Laura grew up in Belfast, Ireland, and graduated from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2004.

Her maternal uncle Eugene Simons disappeared on New Years Day 1981 from his home in County Down, Northern Ireland, just near the border at the hands of the Provisional Irish Republican Army at the height of the Northern Ireland conflict known as the "Troubles". Three years later, his body was discovered by a dog-walker in a bog across the border in County Louth. He was 26 years old.
