Tammy and the Television: Johnson Jam Packs Eccentric Indie Drama
Death becomes Felicity Huffman in the sophomore feature Tammy’s Always Dying from actress-turned director Amy Jo Johnson. A fractured character portrait of a daughter caring for her alcoholic mother, there’s an almost shocking number of eccentric tics crammed, both narrative and otherwise, packed into Johnson’s eighty-five-minute running time which somehow manages to seem less over-the-top than its synopsis.
At times touching, if thanks to a highly empathetic turn from lead Anastasia Phillips (as well as a somewhat contained Huffman playing a character which could have been egregiously over-the-top), it’s an interesting if not always entirely successful navigation of trauma and its exploitation which suggests Johnson is an interesting storyteller and another confirmation of Huffman’s abilities despite the highly publicized exploits of recent legal issues which, for the foreseeable future, will be baggage clouding the reception of her work.

Felicity Huffman has been in the news a lot over the last year or so, and not for her acting. There’s no need to get into the scandal she was involved in, since it has no bearing on her work here. However, it never hurts to have a showy performance to refocus audiences on your skills. At times, the drama Tammy’s Always Dying showcases Huffman at her best. At other times, sadly, it’s unfocused and doesn’t make proper use of her talents. It’s an uneven movie that sees the unevenness trickle down to all involved. Some elements work, some don’t. It ultimately creates a mixed bag that’s just shy of recommendation worthy. The film looks at the dramatic relationship between a troubled mother and daughter. For Catherine MacDonald (Anastasia Phillips) and her hard drinking/self destructive mother Tammy MacDonald (Huffman), the same routine...

Tammy, the forlorn protagonist of “Tammy’s Always Dying,” can never quite make it a whole month, her government assistance running dry just one or two days before the next check comes in, and she has a tendency to overspend on booze. But she’s figured out a way to make do: On the twenty-ninth day of each month, Tammy toddles off to a high bridge in her small Canadian town and readies to heave herself off of it, only to be rescued by her somewhat more stable adult daughter Catherine. The routine is already an old one by the time Amy Jo Johnson’s intriguing but often half-baked feature directorial debut opens, complete with staggering Tammy (Felicity Huffman) and resigned Catherine (Anastasia Phillips) going about their worn-in roles.
But what if something changed? More to the point: What if Tammy, who makes a mockery of suicidal ideation, was actually dying?...

"Taking care of me is the only thing you've ever been good at." Quiver Distribution has released an official trailer for an indie dark comedy meets cancer drama titled Tammy's Always Dying, the latest film from filmmaker Amy Jo Johnson (The Space Between). This originally premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and is heading straight to VOD in early May for anyone interested. Based on a script by Joanne Sarazen, Felicity Huffman plays Tammy, a charismatic, yet endlessly self-destructive mother to 35-year-old Catherine, whose role as a caregiver changes when Tammy is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Catherine eventually recruits a talk show agent to help profit from her mother's miserable life story. But, as Tammy's death becomes her daughter's only way out, one problem stands in the way: Tammy just won't die. The cast includes Anastasia Phillips, Lauren Holly, Clark Johnson, Aaron Ashmore, Jessica Greco, and Kristian Bruun.

You have to give credit to any story that allows its despicable characters to be despicable without also demanding forgiveness from their victim. This is especially true in tales concerning a parent and child considering society seems to crave this ideal that the former is due some benefit of the doubt they’ve never earned. Screenwriter Joanne Sarazen refuses to go that route. She won’t pander to audiences by making Tammy MacDonald (Felicity Huffman) anything but the narcissistic, alcoholic screw-up devoid of self-control she is. It doesn’t matter that she’s flawed, unwell, or more often than not contrite in the fallout—sympathy must fly out the window at some point. And to the character’s credit, she knows this to be true. Self-pity doesn’t rule Tammy. Self-loathing does.

“Tammy’s Always Dying” belongs to that peculiarly Canadian school of depressing sad-sack comedies about dysfunctional relationships between generally annoying people whom we’re nonetheless meant to somehow feel warm and fuzzy about. These films frequently debut at Tiff, then are little heard from again beyond the realms of the CBC and Air Canada movie playlists.
Neither better or worse than most of a generally meh subgenre, Amy Jo Johnson’s feature may attract a tad more attention due to top-billed Felicity Huffman, who didn’t do much to capitalize on her “Transamerica” Oscar nom 14 years ago and now sees her first notable big-screen lead in some time coincide with the high-profile college bribery scandal also involving fellow thesp Lori Loughlin. Whether that current notoriety will help or hinder “Tammy’s” prospects, .

