jackie) and has a great cast that includes Elle Fanning, Alex Sharp, Nicole Kidman, and Ruth Wilson.
The story is set in the an "exotic and unusual world: suburban London in the late 70s. Under the spell of the Sex Pistols, every teenager in the country wants to be a punk, including our hopeless hero Enn. Hearing the local punk Queen Boadicea is throwing a party, Enn crashes the fun and discovers every horny boy's dream; gorgeous foreign exchange students. When he meets the enigmatic Zan, it's lust at first sight. But these girls have come a lot further than America.

Cancer can change anyone’s life--including rock stars.
The documentary Man In The Camo Jacket showcases the life story of the iconic Welsh rock front man Mike Peters of The Alarm from his rise to fame, to battling cancer and finally leading a worldwide philanthropy around the world with the top musicians in rock history.
The film is directed by Russ Kendall (The Song That Changed My Life).
The documentary includes a short interview with Fred Armisen, Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, Martha Quinn, Billy Bragg, Slim Jim Phantom of Stray Cats, Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze and Billy Duffy.
Lrm had a phone interview earlier this month with Mike Peters to discuss his accomplishments in life and his ongoing fight against cancer.
Man In The Camo Jacket is currently available on VOD and iTunes.

A straw poll of the average music fan on what the biggest British albums of all time are is likely to consist of: Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd; (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis; probably 21 by Adele; maybe Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits; Queen’s Greatest Hits Vol. 1, perhaps; but most definitely, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles. The latter of these has reached the grand old age of fifty, and so in way of celebration has been remastered and re-released in a sparkly new boxed set, which also includes a plethora of alternative recordings, outtakes and interviews, over four CDs and two DVDs and 100 minutes of extra footage. Imagine the 1995 release of The Beatles era defining anthology series, but focused purely on 1967. The release is also supported by a feature length documentary, directed by long time Beatles fan Alan G. Parker...

There’s been a lot of anticipation for this film by John Cameron Mitchell, who brought us the entertaining Hedwig and the Angry Inch and the sombre and moving Rabbit Hole. Mitchell returns to the punk territory of the former, but unfortunately with less success.
We’re in Croydon in 1977. Punk is at its height and Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her silver jubilee. This choice of 1977 gives the director plenty of Union Jacks and street parties to set against the iconic Sex Pistols song and record cover, which he uses consistently throughout the film. Our hero is Enn (Alex Sharp): he’s being raised by his single mum, his jazz musician dad having abandoned the family ship years earlier. With his two best mates, the chubby and cerebral John (Ethan Lawrence) and the Billy Idol lookalike Vic (Abraham Lewis), the three schoolboys have embraced punk.

A hodgepodge of genres is splattered all over John Cameron Mitchell’s ludicrous (and ludicrously-titled) “How To Talk to Girls at Parties,” making for an incredibly brazen, outlandish, and totally bananas time at the movies. The creative collision of author Neil Gaiman and the director of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” is a match made in bizarro world heaven as ‘Girls’ thrusts a conventional coming-of-age premise into a romance-horror-comedy-sci-fi blender with the top off, twists the knob to max-level, and blasts the angriest Sex Pistols song you’ve ever heard in your life.

Late summer is all about reflection over at The Criterion Collection, as the library is spending August offering up a handful of unsung classics and new look at some longtime favorites.
Michael Curitz’s “The Breaking Point,” a mostly overlooked Hemingway adaptation, starring John Garfield and Patricia Neal, will be available on Blu-ray for the first time, while Sacha Guitry’s “La poison” arrives on home video for the first time ever. Elsewhere, Mike Leigh’s revelatory “Meantime” is getting a 2K restoration, all the better to enjoy the early work of Tim Roth and Gary Oldman. That’s not all for Oldman fans, however, as Alex Cox’s “Sid & Nancy” hits the collection with a brand new 4K digital restoration. Finally, Walter Matthau stars in the charming comedy “Hopscotch,” also available on Blu-ray in a 2K digital restoration.

“Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten’s acerbic question to the audience at the end of the Sex Pistols’ disastrous 1978 U.S. tour may have marked the end of that group, but for Lydon himself, this was only the beginning of his musical journey. What came after Lydon and the Sex Pistols’ reinvention of rock music is the fascinating subject of Tabbert Fiiller’s lively documentary The Public Image is Rotten, a film with one of rock’s most enduringly incisive, brutally honest, and sharply funny characters at its center. This film tells the story of the genesis and unending evolution of Lydon’s post-punk, post-Sex Pistols band Public Image Ltd. (or PiL for short), which, in its fusion of punk, dance, reggae,...

