Left alone for the night in their new orchard farmhouse, three teenage sisters soon find themselves at the mercy of some unscrupulous townie boys. The tables are turned however, when the malevolence that roams the orchard starts to hunt down the boys.
“Turning the tables” is the defining trope of exploitation cinema. The early 1970s was a time when exploitation cinema was in its prime. Wes Craven made The Last House on the Left and Sam Peckinpah made Straw Dogs but there were many other “rape and revenge” films at the time. The same debates about subtext can be had today with violent horror films. Was The Last House on the Left really about the Vietnam War?...

Originality is something I always scream out for, especially when it comes to horror movies. I’m not someone that constantly complains about remakes or sequels but I love to see things I have never seen before, twists on ideas that are well known and Hunter’s Moon at least aims to do this.
It all seems very clichéd at first but I’m sure that’s the idea. We see a family – Mother, father, three daughters – moving from the city into a new house in a small town. Once settled the parents go out for the night, leaving their teenage daughter’s home alone, only for three locals to have invited themselves into the property. From there though,...

Lionsgate has released a trailer for a horror thriller titled Hunter's Moon, a direct-to-vod werewolf film from an executive producer of Live Free or Die Hard, 16 Blocks, and Hostage. New on DVD and Blu-ray
"NCIS"
'Tis the season for a ton of TV shows to come out on DVD, including "NCIS: The Twelfth Season," "NCIS: Los Angeles - The Sixth Season," and "NCIS: New Orleans - The First Season" on August 18. It did well in its first season but tanked in the ratings in season two and is sure to be cancelled. Ever wonder what would happen if your loved ones returned from the dead? A&E’s The Returned, from Lost’s Carlton Cuse and True Blood’s Raelle Tucker, attempts to answer that question.
Adapted from the acclaimed French drama Les Revenants, The Returned is an English-language 10-episode retelling centered on the residents of a sleepy town whose lives are forever changed when people who had died years earlier suddenly reappear without warning. For those who may have seen the original series, The Returned isn’t necessarily rewriting the script – and they’re Ok with that.
“I feel like Carlton brought some of what made [Les Revenants] so engaging into the American version and added some things to make it uniquely its own,” star Mark Pellegrino tells ETonline. “There was the sense of mystery that pervades not only the universe but the characters. The show is unapologetic about not answering questions that you have. Even in the...

When Fox's "Gracepoint" premiered this fall, I was at a loss for what to say about a show that was a beat-for-beat, and often shot-for-shot, remake of a series I knew and liked very much in "Broadchurch." The argument Fox and the "Gracepoint" producers made was that their show wasn't made for the hundred thousand-odd viewers who watched "Broadchurch" on BBC America, but for the potentially much larger audience that might be engaged by the story and the fine cast assembled to act it out, and I could see the merit to that(*), even as it was impossible for me to divorce myself from knowledge of the original. (*) Technically, Fox was right: the "Gracepoint" audience was Much larger than the American "Broadchurch" audience, but was still a failure by broadcast network standards. "The Returned," A&E's remake of the the French series "Les Revenants" — which has already aired on Sundance under the title "The Returned,...

Starting in March, A&E has set up a Monday night of Carlton Cuse-produced spins on genre favorites. A&E announced on Friday (January 9) morning that "Bates Motel" will return for its third season on Monday, March 9 at 9 p.m. "Bates Motel" will be followed by the first season of A&E's remake of "The Returned," which A&E hopes will do better than last spring's short-lived "Bates" lead-out "Those That Kill." "Bates Motel" is, of course, a semi-prequel to Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho," while "The Returned" is a very literal English-language take on SundanceTV's acclaimed French zombie-kinda drama "Les Revenants." While both dramas feature "Lost" veteran Carlton Cuse as executive producer, it's worth noting that Raelle Tucker ("True Blood") is running the show on "The Returned," while Kerry Ehrin is steering "Bates Motel." The "Returned" ensemble includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Mark Pellegrino, Jeremy Sisto, India Ennenga, Sophie Lowe,...

Chicago – From the very beginning of her screen career, Olivia Thirlby has specialized in playing youthful seductresses intent on jump-starting their male partners’ sexual coming-of-age. She exuded megawatt allure in everything from David Gordon Green’s “George Washington” to Brett Ratner’s memorable segment in “New York, I Love You.”
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Yet she received her best role to date in Jonathan Levine’s overlooked 2008 romance, “The Wackness,” in which she played a teen who agrees to go steady with a pot-dealing virgin, but ends up being repelled by his post-coital affections. To her, sex is just sex, though the intimacy she freely grants proves to have enormous repercussions on the mind, heart and nether regions of her inexperienced lover. It’s this character who shares the most striking similarities with Martine, Thirlby’s anti-heroine in director Ry Russo-Young’s diverting yet problematic new film.