French director Pascal Laugier’s first English-language feature, “The Tall Man,” wasn’t seen by many, perhaps because that convoluted mystery-thriller with Jessica Biel wasn’t really the straight horror film it appeared to be. Maybe that explains why Laugier’s first film in six years returns to the terrain of his more successful 2008 breakout, “Martyrs.” While not as graphically icky as that film, his new “Incident in a Ghostland” adds up to much the same thing: It’s thoughtfully, even elegantly crafted, light on plot, character development, and explication, but very heavy on the torture inflicted on terrified young women. For some horror fans, such “extreme” content in a relatively upscale package made “Martyrs” special, and they may enjoy a similar frisson here. The rest of us will again feel a tad queasy about the way Laugnier meticulously showcases sadism while seeming comparatively indifferent to matters of basic storytelling logic and suspense.

"I never should've stayed in that house." Vertical Entertainment has debuted a new official Us trailer for the supernatural horror thriller Incident in a Ghostland, the latest from French director Pascal Laugier. We posted an international trailer for this earlier in the year. The story is about a house where a woman had to fend off intruders to save her daughters. Years later, the two of them grow up with completely different personalities, still traumatized by the events. When they all reunite at the house once again, strange events began to occur. The horror film stars Crystal Reed, Taylor Hickson, Rob Archer, Emilia Jones, Adam Hurtig, Anastasia Phillips, Mylène Farmer, and Alicia Johnston. Unfortunately this still looks as mediocre as it did in the first trailer, only for the most diehard horror fans. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Pascal Laugier's Incident in a Ghostland, from YouTube: You...

Pascal Laugier is a director with a reputation… After all, when you make a film like Martyrs, you’re bound to get pigeon-holed into the “extreme cinema” category. However Laugier’s first film post-Martyrs, The Tall Man, wasn’t met with as much… praise… Which is probably why the French director has taken 6 years to follow that film up with another spooky tale: Ghostland (aka Incident in a Ghostland), which stars Crystal Reed, Anastasia Phillips, Mylene Farmer, Emilia Jones, and Taylor Hickson.
Following the death of her aunt, Pauline and her two daughters inherit a house. But the first night, murderers enter the house and Pauline must fight to save her daughters. A drama that will traumatize the whole family but especially affect differently each of the girls whose personalities will diverge further after this nightmarish night. While Beth becomes a renowned author specializing in horror literature, Vera gets bogged down in destructive paranoia.

"Are you going to let me die alone?" The official French trailer has debuted for the latest horror film from French director Pascal Laugier (Martyrs), titled Ghostland or also Incident in a Ghost Land. The story is about a house where a woman had to fend off intruders to save her daughters. Years later, the two of them grow up with completely different personalities, still traumatized by the events. When they all reunite at the house once again, strange events began to occur. I like the tagline on the second poster: "you really thought you've been scared before?" Oh damn. The horror film stars Crystal Reed, Taylor Hickson, Rob Archer, Emilia Jones, Adam Hurtig, Anastasia Phillips, Mylène Farmer, and Alicia Johnston. The film opens first in France, then should hit Us theaters sometime in the spring. Take a peek if you dare. Here's the first international trailer for Pascal Laugier's Ghostland,...

On first blush Ali Weinstein’s documentary Mermaids focuses its glimpse at the titular sea myth’s power towards the whimsical and fun. She takes us from the days of old at Florida’s Weeki Wachee Springs State Park (which is still in operation) to a contemporary trend of mer-lovers creating or commissioning their own tails for public expositions or some much needed private rest and relaxation. Vicki Smith relays fond memories from when she was a teenager performing underwater with an air hose for packed auditoriums. Rachel Smith (no relation) takes us through the backstage preparations before swimming within a Sacramento mermaid bar. Julz Owen shows how she manufactures her own fins. And Cookie de Jesus basks in the excitement of discovering she’s no longer the only “mermaid” in Harlem.
Everything we see is brimming with joyous wonder both on the faces of those wearing the tails and...

The final episodes of Bomb Girls season two left us with so many questions. Will Betty be convicted of murder? Will Kate acknowledge her feelings for her friend? Has Gladys really joined a spy organization? Thankfully, we now know when we'll finally get the answers to all these questions: Reelz will premiere the two-hour original movie Bomb Girls: Facing the Enemy on Monday, May 26th at 9p Et/ 6p Pt.
The movie is set during the Battle for the Atlantic and will find the employees of Victory Munitions tasked with working on a sonar system to detect German U-boats. When it becomes clear that a saboteur is among the ranks of the VicMu staff, Gladys is tasked with finding the culprit. This means she will be forced to spy on her best friends, her coworkers, and even other intelligence agents. Though the movie can stand alone, there will definitely...

As expected, ABC has cancelled Lucky 7 after two low-rated episodes. The drama is the first of the 2013-14 season to fall.
Lucky 7 revolves around a group of service employees who form a workplace family and win the lottery together. The cast includes Summer Bishil, Lorraine Bruce, Alexandra Castillo, Christine Evangelista, Stephen Louis Grush, Matt Long, Anastasia Phillips, Luis Antonio Ramos, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.
The series debuted to a disappointing 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.43 million viewers. It was last in its timeslot. This week, the second episode plunged 46% to a 0.7 rating with 2.62 million. It quickly became the network's lowest-rated show.