TWhat is the world coming to when Johnny Rotten is the cheeriest, most positive person in the room? That’s the way it seemed on Friday night at the Tribeca Film Festival, when the documentary “The Public Image Is Rotten” had its world premiere, and John Lydon — known for spewing venom and spittle in equal measure during his days in the Sex Pistols — followed the screening with a slightly unhinged Q&A in which most of his answers fairly reeked of positivity and light. He talked about the importance of books, about how the best kind of political statement is to.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Will This April Dump Weekend See Any New Movie Open Over $10 Million?
After the decent opening of last week’s The Fate of the Furious--though not quite as much as I predicted--it’s going to be hard for any new movie to make a mark against its second weekend even if it drops 55% or more this weekend, which is very likely.
Probably the best bet to make money this weekend is the thriller Unforgettable (Warner Bros.), which pits Kathryn Heigl against Rosario Dawson and is the directorial debut by producer Denise Di Novi (Crazy, Stupid, Love). It also stars Geoff Stults as the ex-husband of Heigl’s character Tessa, who becomes engaged to Dawson’s Julia, making her the stepmom to the former’s daughter,...

Nothing changes your entire life as you know it quite like a newborn. Not only does this new life form require a complete top-to-bottom home makeover in the form of tons of plush toys, pastels, mobiles, and safety locks on anything and everything, but it also requires ditching your arsenal of designer duds in favor of t-shirts and sweats you won’t mind getting covered in baby food and spit-up. Projects participated in the Nordic festival’s works in progress event.
Ruben Ostlund got buyers and festival programmers hopping with excitement in Goteborg as he presented the first footage from his forthcoming fifth feature The Square during the festival’s work in progress pitches.
Ostlund screened about seven minutes from one scene of the new film, during which a controversial performance artist (played by Terry Notary) makes guests at a black-tie art gala very uncomfortable. “You know I love awkward situations,” the director said.
Goteborg’s audience of industry experts commented that they were impressed by the confidence of the unnerving scene, which showed Ostlund working on a bigger scale even than his last hit, Force Majeure.
At a festival session later for the public, Ostlund previewed a second clip from the film, in which a museum director (Claes Bang) delivers a self-centered video apology to a boy he had accused of being a thief.

Straight out of the '90s, right into the '70s. The resurrected era of crop tops and chokers has suddenly taken a back seat to a new, Sex Pistols-worthy trend involving fishnets and denim. Let's face it: Winter can be boring. The chilling outside temperatures are less than inviting (forcing you to do things like binge watch new Netflix originals all day). When it comes to your wardrobe, it's all about puffy coats, clunky boots and the color black. Before you know it, your closet is one giant snoozefest. That is...until now. The Kardashian-Jenner clan (and other style stars like Vanessa Hudgens and Hailey Baldwin) are letting you know there's a new way to spice up your...

Punk rock stories don’t get more explosive or infamous than the relationship between the Sex Pistols‘ Sid Vicious and his partner Nancy Spungen. And while the film “Sid and Nancy” gave the tale a cinematic spin, the documentary “Sad Vacation: The Last Days Of Sid And Nancy” takes a deeper longer at what led to the deadly consequences between them.

A mainstay of both Cinema Scope and Reverse Shot (not to mention plenty of other publications), Adam Nayman is one of our sharpest film critics. This is evidenced in his previous book, It Doesn’t Suck, a thorough defense of Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls that only solidified the film maudit as something of a modern classic. He’s now turned his attention to another divisive figure with Ben Wheatley: Confusion and Carnage. While Nayman has shown in much of his writing a skepticism towards the lionization of certain genre directors in Internet circles, he makes a compelling case for the still yet-to-quite-breakthrough Wheatley as a wholly intelligent filmmaker whose ideas transcend Tumblr screencaps. He sat down with us to discuss his new book, Wheatley, and other issues within film culture.

The son of Sex Pistols creator Malcolm McLaren burned his entire memorabilia collection worth $6-$12 million in protest Saturday, saying punk has no solutions for today’s generation and is “conning the young.” McLaren’s son, Joe Corre, piled clothes, rare recordings and other paraphernalia on a river barge on the 40th anniversary of the band’s debut single “Anarchy in the UK” and set it on fire. The multi-million dollar bonfire also included firework-stuffed effigies of Prime Minister Theresa May and her predecessors David Cameron and Tony Blair, dressed in Sex Pistols clothes. At a London press conference on Friday,...

Nearly two weeks after announcing exclusively to People he and Jennifer Meyer were ending their marriage, Tobey Maguire stepped out Friday for a guys’ night with his longtime friend Leonardo DiCaprio at Casamigos’ annual Halloween party in Beverly Hills, California.
Making a low-key arrival around 10 p.m., the star stayed incognito in a blue monkey mask and roamed through the party before meeting up with the Oscar winner after he arrived just before midnight with an entourage.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
In one of the busier weekends of the month, two of the movies did better than I predicted and two did worse. The real winner of the weekend was Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, which did far better than anyone thought with an opening weekend of $28.5 million in just 2,260 theaters or $12,611 per theater. It ended up completely demolishing Tom Cruise’s action sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which opened in almost 1,500 more theaters, but at least that ended up around where I predicted with $22.9 million. Ouija: Origin of Evil came out slightly below my prediction to take third place with $14 million, while the Fox comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses bombed even worse than I expected with $5.5 million in 3,000 theaters.

