Benjamin was born in the upper Midwest and attended high school and college in Michigan. He was involved in the visual arts (drawing and painting), reading and tennis. In college his major shifted from English to Philosophy to Art and ended with the latter two. His first film work was with Kurdish filmmaker Sami Mermer on a bio-doc about homelessness and statelessness. They filmed with equipment borrowed from local TV stations on the streets of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has worked in Los Angeles since 2005 supporting himself by working at light construction and other various odd jobs. His first acting coach was Cliff Osmond, of Billy Wilder films. His first theatre role was Boo Ridley in To Kill a Mockingbird in 2011 in Sierra Madre.