ABC has tried ensemble dramas like Six Degrees, The Nine, and My Generation -- and they were all ratings disappointments and quickly cancelled. Will Lucky 7 be different and make it to a second season? We shall see.
Lucky 7 follows a group of service station employees who win the lottery. They think that the money will solve all of their problems but, of course, things become much more complicated. The show features the talents of Summer Bishil, Lorraine Bruce, Alexandra Castillo, Christine Evangelista, Stephen Louis Grush, Matt Long, Anastasia Phillips, Luis Antonio Ramos, and Isiah Whitlock, Jr.

The out-of-nowhere success of "Lost" in 2004-05 spawned a bunch of shows that attempted to replicate its formula in one way or another. There were the obvious, sci fi-tinged shows like ABC's "Invasion," CBS' "Threshold" and NBC's "Heroes" that looked to capitalize on a perceived appetite for "Lost's" more fantastical elements.
Some others, though, ditched the supernatural and went for the human side of "Lost": following characters who were bound together by a life-changing event. Shows like "The Nine," "Reunion" and to a lesser extent "Six Degrees" (which eschewed the "life-changing event" part to explore other, more esoteric connections). What they all had in common was that, with the exception of "Heroes" for its first couple of seasons, none of them really clicked with viewers.

Lucky 7 is yet another translation of British television for American audiences, and it’s about par for the course. While some efforts (mostly long ago and far away, with the exception of The Office) have come together to create long-lived, and beloved series, this isn’t an avenue of series creation that has a solid, recent track record.
Based on the British show, The Syndicate, it’s the story of a group of coworkers at a gas station who have been playing the same numbers for years, and fear for the jobs as rumors abound that the station is closing. All with their own monetary woes, which are laid out for us in great detail, this rag tag assortment of characters is about to find out that there are a lot of problems that come with their sudden riches.
The main trouble this show is going to have is in the translation of format.

Chicago – “Lucky 7,” debuting tonight on ABC to end their practically unprecedented attempt at an entire night of new programming, is a case of concept over actual character. The creators of this inert drama think cluttering their storytelling with various subplots will make up for the fact that you just don’t care about any of them. It’s a case of quantity over quality and that never works. I could be wrong but this one’s high on my list of shows that could be cancelled before Christmas.

The premise of “Lucky 7” is one that I bet has been floating around pilot pitch meetings for years. What would you do if you and your co-workers actually won that lotto pool that you plug a buck or two into every week? How would it change your life? Your friendships? Your relationships? Beverly Hills, Calif. — Luis Antonio Ramos, starring in the new ABC series "Lucky 7," became emotional talking about the chance to play something other than a stereotypical Latino character.
"I was tired of playing bad guys and stabbing people in the neck," Ramos said Sunday.
Such work was "sucking away my soul," forcing him to leave Los Angeles and seek more satisfying parts, including on stage, he told a Television Critics Association session.
In "Lucky 7," Ramos' character works at a gas station in Queens, N.Y., and is a devoted family man. The series follows the impact that a shared lottery win has on the station's employees.
"That's the lottery for me," Ramos said of his character, choking up as he discussed the issue.

At ABC‘s upfront, there were a few things that the network wanted to make sure you knew. 1) They are really impressed with the idea that people are going to watch Rebel Wilson do just about anything, and 2) There isn’t anything they’re happier about than bringing you more episodes of television created by Shonda Rhimes.
On these notes, the network would love for you to know that more Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal are coming your way. These, ABC would like to impress upon you (as advertisers) are really good shows. Maybe Olivia Pope needs to do some damage control for ABC, which brought back only two of the 10 shows it premiered last season. At the network’s upfront presentation on Tuesday, Kerry Washington appeared in a pre-taped clip as her character from Scandal, and offered advice to Anne Sweeney, the president of Disney/ABC Television Group, alongside Jimmy Kimmel. Discussing the problem of Dancing With the Stars, which took a ratings dip this season, Kimmel quipped, “For one thing, they’re not really stars.” There aren’t a ton of stars in ABC’s new lineup, either — but there are...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the third announced earlier today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on ABC.
The network is changing up some of its serialized dramas - removing random repeats in favor of two "uninterrupted runs" of twelve episodes each (one in the fall, one in the spring) for shows like "Once Upon A Time," "Grey’s Anatomy," "Scandal" and "Revenge". The large gaps between the two half-seasons will be bridged by "limited series" designed around only 12-13 episode seasons.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen including the high-profile "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" rip-off "Gothica", McG's rip-off of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" entitled "Westside", the series based on Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain ride, the Annie Potts-led "Murder in Manhattan" about...