Daniel Radcliffe chats to us about his quiz show addiction, Imperium, Swiss Army Man, and fake erections...
Pretty much every young actor in Hollywood must be pretty jealous of Daniel Radcliffe’s position. It’s been five years since he finished up being a boy wizard, and he’s now deep into the next stage of his career. Coming off one of the biggest franchises of all time, he’s basically been able to cherry pick whatever strange and interesting roles he wants. His latest two movies show the breadth of projects he’s taking on. Last week saw him go undercover as an FBI agent infiltrating Neo-Nazis in Imperium, and this week the notorious 'Daniel Radcliffe plays a farting corpse' movie Swiss Army Man finally makes its way to UK cinemas, following acclaim at film festivals around the world.

Phil Strongman uses archive interview footage to place McLaren and punk in the tradition of anarchism, situationalism and pop art
There’s something appropriately anarchic about Phil Strongman’s scrappy but nonetheless watchable documentary tribute to Malcolm McLaren, the uncategorisable flaneur, entrepreneur, poseur, artist-manqué and mischief-maker who died in 2010, having invented the Sex Pistols. This film looks a bit patchy, occasionally the audio quality isn’t of the highest and, despite the title, there is hardly anything about Vivienne Westwood. (Strongman uses what appears to be archive interview footage of McLaren.) Yet like Julien Temple and Greil Marcus, Strongman places McLaren and punk in the tradition of anarchism, situationism and pop art, with interesting supporting material and claims that McLaren always wanted to be the “British Andy Warhol”. A shrewd guess, and it could be true. Unfortunately, McLaren didn’t have Warhol’s stamina and his gift for flattering celebrities,...

Riveting and repulsive, with a claustrophobic perspective that mirrors its subjects: all id, all in the moment. But it’s also shallow, all on the surface. Part of a series in which I watch and react to a film considered a classic (or a cult classic) that I’ve never seen before.
In my head, Sid Vicious looks like Gary Oldman. Even though I had never seen 1986’s Sid & Nancy until, literally, yesterday. Having now seen the movie, I feel reasonably confident in saying that I had never even seen a clip from it; there was, at least, no scene that felt familiar. Yet somehow this film has been so much a part of the pop-culture undercurrent that it had that level of impact on me sight unseen.
Having now experienced Sid & Nancy — you don’t just watch it, you get immersed in it whether you want to or not...

Alex Cox’s cult movie deserves its 30th anniversary re-release, not least as a powerful reminder of how punk has since been defanged
Alex Cox’s cult movie about the doomed relationship between Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen is re-released to mark the 40th anniversary of the punk movement, and the 30th anniversary of the film. Here is film-making as abrasive, bratty and antisocial as the characters it follows. And as such, it’s a timely reminder of just how much the dangerous idea of punk has been defanged as it has been appropriated into the mainstream. Fascinating as a time capsule and as a showcase for the early work of the great cinematographer Roger Deakins, this love triangle between Sid, Nancy and the heroin that destroyed them both remains a gruellingly tough watch.

"Who the hell do you think you are?!" Hey punk fans, it's time to revisit this cult classic. Described as "the definitive [film] of the punk phenomenon", the punk rock drama Sid and Nancy is getting a re-release this year for its 30th anniversary. The film stars Gary Oldman as Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, who tried to start a solo career after the band broke up in 1978. The film profiles his turbulent and destructive romance with his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, played by Chloe Webb, a heroin-addicted groupie who was found dead months later. The cast includes David Hayman, Andrew Schofield, Xander Berkeley, and Courtney Love in a small role. It's always cool to see great films return to theaters for a restored re-release. Have fun. Here's the new 30th anniversary re-release trailer for Alex Cox's Sid and Nancy, from The Guardian: Morbid biographical story of Sid Vicious (Gary Oldman...

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Sid & Nancy,” StudioCanal and the Independent Film Office are rereleasing the punk-rock Romeo & Juliet in the UK next month. The Guardian has debuted a new trailer for Alex Cox’s follow-up to “Repo Man,” which you can watch below — or not. Anarchy in the UK, after all.

Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb play the star-crossed lovers of the title, he of the Sex Pistols and she his girlfriend for the last year and a half of her life. Several theories (some more conspiratorial than others) have emerged in the nearly 40 years since, with the semi-official story — that Vicious was responsible — never being confirmed, as he died shortly after. Cox’s film about the two wasn’t a financial success at the time, but has, like “Repo Man,” become a cult classic.
