Taking over the role is “an honor, because this is a festival that over the years has become a benchmark for cinephiles worldwide,” Hinstin said, adding: “I will be putting all my experience and passion into taking forward this project of freedom and discovery.” Her first festival as artistic director will be next year’s 72nd edition, which runs Aug. 7-17 in the southern Swiss town.

Famous friends lend weight to FilmItalia plea
ROME -- FilmItalia took its case to the public Monday, publishing an open letter decrying plans to fold the organization into Cinecitta Holding.
Signatures from more than 40 leading figures from the Italian film industry appear at the end of the open letter, which was published in several leading Italian media outlets and calls plans for the merger "a grave risk for our cinema industry."
Though both FilmItalia, the nation's international film promotion board, and Cinecitta Holding, the holding company that controls the storied Cinecitta Studios in Rome, are partially funded by the state, they are currently autonomous bodies. FilmItalia's main opposition to the move -- aimed at cutting costs and streamlining the government's support of the film industry -- is that making FilmItalia part of a large bureaucracy would make it less nimble.
Former Locarno Film Festival director Irene Bignardi heads FilmItalia, which spearheads efforts to promote the Italian film industry beyond the country's borders.

FilmItalia, UniFrance team for young talent
ROME -- Italian cinema promotion body FilmItalia and French counterpart UniFrance on Tuesday launched a program aimed at the cross-development and -promotion of young acting talent in both countries.
The launch took place at Rome's historic French embassy in Italy, Palazzo Farnese, with eight young actors from each country on hand for the event.
"Many of these young actors are going to leave their mark on the business in the future, and it can only be a good thing for them to get to know each other and learn from each other now," FilmItalia president Irene Bignardi said in an interview.
The event was held on the sidelines of the 10-day RomaCinemaFest, which concludes Saturday.
This is the third year UniFrance has co-sponsored such an initiative, after last year's joint venture with England announced at the London Film Festival, and the 2005 initiative with Germany unveiled at the Munich Film Festival.
Bignardi said that Italy is mulling its own version of the program and will consider establishing its own joint venture with another European country next year.

Italy's Rutelli wants more gov't film support
VENICE, Italy -- Italy's Culture Minister Francesco Rutelli told leading figures from the Italian film industry Friday that the government would do more to promote the local industry in Italy, and he floated the idea of creating a special government agency to back the industry. It was the first time Rutelli met with the leading officials from the industry as a group since taking office May 16. Among those at the Venice festival meeting were Alessandro Battisti, the president of Cinecitta Studios' parent company Cinecitta Holding; Irene Bignardi, the head of film promotion body FilmItalia; Luciano Sovena, the director of Instituto Luce, Cinecitta's archive and documentary body; and Paolo Ferrari, the president of Warner Bros. Italia and the newly elected president of the Italian Association of Cinematographic Audiovisual and Multimedia Industries. Rutelli's plans for promoting Italian film were painted in broad strokes, but the minister did say the steps would be taken quickly and would involve financial incentives for both the production and promotion of films. He said the moves would benefit both independent producers and others associated with state-controlled Cinecitta, but would stop short of exercising control over projects.