Treme, Season 3, Episode 5: “I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say”
Written by Eric Overmyer (Story), Lolis Eric Elie and Jen Ralson (Teleplay)
Directed by Alex Hall
Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) on HBO
This week, on Treme: Amy’s family comes to visit, Sofia can’t catch a break, and Terry does a hell of a John Wayne
While this is another solid, entertaining, and inspiring episode of Treme, it has the unfortunate distinction of coming after last week’s installment, which ranks among the series’ best. Its proximity to “The Greatest Love” calls attention to this episode’s, and the show’s, weaknesses, by far the most prominent of which is the number of characters. Many shows find tremendous success with massive, sprawling casts, but what these show do that Treme doesn’t is tie their ensembles together. Each of our main characters has its own set...

Title: Nobody Walks Director: Ry Russo-Young Starring: John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, Rosemarie DeWitt, India Ennenga, Rhys Wakefield, Justin Kirk, Jane Levy, Dylan McDermott An artful, perceptive look at human desire’s ability to arrive in sudden, rolling fashion, like a tidal swell, “Nobody Walks” is a delicate but somewhat mesmeric arthouse bauble from director Ry Russo-Young and co-writer Lena Dunham, who’s shot to popularity with HBO’s “Girls.” The winner of a special jury prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the movie is a fragile but rewarding slice of “Silver Lake cinema,” which is to say a fairly invigorating breath of fresh air for cineastes and something a bit too precious by half [ Read More ]

Ry Russo-Young’s Nobody Walks is by far one of my favourite films of the year, debuting at Sundance at the start of the year, and then coming to Sundance London in the spring, where I instantly fell in love with it.
The brilliant Olivia Thirlby and John Krasinski take the leads, and with the film set for release in Us theatres today, Yahoo Movies have released a new clip, in which Krasinski confronts Thirlby – the cursing has been censored, but naturally you can understand what’s going on here.
“Martine, a 23-year-old artist from New York, arrives in Los Angeles to stay in the pool house of a family living in the hip and hilly community of Silver Lake. Peter, the father, has agreed to help Martine complete sound design on her art film as a favor to his wife. Martine innocently enters the seemingly idyllic life of this...

Martine (Olivia Thirlby) is a 23-year old artist who has traveled from New York to Los Angeles to work on the sound design of her new video art project. She is delivered to the home of her audio engineer -- Peter (John Krasinski) -- by a predatory male who clearly misinterprets Martine's innocent in flight friendliness as an open invitation to screw in the airport parking garage. John resides with his wife (Rosemarie De Witt), Julie, whom we meet during one of her many uncomfortable therapy sessions with a client (Justin Kirk) who unabashedly has a crush on his psychiatrist. From this point onward, it is pretty obvious where Nobody Walks is going. Every male we meet will make a sexual advance towards a questionably flirtatious (or incredibly naive) female. Even Julie's daughter -- Kolt (India Ennenga) -- finds herself in awkward, sexually-charged situations. But, then again, some of the...

This month sees the release of a new clip, released by Magnolia Pictures, for Ry Russo-Young’s latest drama, Nobody Walks, which she co-wrote with the brilliant Lena Dunham, creator of HBO’s sex-fuelled comedy Girls.
Winner of the Special Jury Prize for Excellence in Independent Filmmaking at this year’s Sundance, jointly with James Ponsoldt’s Smashed, Nobody Walks stars John Krasinski and Olivia Thirlby in the leads, as the film follows a 23-year-old artist from New York who arrives in Los Angeles to stay in the pool house of a family, where the father agrees to help her complete sound design on her film as a favour to his wife (Rosemarie DeWitt).

Title: Nobody Walks Magnolia Pictures Director: Ry Russo-Young Screenwriter: Lena Dunham, Ry Russo-Young Cast: Olivia Thirlby, Rosemarie DeWitt, John Krasinski, India Ennenga, Rhys Wakefield Screened at: Review 1, NYC, 9/27/12 Opens: October 19, 2012 As a matter of personal taste I would have to say that Olivia Thirlby is miscast as a sex symbol that acts as a catalyst, throwing a nicely functional family out of orbit. As Martine, she attracts men like the ants in her own movie project to honey, yet with a page-boy haircut, this short, 23-year-old character looks more like a boy than anything resembling a hottie. “Nobody Walks,” which gets the title from the fact [ Read More ]

Starring John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, Rosemarie DeWitt and an excellent supporting cast that features Dylan McDermott, Justin Kirk, and one-to-watch up-and-comers like India Ennenga, Rhys Wakefield and Jane Levy, "Nobody Walks" is one of our favorite indie dramas of the fall. The third feature-length effort from Ry Russo-Young (2009's celebrated indie "You Wont Miss Me"), "Nobody Walks" is also co-written by one of Young's high school pals, one Lena Dunham, the star and creator of HBO's "Girls." An understated drama about a family that takes a young experimental film artist into their home and the havoc it wreaks, there's a lot to love about "Nobody Walks," from the excellent lead performance of Olivia Thirlby (which reminds us just how underused in Hollywood she is), to the moody score by Fall On Your Sword, to the inquisitive screenplay by Dunham and Russo-Young, which is interested in exploring human...

