Grand Hotel fans were outraged earlier this week when ABC announced that it was canceling the summer soap after a single season, largely because it meant they may never get an answer to the show’s big cliffhanger: Who shot Santiago Mendoza?
“We left it with a number of possible suspects,” executive producer Brian Tanen tells TVLine. “It felt like half of the cast was angry with him — Gigi, Mrs. P, the stepdaughters, Felix and Mateo. We were really hopeful that we could do a Season 2 and play out that question. I’ve toyed a lot with various ideas about who it could have been,...

“Always sad to say goodbye.” So wrote Grand Hotel series regular Lincoln Younes to begin a series of tweets he posted after news hit today that the freshman ABC drama series was canceled.
The Australian actor played Danny Garibaldi, a handsome, charming young man who recently started working as a waiter at the family-owned Riviera Grand Hotel in Miami Beach. He strikes up a romantic interest with Alicia Mendoza (Denyse Tontz), daughter of the hotel’s owner (Demián Bichir).
Grand Hotel star Rosalyn Sanchez retweeted a post by a fan of the show who lamented the cancellation, hailing the acting and directing on the ABC drama. “Finally a positive image ~ successful Latin family & business,” the tweet said.
Here’s what Younes posted with the tweets below:

Grand Hotel is checking out of ABC's schedule for good.
The soapy drama has been canceled after one season.
Based on the Spanish TV series Gran Hotel, the series took viewers into the lavish world of the Riviera Grand Hotel, a family-owned establishment in Miami Beach.
It followed Santiago Mendoza, his glamorous second wife, Gigi, and their adult children, as well as the Riviera's staff for a season of mysteries, backstabbing, and everything in between.
The cast included Demián Bichir, Roselyn Sanchez, Denyse Tontz, Bryan Craig, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Lincoln Younes, Shalim Ortiz, Anne Winters, Chris Warren, Feliz Ramirez, and Justina Adorno.
The series launched in June to tepid reviews and okay ratings, but it struggled to keep a decent chunk of the lead-in from The Bachelorette.
When you have one of the biggest shows of the season as your lead-in, you're expected to perform well.

ABC has pulled the plug on “Grand Hotel” after a single season, Variety has confirmed.
Based on the original Spanish series and starring Demian Bichir, Eva Longoria and Roselyn Sanchez, “Grand Hotel” provided an upstairs/downstairs look at the scandals and secrets of both the Mendoza family and the staff that works for them.
The show was written Brian Tanen, who executive produced alongside Longoria and Ben Spector through UnbeliEVAble, as well as Ramon Campos and Teresa Fernandez-Valdes for ABC Studios.
It averaged a modest 0.50 rating in the key 18-49 demographic and around 2.7 million total viewers across its single season. Lincoln Younes (centre) in ‘Grand Hotel.’
Lincoln Younes auditioned for multiple Us roles during six pilot seasons without success – but his persistence paid off when he was invited to join the ensemble cast of Grand Hotel.
Younes plays enigmatic hotel waiter Danny Garibaldi in the Us ABC network series set in Miami, which follows an Hispanic family as they pursue the American dream.
Inspired by a Spanish series and executive produced by Eva Longoria, the show premieres on the Nine Network at 8.40 pm this Wednesday, following The Block.
Ironically the actor, now 27, nearly pulled out of the audition in Sydney. In the space of three days during pilot season he did 12 self-tapes with the Australian casting directors and had so little time to prepare that he nearly cancelled the Grand Hotel audition, but he decided to give it a shot.

There’s hardly a better setting for a summer drama than a swanky Miami hotel overflowing with champagne and secrets. Enter ABC’s “Grand Hotel,” based on a Spanish series and developed by Brian Tanen. It wastes no time diving straight into a tangled mess of melodrama, ranging from missing people to secret pregnancies to a bratty pop star who demands overnighted pastries from his mom. Directed with efficient humor, in part by executive producer Eva Longoria Baston, “Grand Hotel” packs as much punch in as it possibly can.
Heading up the action and the hotel alike are Santiago (Demián Bechir) and Gigi (Roselyn Sanchez), who got together after Santiago’s wife (and Gigi’s best friend) died suddenly of a heart attack. Santiago is in over his head after taking out one too many shady loans to save the hotel, leading to him making a whole lot of stupid...

Leaving behind palatial Spain of the early 1900s for modern-day Miami, Executive Producer Brian Tanen’s American adaptation of the internationally popular Spanish series “Gran Hotel” retains key plot elements while transforming the concept into a glamorous Latinx-fronted project.
In essence, this reinterpretation, also executive produced by Eva Longoria (who plays a small part) is still a murder mystery set inside a family-owned hotel where a determined young man searches for clues to unearth what happened to his missing sister; however, in this version, certain historically-tied conflicts were replaced with more currently relevant scenarios in the context of the United States.
A significant source of drama in the original show was the matriarch’s insistence in her daughter Alicia marrying a wealthy gentleman in hopes of saving the financially strapped property. This 2019 Alicia (played by Salvadoran-American actress Denyse Tontz) isn’t facing arranged marriage, but is nevertheless tasked with helping...

Day 1 of the Atx Television Festival includes a screening of the pilot episode of ABC’s upcoming new series, Grand Hotel. Following the preview, executive producers Brian Tanen and Ben Spector were joined by some of the cast — Roselyn Sanchez, Lincoln Younes and Arielle Kebbel– to speak on what to expect in season one of a series filled with secrets and scandal.
The show is a remake of the original period series from Spain but flips the typical upstairs/downstairs narrative “in that this is about a Hispanic family achieving the American dream. But it’s not a Hispanic show, said Spector. “It’s a show where the Hispanic family owns the hotel. Everything that the family has built is based on this beautiful place.”
Setting the series in Miami “felt authentic to the place that this would be the family,” added Tanen. “Mostly it’s not a thing, it...

Grand Hotel looks set to be one of the soapiest dramas on all of TV, and we're quite okay with that.
If the mark of a good show is when it embraces its genre, then we're sure you're going to find something to like about Grand Hotel.
The official logline reads:
Soapy drama set against the backdrop of a Miami Beach hotel revolves around the family who owns the business, the staff who run it and the explosive secrets they hide under the perfect exterior.
The secrets are well on display in the first trailer, I can't get away from the striking similarities to The CW's Dynasty. There's a new wife with the powerful father, and the daughter hates her and wants to derail the whole relationship.
Having the series set in a hotel means it will be rich with fresh and exciting storylines to keep viewers entertained week in,...

Lauren Cohan may have to leave The Walking Dead behind after all.
ABC has handed out a series order to Whiskey Cavalier, a brand new spy thriller that will pair Cohan with Scandal star Scott Foley.
It follows a CIA agent who struggles in the aftermath of a shocking break-up. His luck changes when he is partnered with a new CIA operative.
As previously reported, Cohan is slated to appear in multiple episodes of The Walking Dead Season 9, but there's a good chance her character will be written out if Whiskey emerges as a success for the network.
With Cohan and Foley leading the cast, it's hard to imagine it not being at least a moderate hit. They are both great actors who will be sure to light up the screen.