If there’s one thing that seems to be able to provide endless material for indie films to mine, it’s infidelity. There’s no need for special effects, fancy locations, or even big name actors to make a compelling human drama, all you have to do is set yourself up a good, old-fashioned love triangle, get a couple steamy shots of people doing it, and then take things to a place where everyone is crying a lot and yelling at each other. The results are instantly compelling, and instantly relatable to everyone watching. Nobody Walks has a leg up on your typical, indie infidelity movie for a few reasons though. Most apparent is that they actually have sprung for some big name actors. From indie darlings like Olivia Thirlby and Rosemarie Dewitt, to beloved TV stars like John Krasinski and Justin Kirk, to an up-and-comer like India Ennenga (Treme) and an old hand like Dylan McDermott, Nobody Walks...

BAMcinemaFest is now in full swing and Brooklyn cinephiles are getting a chance to sample some of the films they might have missed at Sundance, Cannes and SXSW. Though the festival is already halfway over, there are still plenty of interesting films coming up, including So Yong Kim’s “For Ellen,” Josh Radnor’s “Liberal Arts” and Craig Zobel’s “Compliance” among others. Check out the full line-up here. One of the highlights of the fest so far has been Ry Russo-Young’s “Nobody Walks.” The dramedy centers on young artist Martine (Olivia Thirlby) who comes to stay in the pool house of a Los Angeles family while she completes her short film. The family includes sound designer Peter (John Krasinski), his wife Julie (Rosemarie DeWitt), a therapist, and teenage daughter Kolt (India Ennenga) who are all affected in one way or another by their new houseguest.

And while the latter hasn’t generated quite as much buzz as some of the other entries just yet, we called it “a sensual, emotionally complex film” and “one of the best at [Sundance].” The third feature from writer/director Ry Russo-Young centers on a young New York artist who comes to stay with a Los Angeles family while she completes her short film and ends up affecting the lives of each family member. The Sundance Institute and The O2 announced today the programme of 14 narrative and documentary feature films that will make their UK premieres at the inaugural Sundance London festival, taking place at The O2 from 26-29 April. These films premiered in January at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah – the premier independent film festival in the United States.
“I welcome the opportunity to see how people in the UK experience these films,” said Robert Redford, President and Founder of Sundance Institute. “While they are American productions they speak to universal experiences and global challenges.”
He went on to add, “Sundance London also is the perfect opportunity to continue our long-time commitment to growing a broader international community around new voices and new perspectives.”

2012 will be the first year that Sundance comes to London and we here at HeyUGuys are very excited about it. It takes place 26th – 29th April and we’re hoping to be there to cover as much of the event as is possible.
Incase you’re not familiar with Sundance, it is a spin-off from the big Us event which takes place in Park City, Utah at the beginning of the year. In a nutshell, Sundance is a four-day festival that will include film screenings, live music performances, discussions, panels and other public cultural programming will be held 26 – 29 April, 2012 at The O2 in London. Robert Redford is due to open the festival with a discussion connecting film and music. ‘An Evening with Robert Redford and T Bone Burnett’ will be moderated by author and screenwriter Nick Hornby.

As most of us anticipated, Magnolia ended up being one of the big players at this year’s Sundance, snatching up films — with stars big, small, and somewhere in-between — left and right. Don’t believe me? Well, the past 24 hours alone have seen them make three acquisitions that could all be in discussion by the end of this year. If you catch my drift.
First, up THR tells us that they’ve purchased Compliance, Craig Zobel‘s (reportedly excellent) real-life drama that chronicles the way in which a man (Pat Healy), pretending to be a police officer, was able to send the life of a young girl, Sandra (Ann Dowd), straight to hell. (THR goes into some further plot details that, to an unknowing viewer like myself, come across as spoilers.) And, lucky for Compliance, it ended up being this year’s obligatory “Sundance movie that pisses off certain members of the audience,...

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival has come to an end, and the winners of the Jury, Audience, and Next <=> awards have been announced. There was a great selection of films this year at the festival, and I've seen more good than bad. I'm ultimately happy with the outcome. Beasts of the Southern Wild was this year's most buzzed about film and took home the top Grand Jury Prize. I didn't like it as much as everyone else, but it was still good, and it won. I think it was just way too over hyped for what I ended up seeing. Maybe I would have liked it more had I gone in with no expectations.
Here's the full breakdown of winners:
